You know, we all have projects that are incomplete/abandoned. I have an idea. Why don't we upload some of our incomplete projects somewhere, and let each other play around with them. I think this might create new interest in abandoned works, as well as inspiring others to continue their projects, or try something new that their project might need. This could also be a good way for others to learn some of the little tricks out there in the code part.
What say you? |
That sounds like a great idea. I'd love to see what others have been upto, and hopefully find some bits of code that will snazz up my own game.

i think this is a great idea. the only problem would be finding some place to put them all...which may not be that big of a problem. a folder called "unfinished designs" can be put up at yahoogroups...in fact i'll do that momentarily.
follow the link below. i don't know if you will have to be a member to download, but you definitely will to upload. http://groups.yahoo.com/group/UAForever/ in the menu on the right hand side, click on "files" and then again on "unfinished designs". please create a subfolder or put it all in one zip file. most importantly, let everybody know that you've uploaded something! :D -manikus |
Cool! I'll get to work making my Sunless Citadel module suitable for downloading. Currently it is nothing more than 3 maps, and a couple of events, one of which is nothing more than a test. But....i'll get it up there over the weekend

This is a great idea TwilightKing. Kudos.
Like many others I am guessing, RL has claimed most of my time these days (darn jobs!). Sadly though, I really don't have any unfinished/abandoned mods. I only really have the 1, and I do intend to go back and finish it some day. =) I personally am hoping for some more time this summer, but hopefully some time will free up here to continue my work on it. But I do look forward to trying/looking into these other designs. Maybe it can inspire me all over again! :D |
Real Life dealt me another blow Sunday when my harddrive crashed. So I won't be uploading my mod for at least a week or two. Fortunately, I do have a version backed up.....somewhere.
I have a new PC on order (finally getting a Pentium 4!!! I was using a Celeron 433 Mhz) and when it arrives I will get to work. [ 04-20-2004, 12:10 PM: Message edited by: TwilightKing ] |
I have an old UA adventure that I did up many moons ago. I'll convert that to DungeonCraft but it will take me a while as I'm going away for a few weeks for business.
|
i think this is a great idea, so to support i was looking through my unifinished designs to see what i'll work on again and what i can put up for others. turns out that my unfinished designs are not much to look at. :D i get an idea, jot down a paragraph or two and start looking for art or making my own. then, i get sidetracked. not a lot of coding takes place. there are two exceptions but i'm still working on them- see my projects page. maybe i'll just keep looking, or at least finish one a little more. ;)

Got my new PC!!!!!!!!!!!!
And through the miracle of dumb, blind luck, I was able to resurrect my old hard drive and retrieve all of my old DC files! Yes..it was a good day. I hope to post some stuff by the weekend. |
congrats on the new computer. can't wait to see what you've been working on. :D

You know, TwilightKing; this is a good idea in many ways! Back in the old days of the FRUA gaming community (with all its awesome hackers who went to great lengths to make FRUA more U for your A...), they had the idea to do group adventures, like; for example, to have someone create a overland map and a story, then send it to someone else so they could do the 1st dungeon level, then someone else for the next... You get the idea.
By the way, as a side note, anyone looking for some insight or new ideas should look up the old UA newsletters. These had event coding ideas that were worth checking out. Now, if I could only remember the web address... Anyways, obviously with the renewed enthusiasm and multiple replies this post generated, ppl like this idea. When I get done moving, I'll check out the sunless citadel and maybe upload one of my own. SilentThief |
I was also thinking about suggesting a group project. If anyone thinks they may have time to do this, let's discuss it!
|
there have been several ideas for shared designs on the ua list and in the newsletters. i've always thought it would be cool to be part of one. we could use space at the yahoogroups list to store it (if it becomes too big, we could spin off a separate list).
there is a lot of pertinent info in the ua newsletters, as mentioned, so here's the link- http://www.giga.or.at/pub/ua/pc/uanews/ enjoy! :D -manikus |
so where do we start?
genre? i'm interested in doing fantasy setting? it would be cool to do a city level? more interested in low and medium anyone have any ideas? -manikus |
Fantasy is good. City..GOOD! I like the level range too. Perhaps we could do our own Pool of Radiance type adventure. Not a remake, but an inspired by. We all know it. We all love it. Crap, I wish I had a floppy drive so I could play it again!
But the reason I bring up PoL is it's simplicity. An urban setting with plenty of dungeon action, and even some wilderness. If this project is successful, we could spin off a sequel of course. Our very own 'Gold Box' series if you will. If we, as a team, could make these adventure really cool, they could kinda be like the defacto DungeonCraft modules. The yardstick that new designers will measure their designs against (and hopefully exceed!) What we need first...solid story. Manikus, I am definately all for this. I will contribute everything that I can. |
story driven is very good. :D
where should we put this? forgotten realms, greyhawk, dragonlance, etc, something original? single character or party? heavy magic or light magic? how important is religion? i've probably got a million questions. |

