I got Marten's ID and explored the HLL and now all the townspeople are pissed at me and refuse to talk to me (except for Lord Bwhatshisname). I think the problem is Marten's ID because when I talked to Lord B he said something like "whoahoho, marten's ID that'll really help your popularity". I can't buy anything, I can't get the quests from the armorer, I can't talk to the barmaid to finish the Vi quest, I can't recruit the rogue. this sucks. anyone else have this problem? is there a way around it?
|
What order did you do things in? Did you do anything to piss of the townspeople?
I do not have any problem with the people of Arnika and I have the ID tag. I picked up Myles early and did the Vi quest right away. After that I completed Myles' other quests which is where I found the ID badge. Sorry I cannot be of more help. BTW - Have you tried placing the ID tag in a chest? |
I got that same response from Brannik, but I'm not having any problems with the townfolk.
Are you sure you didn't accidently do something else? Like kill one of the guards or something? Or maybe open the main bank vault from under the Jail tunnel? I've heard that is not appreciated at all. judee |
I walked into town, talked to the Rogue. he gave me the rescue quest, but when I tried to recruit him he refused. so I proceeded to search the town. I cleared out the spaceport. I talked to the woman who sells arrows and the like (not the bar woman). I went to the Mook house and lost my mook for a night. then I rescued Vi. I took her to talk to the Lord and that seemed to go as expected. then I went to the prison, found Marten's badge and went into the HLL fort. somewhere around here I went to talk to the Lord and he commented about the badge. from then on out the townspeople refused to talk to me. I don't anything I might've done to piss them off. I hadn't even robbed the bank yet. well, I did take the stuff out of their chests, but I talked to the one lady after that and she was still cool. what would piss them off? what could make them happy again?
I tried putting the ID into a chest, but the game won't let me drop it. it says 'on second thought, you might need that'. |
I didn't find the tunnel under the jail until well after they got pissed. and I didn't go into the bank at all until after it happened. also, the bank girl still talks to me.
|
I don't know the answer, but the key point here is that Myles refused to join you after giving you the quest. The point of the quest is for him to join you and rescue Vi together. Therefore, any of your later actions in Arnika were not the cause of the problem.

He has always joined me without a problem. How could you have pissed him off when you haven't even been in town? What is your highest communication skill? The Lord B* will sell you a Book of Charm which might help. |
I don't think this happens if you keep martean's key card in your party inventory. (Don't keep it on any one character.) Well it wasn't as bad for me, (Everyone still talks to me, I have yet to get any quests.)
|
well, the other lady wasn't pissed at me when I first entered the town, so I must've done something to piss her off. I've been going over everything I done, and I might've figured it out. when I explored the HLL building there were a group of guards patrolling the halls. they went down the right hall (towards the commander) so I went left (thinking I was being sneaky) and got the stuff out of the lockers. as I was leaving the locker room the guards came around the corner and I thought I was going to get surprised so I hit the combat button and proceeded to kill them. it now occurs to me that they might not have been hostile. was I not supposed to kill them?
in any event, the town hates me, is there anything I can do to make them talk to me again? thanks all |
Tramain, upstairs in the HLL, says "People in town won't take kindly if you keep wearing that there Badge (pause) Marten! heh..heh..heh..."
yes, there is a way around it. Take the dang thing out of inventory and put it in a chest. if you get that message about needing it, you must not have talked to Tramain. after talking to him, i stored it very easily in a chest in Antone's Armory. that badge is the root of your people problems. it will only get worse if you continue to carry it. and there's no way you are gonna make friends in any town by going around and killing their guards. you shoulda reloaded when you realized your mistake. i don't think that stashing the card will change anything that has happened to date, but it will prevent any further upsets. |
I swear I've tried putting it in the party inventory and it didn't help, but I'll try it again when I get home.
thanks |

