Very Cool, Wyvern! Only thing is, I don't do credit cards http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/frown.gif If they'd allow a money order or check...
Most interesting; my dad was born on 7/14 (Bastille Day). Well, Wiz 8 would be a great birthday present for you, no? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif -Saz I just contacted them online to see if alternative payments can be allowed....waiting to find out (anticipation).... July 15th? My god...I sure hope it doesnt take that long. Thats 4 months to this date. I think that's so ridiculous....but after 9 years.....whats a few more? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
Hmm, good info Saz, I dont have a credit card so I have to pay by money orders too....by the by, what is the cost? Drow Warrior...are you Chaotic Evil and praying to Lloth? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif Scronan |
Hehe, I guess so, now! Actually, read my response on the "Drow Warrior" thread on the WW board that Slug initiated to get my take on the Dark Elven race. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

...but Sir-tech Cananda does not endorse this release date. They say that as soon as a date is set, it will be put up on their website. EBWorld is probably guessing. If Sir-tech has yet to sign with a publisher, the delay could be considerably longer than a few months. One can hope, however, and sometimes the rumor mill produces the truth.

Thanks Wyv!
Yoink! Heh heh. I'll steal that link and save it for later when I get home... http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/hihi.gif Serath |
Does anyone else agree with me that having Wiz 8 REQUIRE 3-D acceleration would not be in the best interest regarding the game's ability to sell?
And what do people who buy it for someone not knowing that they don't have 3-D acceleration do wih it once the non-usable gift is presented to someone who can't play it? Sir Tech hints that a software mode MAY be added but thats it...just a maybe. I won't be losing out on being able to play but I think a lot of other people who would LIKE to will for lack of being able to update their system for the sake of a game. Seems like a big marketing mistake to me. Odd...I have been promoted to Magister on my 99th post but says I have 100. Check out my status on the W&W forum...98. Where did # 99 go? ; ) [This message has been edited by Moni (edited 03-16-2001).] |
Even though I know full well the danger of sweeping statements, I'd say that the vast majority of 233MHz and up computers already have video cards capable of 3D acceleration.
Tentative specs from the FAQ: "Windows 95, 98, or 2000; a Pentium II 233 or better; 64 MB of RAM; 4x CD drive; and a soundcard. A 3D accelerator with 8 MB of texture memory or more is required." Those are really modest specs. Depending on how their engine works, adding a "software mode" might require a lot of work. The way I see it is that one of the goals of Wizardry 8 was to bring good 'ol fashioned RPG goodness into the high-tech future. To play this game then, we are going to need modern computer system. Given that, I don't think that needing a 3D card is much a problem. [This message has been edited by Eldurin (edited 03-16-2001).] |
I agree. I think Sir-Tech would be shooting themselves in the foot if they didn't include a software mode. They would be cutting out a fair portion of the market if they didn't. A lot of people will not upgrade their systems for the sake of a game, no matter how good it is. I would, but hey, that's me. Did I mention I want this game? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

I would imagine that Sir-Tech, or any other company building a game, would put in a software mode simply because, as was seen in WW, the biggest problem with games is the lack of compatibility with certain board configurations and manufacturers. There has to be a "common denominator" to fall back on, or otherwise, somewhere, someone's particular configuration won't work and they'll be screaming blue murder. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...s/rolleyes.gif I think the HPI board is a perfect example of that.

I think the reverse might be true here, though. Wizards & Warriors was designed in "software mode." and hardware specific calls were added later, much to the game's detriment. I ran the game in software mode and it worked great for me.
On the other hand, it seems Wizardry 8 is being developed using hardware calls from the beginning, so while there will be issues that certain will arise, the mess that resulted from W&W should not recur with Wizardry 8. (For what it's worth, I agree that there should be a software mode for compatibility issues, but it wouldn't suprise me if it comes out later as a major patch.) |
BTW what Sir-Tech Canada has been saying on their website about not wanting to raise hopes about a release date, and not having a publisher, is the line they've been touting for over a year now. With a press release package in the works, I have to assume they have found a publisher. Perhaps they have just not updated their NEWS site. Even on Ironworks, the dateline changes automatically (java app?) but the news remains the same...
