I've made my way to the swamp. I noticed from the start that the game was pretty dark and I struggled a little in the treetops hoping that the next section would improve, but I'm not sure I'll be able to go any further if I can't brighten things up some. If I look straight down I can make out the bricks in the road, but if I look up it's total blackness. I've got my moniter settings as bright as possible and the gamma in game options to max. Using the most powerful light spell possible (which doesn't really seem to do much) Using the DX7 setting to play If anyone has any ideas I'd appreciate it

On the screen where you can LOAD your games from, there's something in there for VIDEO. Right in there, you can adjust the contrast. It should help. (Doing this by memory, so sorry if it's vague)

I can't help you on the technical side, mine is doing fine with the game settings, but I've found with some games when I just can't see like I want to, the only solution is to play in a darkened room - even no lights at all.
Kinda makes day play difficult though, unless you have some dark curtains. judee |
same. my screen has been fine in the swamp area.
Do you have the full powered light spell? That's what I had last time I got that far. |
I had the exact same problem with my Syncmaster. It wasn't the game (well sorta) it was my monitor. I gave it a good whack on the side, and bingo, I could see again. I sometimes have to blow some canned air into the back to brighten things up. I'm not sure how, but this only happens when I play wizardry. Really wierd.
If you exit out to the desktop, is it darker there as well? |
Aye, good point about the LIGHT spell as well.

since you said you had tried almost everything that's been suggested, how about changing from DX7 to OpenGL or Software Rendering? using Software Rendering usually takes care of that kind of problem. let us know what happens! V***V |
Wow... so ya tried all of that and still no go?
Do other games that use DX7 work fine? I have never heard of it being so dark ya could hardly make out what's going on?! |
~~V~~
yah! i have seen this problem cropping up more than you would think on tech support sites for newly released games in the last half a year or so. myst3, por2, arcanum are just a few of the most recent ones... (of course, ubisoft tech support is horrible, as it's monitored by mail bots and i think you have to be a close friend of god to get to even lvl 2 tech with them! V***V |
I've noticed in my own game that whenever I load a saved game it is always darker than it should be...not too dark to see most times but I've learned to adjust the gamma (in "options~video) to the darkest setting whenever it is light enough to deal with so that I can adjust it to a brighter level when need be...at one point I had it set as bright as it could be and the game was still dark.
I don't understand how it could be such a progressive and sometimes seemingly random problem since when I started the game with the default settings, it looked fine. Maybe a defrag of my hard drive is in order? I know its been a while and I need to study for a final tomorrow so defragging will for sure keep me away from my PC today LOL! |

it seems to be one of those things that no one has a hard and fast solution for. however, if you're interested, i have seen it attributed to those with "ghost" drivers. once they cleaned out all video drivers, from all sources (including deleting multiple reg keys, etc), it cleared up the problem. unfortunately, a lot of install programs are to blame, apparently, as they don't delete older drivers, instead just load on top. esp if you use non-chipset drivers. the gradual degradation is from older drivers getting loaded and reloaded and then good drivers loading on top etc till there is quite a mess with drivers fighting for precedence each time you fire up the old pc. so, i have long since added "ghost hunting" to my weekly regimen of defrag and scandisk (uh... not necessarily in that order. LOL) well, enjoy your time off. read a book, while the rest of us PLAY WIZARDRY!! |

I'll have to confer with KHaN, our resident techie as to how we could clean up my system beyond the defrag (that just finished LOL) I'd love to use my time off leisurely but I have a comprehensive final in Texas Gov't tomorrow on 19 study guides that I need to know. I got almost halfway through re-reading them and was thankful to find a lot of the information to be familiar LOL...that means I have a chance of passing. Can't stay long...must finish re-reading what I can and get to bed early since the test is the first thing on my agenda tomorrow. :D I wish I could say I'll get back to playing tomorrow, but I have a thousand word paper to write for my English final that is due first thing Tuesday. *sigh* maybe Wednesday? No! LOL I have another final on Thursday and then another on Friday...after that though it is 4 weeks school free for me! |