You were not. Once you get into the HLL building, you can loot those lockers to your heart's content, and nobody will do anything. it's sort-of like a Bee colony. It's hard to get in, but once you are inside, everyone just assumes you belong there, and you can do whatever you please as long as you don't attack anyone. |
not the party inventory.
a chest in a room, off your person. make sure you have talked to Tramain, too. |
Maybe they are mad because you killed their guards.
No, the guards are not hostile. You can take everything in the locker. Lol, you killed off the police! Maybe if you go to the tower and kill the mechanical guard, floating eye thing it will get better? Have you done that yet? judee |
If you killed Elvis (HLL Guards) in the HLL building, you are screwed. Take a look at your faction rating in your journal with the Higardi. I bet they are none to happy with you. You also probably got a message when you killed one of the HLL guys stating your faction rating with XXX has dropped. The only solution I see is for you to load a save game prior to this nasty incident.
As for Marten's Badge, I have had zero problem carrying it my party inventory. Everyone in town still talks to me and I only got the one weird look when I talked to Tramain. Hope this helps. |
It had to be kiling the guards.
I still have the badge in my party's inventory and I get no hassles. |
I don't know how you guys did that, but even after I used it, I tried getting rid of Marten's ID and I got a message of "On second thought, you decide you may need that" and it wouldn't let me drop it.
I quit doing it after that and just hauled it around in my party's inventory for the rest of the game. Never had a problem with the Higardi. -Sazerac |
Saz,
You can click on it in your inventory screen, click on the arrow to exit the inventory screen and put it in a chest. :D You can do this with all the stuff the game will not allow you to just drop as far as I know. |
Except apparently Vi's accursed Mace... I can get rid of it if I persist, and uickly give it to another member and then eventually drop it or whatever... But then, aside from having to listen to Vi go through her "dont touch that" bit over and over... and over again to ad nauseum, I wonder if maybe there's some special reason why she wants it so bad, that instead of keeping it just to annoy the player and take up a precious item slot, there might actually be some use for it later on... How, if I might ask, did you handle this?
|
I think it has to be the guards as well. No one has ever said anything about the ID to me other than the guy that says that it won't make you popular. I think that is just 'fluff'. However killing guards... nothing fluff about that.

Werdna, are bee colonies really like that or is that a myth? Like if i shrunk or something and walked into a bee colony, none of the bee's would notice me?
I find that hard to believe. Wish i could test it out somewhere.... |

Wish i could test it out somewhere....<hr></blockquote> Okay, this is WAYYY off topic, but I gotta answer it. Yep, Bee colonies are really like that. Some ant colonies as well. There's a couple of insects (I can't remember what they are off the top of my head) that co-exsist with bees by taking advantage of this fact. They live inside the colony and eat their food, and the colony is none the wiser. I suppose the hard part is getting into the colony in the first place! If I can find my reference, I'll letcha know. |
Weird stuff, i kept Marten's ID tag in the personel inventory of my lord all the time, and i never had any problems with the townspeople getting pissed at me. There must have been some other things you have done........and besides i play an fully unpatched version...and i did not run into any game bugs so far (at the sea caves atm)

Ok ppl, I think the conclusion we have all come to is that the cause of all the troubles in Arnika is due to the fact that the player's (referring to the person who started this thread) faction rating with the Higardi has changed from 'friendly' to 'hostile'. Marten's tag has nothing to do with the trouble in the town whatsoever. The exact same thing happened to me as the guy who started this post. I still don't know what went wrong that made the Higardi targets when I went into combat mode. I swear it was not intentional (btw, missed slingshots that hit the Higardi instead of my intended target wouldn't contribute to this would it?), but by the time I went in the HLL building, I had to fight my way through it to get to the lockers. Now, my question - and I guess this can be applied to the game in general - is, how do you improve relations with a certain faction? In this case, I want to become friendly with the Higardi again. Also, we might need to improve relations with the Mook in order to gain access to their building in Arnika as well as that item that they're holding.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. |
I hostiled one of the Arnika guards acciently and killed him and had the same problem. After that I tried for a couple hours to get a more friendly rating, but could not find a quick way, so I reloaded a previous save game. Maybe some of the late game missions like the tower may help, but I would not recommed wating until late game, Arnika is a good place for items, esp. the custom ones.

Acting without thinking has greater consequences. I don't know if you can win back the town, but I'd certainly hope not. You killed a group of their protectors in cold, cold blood when getting caught robbing them... If I'd have written the game, your party would be in the electric chair... :) |
To DraconisRex: thank you for that most useful reply.... Anyways....the specific case to which you replied did not apply to me (and I'm sure others as well). The guards inside the HLL initiated combat with me. When I first met Myles and talked about the Higardi with him, I thought the Higardi guards would be friendly toward me. Again I reiterate that I don't know how they came to be hostile. I don't ever remember initiating combat with them (back me up ppl - if anyone else is in the same situation). I'm pretty sure the game designers have implemented some way for faction relations to be mended. Is there anyone far enough in the game to know how this can be done? The game manual doesn't talk about this.
Thanks |
Btw, if all else fails, I wonder if there's an editor/cheat/hack that would allow you to change faction ratings? It would certainly be nice to be able to talk to the Higardi again.
|
Hit them by accident or deliberately, they'll be hostile at you. You have to get Myles in your party.
