What are people's favorite critters to come across in a dungeon?
I'm not talking about forests or caves, no ma'am. I want to know what people WANT to see in a dungeon crawl of epic proportions. (Sure there will be a forest and some caves, even a city or two and perhaps some catacombs...)
Give me some feedback, please, and I can pretty much guarantee that a part of this dungeon will resemble, if not be, your favorite dungeon.

Ninja's!!!!

Hivetyrant 09-25-2005 09:21 PM

Ok, not really... :D

but what I think would be cool is a creature that shapeshift's, so when you approach it, it just looks like a wall, and when you get too close, it attack's....

Or something like that ;)

There are several AD&D creatures like this. The most famous is the 'mimic' which in the old monster manual had a picture of a treasure chest that had just grown a mouth and claws. :D Also, there was the 'cloaker' which pretended to be part of the dungeon ceiling and would drop on unsuspecting adventurers. There were also creatures that looked like stalagmites and would drop on adventurers as well.

This is a tough one, there are just so many great monsters to choose from. However, one of my personal favourites has always been the Dracolich. Not sure why, I just think it is an awesome monster and one that any self respecting adventuring party would fear to meet in a dark dungeon.

Kobolds.

Lots and lots of Kobolds.

:D

Lucern 10-05-2005 03:45 PM

One I always liked out of Ravenloft - I think it was called a 'living wall' - made up of those it pulls into itself.

It's just plain creepy.

Other than that, a very powerful lich with some death knights. If you insist on living creatures, give me a multi-headed hydra or a beholder any day

These are all good ideas and most of my favorites as well.
I do wonder how I might fit the ninjas into my dungeon, though. :D

What about in catacombs and caves?

Tarlanon 10-13-2005 12:30 PM

Kobolds.

Lot's and lot's of Kobolds.

:D

manikus 10-14-2005 11:35 PM

Kobolds were my first icons...I could do some more...

Catacombs: skeletal warriors or even ghouls at lower levels...a good strong vampire or mummy a bit higher.

Ghouls ghasts wights, oh my.

For caves, you can't go wrong with carrion crawlers, jellies/oozes, and very large spiders. At lower levels, I love goblin hordes. What can I say, I like the classics ;)

SpiritWarrior 11-04-2005 07:19 PM

Beholder and beholder kin. Lizardmen. Undead Shadows, Wights.

Umber Hulks. They were a lot of fun to brawl with in Secret of the Silver Blades.

manikus 11-18-2005 03:25 AM

Oh yeah...there will be umber hulks. The first Goldbox game I played was SoSB.

Hi I am new here

As for the question: I want to see mimics and dopplegangers. Piercers and the monster nicknamed the "land shark" the Bullette. I want a challenge to defeat, not some simple little goblin or kobold

manikus 12-10-2005 11:10 PM

Thanks for adding the creatures yu would like to see. There are going to be lots of kobolds and goblins though. But, I've got some devious plans that won't make them so simple and easy to thwart. :D :D :D

Xorns. And a Living Wall or two. More than creatures, though, I would like to see a dungeon that looks like it was desinged for something else than adventuring.

Ziroc 12-18-2005 04:49 AM

In goldbox games, my favorites (and most feared at low leve) were Purple Worms and Bulletes.

Drow were awesome too..

Milanthir 01-03-2006 03:06 PM

Gelatinous cubes are a personal favorite. I also like rust monsters (and the psionic equivalent). Anything that's extraordinarily dangerous in an *interesting*/unexpected way.

Gimli 02-02-2006 06:27 AM

Hook Horrors are what I think you meant, they are the ones that drop from stalagmites.

manikus 02-02-2006 11:21 AM

I was thinking of the creatures that look like stalagmites and drop on unsuspecting adventurers. But, hook horrors are good too. :D
