Wizardry 8 update 3:36 PM (your time) - Robert "Apache" Howarth - Games: Role Playing - (2)
According to Linda Curry, the project leader at SirTech of Canada for Wizardry 8, they will be releasing a 150 meg playable demo for the game on Wednesday, October 31st. And in case you missed it, the game will be in stores on Nov. 15th (although I'm not sure who is publishing it).

Do you know if that's a download or will it be in magazines?

A download is what I am hearing - there is some talk of getting into magazines, but given the time frame for release this may be difficult.

I imagine it will be available at the official site!

I was at Babbages and the manager said it was cancelled. I almost had a fit! He said the last release date he had was March 2001. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif

I went to EB and the assured me of the November date! Whew...that was close! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

Just go to the Sirtech site and follow the lead - the forum recommends you use the first of the two sites (a corrupt file was found on the other), and the closest server to you (choice of Indiana, NY, and Virginia). I started download an hour ago on my basic 56K - getting 3.8 kps - 9 hours 12 mins to go, 13% downloaded, 18.7 of 142 MB http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif. Hope I get the download before you finish the whole demo http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif.

Just finished downloading http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif - got up this morning and there was only 10 mins left to go. Have installed, get the first two Sirtech things come up, then hang http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif. Hope it's just the drivers - off to update them. Please don't tell me the DL file is corrupt (grrr).

Love the signature Pangur Ban http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif,

Download of 142 MB all secure - program installed http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif. Start up, see promo, load game - sure, then just when it's coming up it spits me to Windows http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/frown.gif. Started downloading lastest video driver, but it's 6 MB (hah, tiny by comparison I know) and I am out of time. I have to go to work (sigh!!!!!!!). MUST get this to work tonight!!!!!!

The demo looks GREAT. I was able to figure out most of the interface very quickly. Combat runs smoothly. I'm still having to use keyboard for movement (maybe that's the way it's supposed to be) but can use right-click to "look" around with mouse. The graphics are STUNNING. Man, now I can't wait for Nov 15!

Cheers,

Hiya Everyone!

Hey, Davros, I have a 56k modem too. I tried to DL the demo overnight but got booted at 72% while I was sleeping. I have resumability so I started again when I got home from school.

All done with the download but I have to refrain from setting it up to insure I'll get my shopping and housework done today!
I'm dyin'! I have a busy schedule for the weekend too!

Ha ha - latest video driver did not fix my problem - still got ooted back to windows at game load. Theeeeeeen http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif, I looked at my version of DirectX - been so long since I installed a game (ie since W&W), so I was running version 7 - oh bother and befusucate these dwarves - umm, so after 8 more megs of download, we at last have :

SUCCESS http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif.

It runs smoothly, although I have only tested on lowest graphics resolution. Decided to RTFM before I get too far though.

Enjoy everyone http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/hihi.gif

Thanks for the heads up on DX8 Davros!
I'm still running 7 myself!
I can't believe I am actually using restraint and not installing until my work is done! It hurts LOL!

Hi Saz - mybe you have caught up with this by now, but you don't need to use the kekboard for movement - change the default on the mouse in options. There is one there where R click sets your look rotation, and L hold is the movement. I picked that up from the Vault Network board :D .

Neb 11-03-2001 09:34 AM

I just DLed the demo yesterday, IT ROCKS! Woooohoooo! Can't wait till they get around to letting us europeans try out the game too!

Moni 11-03-2001 10:41 AM

Who was I kidding? Only myself LOL!
I broke down and installed last night.
I played for two hours and had a blast. :D
I have more work to do today but I just had to have a taste of the game.
I like it! I want more!

Sazerac 11-03-2001 12:50 PM

Hoo-rah, Moni!!! So glad you liked it!!! You too, Neb. I can't wait until Nov 15th now!

LOL Yes, I figured that out after the first hour or so of play, never posted back up here, though! Thanks for the tip, though...I'm sure there's others out there who will need to know that, too.

One thing I REALLY love about Wizardry 8 so far is the music, it's GREAT, I've got the "Tough Combat" sound playing right now in the background.

I am worried about whether or not I'll be allowed to get the game though. San Antonio's job market is in bad shape and the company Rex works for just layed off 10% of its work force a couple of days ago. He is the only person in the company who did not get a pay cut to boot. He is valuable to them, but if they can't keep their heads above water, he may be unemployed before Thanksgiving, which means no Wiz 8 for me until I can buy it used. :(

I love the demo too! I may not be right in here with everyone else playing it as soon as it is released, but you know, I'll eventually get my hands on it!

Neb 11-03-2001 02:52 PM

Will Wizardry 8 support multiplayer in any way?

Neb 11-04-2001 11:33 AM

I was playing the Wizardry 8 demo a short while ago, and I thought: "Wow, this game sure is
bug-free, everything functions as it should,
the monsters even have a decent AI." then,
I decided to slaughter Burz, because,
I thought he was just a bit too annoying to be allowed to live, that and I figured he ought to be worth a lot of XP, so, after a battle that I almost lost because my incompetent Pixie mage couldn't cast a spell without it backfiring I finally slaughtered Burz, then, I decided to rest and reenter the monastery to see if I had missed anything, I rested, and, guess what, CRASH, got dumped to my desktop along with an error message,
*sigh* and I thought that I had finally found a bug-free and otherwise perfect game.

Moni 11-04-2001 12:13 PM

I had the same happened to me, Neb. Well, except for the spell backfiring part!
I am hoping that in the demo at least, he must stay alive. ;)
You're right about the music too.
I doubt that this will be a game where the music haunts me in my sleep!

I don't think so, Neb, that's going to be it's one drawback...it'll be like Wizards & Warriors for that. Wiz 9 was going to be multiplayer, but Sir-Tech has scrapped that (sigh).

So the thing about Sir-Tech going out of business is true? Or are they just giving up on something extremely popular that would probably sell really well for no reason at all?

I'm sorry to hear about that, Moni! Yes, things are tough all over, and the economy is still taking a beating for it. I'm lucky I'm working 40+hour teaching assignments right now (which amounts to a 60+ hour week) to get the extra money I need.

Check on Ebay after a bit...and also, prices tend to come down on the games right before the holidays (during the sales) ;) I got Wizards and Warriors back in October 2000 on a "special promotion" sale price of $30, when it was normally selling for $50...and that was only two weeks after its release. You just gotta keep an eye open for the bargains!

Anyway, best of luck, and I hope you can find a good price on Wiz 8 fairly quickly!

Cheers,

Moni 11-04-2001 04:59 PM

Thank you Saz!
Rex told me this morning if it isn't over 50.00 (not including tax) we can probably afford it the day it is released! He feels pretty secure with his job and we afford ourselves no luxeries these days so as long as he is still employed come the 15th, I'll most likely have it new! That will be so exciting! Getting to play the game new with everyone else! I always seem to have gotten my games in the past a month or two late and by the time I found message boards, all of my problems were solved! It seemed too easy LOL! I am looking forward to the challenge and the option of so many different character-types to play!
*All Smiles*
