It's time to fess up...
Lots of people are talking about new designs, now I want to know who is making the art for these designs. Hmm? If there is something new to look at, I want to know, heck, we all do. :D I know there are some talented artists out there... -manikus |
Well, I'm trying to make some new art...
So far I haven't had much time on this computer for doing any art, this one being shared with tha family and such. BUT, just 5 minutes ago we got the package in the (snail) mail for the high speed internet and now (like tonite!!!) all my stuff shall be loaded up onto my laptop and then its GO TIME!!!! As for seeing the art that I'm talking about, that'll come about soon. Like in a week. All I've done so far is to mess around with 2 things: the window that surrounds the 3D view and to do some wall & background stuff. And none of it is finished yet. Yep, im trying to get some new stuff going, I am currently working on som large monsters.
-Dragons (Just finished a cool drawing of a black dragon) -Ogres -And other monsters I think of ;) Thats what im focusing on at the momment, though if necesary I can make other stuff..... |
Well, here is one pic of a dragon I was working on...
Didnt take very long, though I dont think the Ready and attack pose are different enough.... http://img229.exs.cx/img229/1687/dragonb9hv.png EDIT:My main problem is that I dont know what people want, I dont visit the Yahoo group all that often, in fact, hardly ever, so maybe people should post their project, ideas, requirments, wants and so on, and if possible get a mod to make them a sticky untill they are finished ;) [ 02-09-2005, 05:29 PM: Message edited by: Hivetyrant ] |
Well, I think you have the right idea and your pics ROCK. the only recommendation I would give is on the dragon pic above, you have it lying down and then standing up. what I think you should do with that is have it standing up and then like rearing up on its hind legs and reaching forward (like clawing at its enemy).
As for what ppl want if you're looking to do some art for ppls mods I might have a few things I need to ask for help with (I might need the help with art if I want to get this out any time soon). This is still up in the air (kinda looking at my options here: do I do the art myself when it takes a while for me to get something to look anywhere near what I want, just so I can say I did it all; or do I ask for help figuring that would really cut the time it'd take to make the mod.) I'll leave a msg here about this. I'm leaning towards the idea of asking for art help so I can speed the time up it takes me to put these mods out. Oh yeah!!! I added another mini-mod idea to the list, check the other post (this makes three that I'll be taking on, but I'll be trying to finish out one soon). Well, I WAS doing some new art (I had re-done the window that surrounds the 3D view and was doing some walls and a character icon), but I had to re-load windows on to the computer (due to corrupted files from spyware!!! ) and that killed it. Now I DL-ed Daz studio and I like (no, love!!!) what I see; but I'm thinking I'm going to have to take some time to learn the program (and that is going to slow me down a little :( ).

My sympathies- and I hope you still had all of your paperwork, etc. The hard drive crashed on our laptop a couple of months ago and when we re-installed everything, we didn't have the necessary info to re-register some of the pre-installed software (to be honest, we're not sure that we ever had the MS stuff :( ). The only suggestion customer service had for us (Dell) was to upgrade b/c it costs less than new. (As if...)
Glad you like DAZ|Studio. Every question I've had has been answered in the studio forum at the daz site. As soon as I do something half-way decent, I am going to post it over there and let them all know about Dungeon Craft. :D -manikus |
Hmm, I think in the next little while I will rip some art from might and magic 6-8. Monsters, wallsets, etc. However, somebody will need to host them because I don't support material on my site. I only support my projects.

Just wanted to throw my quick $.02 in here (work has me buried lately),
Hive, that dragon, the quality of it, rocks! :D |
you have to be careful with a commercial games artwork, as some of these companies will not be as nice as WoTC was with granting permission to use their artwork. So if someone posts up the art or a game with the artwork in it they could try some legal stuff with copyrights.

True enough- Lucasarts is very proactive about protecting it's copyright. And I know that there were issues in the FRUA world concerning copyright but it's been so long that I can't remember which gaming company it was (but I think maybe it's Id). the important thing is to list where you got it, so that if someone has an issue with our community using the graphics, we will know what they are talking about and can remove it.
But, I think since we are not trying to make any money off of it, most of our transgressions will probably be overlooked. Of course, once 1.0 comes out and DC gets super famous... :D :D :D :D :D :D -manikus -manikus |
Hivetyrant - I agree that all of your art looks amazing. Even that little beholder - I've wished I could make that pic (which I've seen all over the web) into a combat icon but just don't have the skill to create a convincing attack pose. (For an example of said lack of skill, see the gnoll default icon in DC.) I think the icon is about the right size, too, for a beholder (not 4x human size as they were in frua.)
On the dragon icon: I agree with Manikus' comment that the dragon should not go from sitting to standing. Perhaps a slight change of angle on the wings would make the look more different? Or have the neck arch back, making some room for a breath attack coming from the mouth. (You could recolour the icon and change the head and wing features slightly to allow for multiple dragon types, ie red, green, blue, gold etc.) I would think people shouldn't use five different versions of the same icon all in a single design, but this would allow more flexibility and choice, as currently there are almost no dragon combat icons. The shadow on the dragon looks light grey in the version you posted. I think for use in the game it will look better in black. (I realise you were probably going to do that.) One comment on DC combat icons generally: I think that you (and most others) should try to fill the 48x48 square (or 96x96 or whatever it is in the particular case) more fully. That is, the monster should come right to the edges of the square, in either the ready or attack pose, or, preferably, in both. If icons are too spaced out, it can be difficult to tell if you will move into the adjacent square or into the square occupied by the monster. This is especially evident in some horse and centaur icons that people did for UA, where practically the whole of one square was blank, but the game counted it as "part of" the monster. Perhaps the dragon icon could be expanded to fill the square and it will look more effective in the game. For the beholder perhaps you could just move it up slightly (the ready pose could go up higher, I think) and place a shadow underneath so it is obvious that it is hovering. Of course, having said that, there are some monsters that are just too small to fill a square, I suppose. In those cases, I think any gap should ideally be towards the top, unless they're flying monsters like little bats, in which case they should be near the top, gap in the middle and shadow near the bottom. Those aren't meant as criticisms, just general comments. As I say, everything you (Hivetyrant) have done looks excellent, and I just can't wait to see the other monster icons you do. BTW, in answer to the earlier question, I'm from the Burnside area (Eastern suburbs). It's great to have a fellow Aussie and (sort of) Adelaidian who is interested in DC. Oh, and Manikus, I think most of those character icons look really great. I'll DL them all, of course! The style I like best is that of the dwarf in red, the first male halfling and the first male gnome - I think they fill out the square a bit more. Were they converts from Autery's UA icons ? They have that feel about them. I loved his style! Great work guys. Steve PS Heh - 2 posts in succession. I'm in business. |

I'm also working on doing the same for the collected works of kaz-kieth, hans and kheyd. -manikus |
Well, they are very good conversions. I look forward to seeing more.