Religion can be what we make of it. Definately throw in some temples for healing and such, as for as specific gods for clerics, maybe keep that mind for later expansions. Campaign World....I feel a poll coming on! I'm cool with any, really. We could make a simple one for DC, make it DC's default world. But that may be WAY too much work Would copyright be problematic in using one of WotC's worlds? You've got a million questions? Keep 'em coming! I think we may have started something good.... PS: When we finish a design, Ziroc can make the box art! I remember seeing his post where he showed the 'Gold Box' version of his design. It was really cool! |
Awesome ideas everywhere!!! A poll it'll prolly have to be, altho I think it'd be a better idea to make a world up than deal with a copyright problem.
The idea of still doing the unfinished projects is still a good idea, and I was gonna throw one (or two) of the few I started up on the website after I finish moving. I still got a bunch of ideas for this world I created, but I was thinking of trying to keep it simple by doing just a city adventure for my first scenario, and maybe if/when the writer block comes... Now here's something else to consider because I've seen a bunch of requests on this, What about doing an adventure that is a tutorial??? I remember the FRUA tutorial had both a book and an adventure to go with it, so you could see the events as you made them. You could even do text messages to explain the settings, or to be really extra special; do movies that show a drop down of the window and circle or highlight the setting... hmmm, this gets me thinking... BTW, I understand as the beginning thread of this topic was that "real life" is a real pain that sometimes slows down or even stops us for a time; with that in mind anyone know how CocoaSpud is doing? I mean, he's the genie that granted our wishes and the genius that (I thought) was making DC. With everyone having "real life" problems at this time (me, I'm going to be moving across the country for the 2nd time in a year), I do understand hearing less from everyone. But I was just wondering... Just a' thinkin' and a' wonderin'... SilentThief |
oh yeah, I was gonna ask this from the previous post, but the caffiene isn't working to help me organize any of my thoughts...(potion of haste + confusion, anyone?)
There was talk of doing a tutorial B4, is anyone seriously working on one???? If there is and since it seems like it has potential to be a long boring thing to do, perhaps I can help. I'd be yet another way to get familiar with DC events and processes, give me ideas on bugs and/or new events and procedures that may be necessary to code, as well as being another of my many projects(but one I'd try to do things on in a more timely manner). oh and the statement I made in the previous post (as in "and the genius that (I thought) was making DC"), that wasn't supposed to sound as snotty, it was supposed to sound like "the (I thought) genius...", If you read that 'Spud, I want you to know I love your work!!! SilentThief |
it's been pretty nifty to see people get excited about this game again. well, i actually mean to see people write about thier excitement. :D
real life can be a pain in the rear, sometimes in mysterious ways- i have a ton of free time for about another week, but have been having allergy related sinus-headaches severe enough to seriously limit my recreational stareing at computer screens. with that said, i'm about to post at yahoogroups and in a new thread here, some questions i've thought of about doing a collaborative project and my answers to them. btw, i heard from cocoaspud just about a week ago and it sounds like he is trying to clear up some bugs with the engine before he puts out the next release. -manikus |
Another thing that's getting me excited is playing the old goldbox games! I just downloaded dosbox, installed all my FR games, and am currently working through Gateway to the Savage Frontier. Man, it has got to be over 10 years since I last played that game on my C64.
