what the heck does turn undead do???
|
Hi Artea, depending on the level of your Cleric, Turning undead may either cause undead creatures to run away, and sometimes even die. Some Undead don't seem to be affected though, but it is definately useful.
|
Turning undead allows a cleric to "channel" godly power in order to drive away or destroy utterly all undead creatures. The more powerful the undead (vampire, lich) the harder they are to affect. They may even get saves at those levels. The cleric does have some limits on the numbers of undead he can affect.
|
Something worth mentioning is that Evil Clerics( ie Viconia) will actually cause Undead to join the party much like a summoned creature. I managed to get a group of Vampires that attacked me to fight amongst themselves.
|
dudes, i know this is old news, but i didn't know what the turn undead button does either! i just forced a bad motherfucker linch to join my party hahahaha too bad i discovered the real function of this on the 5th chapter.. this could have been soooo useful on hard battles! thanks anyway

Hmmm yeah...I'm trying to build up my cleric right now (9th level ranger/14th level cleric)...I want to see if I can get Templar to a point that I can just walk into Bodhi's lair in chapter 6 and blow the Vampires apart (and, if that doesn't work, then do that in Saradush in the old jail)
|
nothing like turning a liche with an evil cleric to make those lovely 9th level mage spells availiable to you ;)

To Masteraleph: It depends on your level. I suspect the game that your Turn Undead level (i.e., your level in the case of clerics) must be greater than the level of the turned undead if you want to suceed in turning. The greater is the difference between your Turn Undead level and the monster level the higher is your chance to destroy the undead. Let us note that liches have level 20 - 26.
My experience. I like to play a party of three dual class characters so that my level is 25 or so when it comes to the final deal with Bodhi. My ranger/cleric can enter the lair, leave the rest of the party near the exit and stroll the lair with Turn Undead active. All vampires, wraiths and similar monsters get destroyed immediately. They have no chance. Bodhi seems to be protected from Turn Undead - I have never succeed in turning her. Also those warriors formed from a skull, shield and sword are immune to turning undead. |
I never like to use Turn Undead... Just slice their heads off and play soccer... it is much more fun that way!!!

Laugh at other fighters as they try in vain to hack through a Lich's spell protection. Earn their envy as you sing a hymn to your God and vanquish the Lich without even breaking a sweat. Turn Undead, you would be poorer without it. Kills multiple Vampires in one round! |
I think its the long time taken which makes most gamers ignore turn undead in favor of a more physical solution (such as myself). However there's no doubting that it can be devastating at high levels.

Long time? It only takes one round... ...
What other method allows you to mass kill Vampires in one round? [ADD] PS: You can delete your posts through the edit function as well. Select the checkbox above the message icons. [/ADD] [ 05-29-2002, 11:48 AM: Message edited by: Dundee Slaytern ] |
Ah, thank you for that tip.
Anyway, in the middle of a vampire melee, standing still and turning undead is gonna be pretty difficult, unless you successfully manage to position your clerics out of it. Most gamers would much rather hack n slash instead. Sunburst and False Dawn are pretty good spells against vampires, it won't mass kill them like turn undead but its still pretty damaging and fighters won't have a problem mopping up the vamps after that. |
Haha, make sure you don't have Keldorn and Viconia together in your party tho, i did and when Vic turned undead keldorn ran away in fear! haha :D
|
Tip: Do not stand still when Turning Undead. You can run around like a mad man and still Turn Undead, it will not interrupt the skill. ;)
So people have no excuse that Turn Undead is hard to use. |
Turn Undead Level 18 is enough to kill Liches, except of course certain special Liches. I don't know about Vampires, but it should be in the area of Level 18.
The trick with Turning Undead is to stay moving so they can't hit you--but also keep them within the Turn Undead radius, which is something like 15 feet. My juiciest kill was in Watcher's Keep -- SMALL ToB SPOILER - - - - - One of the colors of the Globe Machine generates Undead. So, all I had to do was leave Turn Undead on (My Undead Hunter & Aerie) for a slaughterfest. The best one was 4 Devil Shades, who exploded simultaneously, and when you kill a Devil Shade, it spawns 2 Shadow Fiends, who of course explode 1 second later. Wheeeeee! |
