The Battle of Thermopylae as depicted by Frank Miller (Sin City). I think words fail to describe the sheer awesomeness of this trailer. :D

Dreamer128 12-22-2006 01:52 PM

bumping, cause it's worth watching. ;)

Bozos of Bones 12-22-2006 03:14 PM

You seen it? So, it's good, I take it?

Dreamer128 12-22-2006 06:36 PM

I was referring to the trailer, Bozos. I don't think the movie is out yet.

Bozos of Bones 12-22-2006 06:39 PM

Ah. Yeah, I watched the trailer, loved it. I asked because I've no idea when movies are out until they arrive here, and they usually arrive with a week or few delay.

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 12-22-2006 08:10 PM

What's it about? It looks very good.

Balintherlas 12-23-2006 12:02 AM

the 300 trojans who held off the persian army which ive heard numbered in the millions. but I think its based directly on the Frank Miller comic book

Variol (Farseer) Elmwood 12-23-2006 07:25 AM

Ok, I looks a little fantasy'ish.

What does Veni, Vidi, Vici mean again, I forgot?

Dreamer128 12-23-2006 07:33 AM

'I came, I saw, I conquered'.. err.. I think.

Balintherlas 12-24-2006 07:06 PM

Some historical background from Wikipedia

03.09.07 is that March or September? I hate when they put the date that way!

Looks good. Lots of mindless violence, but one thing bothered me, why has every man in this film have to be half-naked?

Kazilan 01-10-2007 06:30 PM

This looks awesome, I love the look of movies based on graphic novels/comics when the director tries to retain the feel of the drawn image.

There's a cool work of historical fiction also about this moment in history, called The Gates of Fire by Steven Pressfield. Worth reading if you're into that sort of thing.

Meh. I can't say I'm impressed. The dialogue is cheesy, the visuals are... lacking and its romanticised. Sparta was never "good". Why does every film nowadays have to go on about "freedom"?

I think I'll be giving this one a miss.

Saw this a while back, and it looks awesome. I can't wait to see it.

Didn't they fight completely naked, historically? Or am I thinking of something else? I recall a friend of mine mentioning that it wasn't true to history because they had *some* clothing on.

The graphic novel was like that as well, I seem to recall, and it was a good read. And no, Spartans aren't "good" per se - they are, however, the heroes of this story. The story isn't exactly about Spartan society, it's about 300 men fighting a massive enemy to save their people and way of life. It kinda makes sense. This also isn't a documentary - of course it's romanticized.

The trailer is definitely awesome, but these days trailers are theatrical productions in themselves (like music videos). It's entirely possible that ALL the decent scenes in a 2 1/2 hour movie be squeezed into a 45 second trailer, as long as they are a ) put in out of sequence; b ) made to flash across the screen in quasi-subliminal fashion; and c ) accompanied by suitable mood music. Case in point? The Dungeons and Dragons movie (the WORST movie I'd seen in a while).

That said, this does look half-decent, and I'll be looking forward to watching it.

Balintherlas 01-23-2007 12:28 PM

I dont think so, I think this movie is really gonna surprise a lot of people who aren't expecting much.

Dron_Cah 01-23-2007 05:48 PM

I don't think the went onto the battle field naked, though I'm not positive. Your friend may have been thinking about wrestling in the original Olympics, which was indeed totally nude.
I know Roman custom (which took a lot of ideas from Spartan) was to wear armor of some fashion, so I would think that Spartans would be of similar ideal. Not to mention the hoplites wouldn't be very effective nude. Course, I might be totally off the mark, so it may be one of those things you want to look up.
