Man, this movie looks great, I'm pumped about it.

Marathon 02-17-2006 09:55 AM

Me too! I just watched a couple of clips from Quicktime.com last week and it looks awesome.

I forget who wrote and drew the graphic novel, but I am waiting for this movie, too. Hugo, Natalie, and the Wachowski Brothers directing.

I can't wait to see this movie, but i'm kind of worried about how much hype there is.

I don't want to be let down, but everything looks good so far

Balintherlas 03-18-2006 10:17 AM

Anyone seen it yet? I'm going today.

Balintherlas 03-19-2006 02:33 AM

Saw it and I gotta say, it was everyting I expected, which is a good thing.

Szass-Tam 03-19-2006 07:31 AM

I haven't seen the film, but the review I read was pretty damning.

Guardian review

Azred 03-19-2006 11:02 AM

I can see why the Wachowski brothers wanted to direct this one: an overbearing government, a freedom fighter who helps stir the public into standing up, a protoge who learns how to live freely--all elements from the Matrix.

I don't think many American audiences will fully appreciate--or even comprehend--the Guy Fawkes tie-in, though.

Other than that, a really good movie. Hugo is able to cleverly deliver his lines without ever having to show his face--which may all be dubbed, but that's ok. Natalie Portman seems to have figured out how to make her face work after trying to get through all that Star Wars quagmire. Stephen Rea seems a little plastic in his performance, but I think that is simply because the character was in a position where he had little or no choices in life.

Having read the graphic novel years ago, I see that Sin City has had its influence--directors are filming adaptations of graphic novels as accurately as they can, scene by scene.

Balintherlas 03-19-2006 12:28 PM

I can see why this movie might not get that many good reviews, with the anarchy theme when terrorism is stil a very real threat, but I think its stil a good movie worth seeing in theatres.

Azred 03-19-2006 03:44 PM

Actually, I think the movie is extremely relevant right now. We should fear governmental spying on citizens MORE than mere terrorism.

The Patriot Act itself defines "domestic terrorism" thusly:

Quote:

from the Patriot Act:
(5) the term 'domestic terrorism' means activities that--
(A) involve acts dangerous to human life that are a violation of the criminal laws of the United States or of any State;
(B) appear to be intended--
(i) to intimidate or coerce a civilian population;
(ii) to influence the policy of a government by intimidation or coercion; or
(iii) to affect the conduct of a government by mass destruction, assassination, or kidnapping; and
(C) occur primarily within the territorial jurisdiction of the United States.

The rubber-stamped issuance of warrants to spy on American citizens violates the spirit of the Constitution and could be argued to violate statement (5)(B)(i) of this section of the Act.

I was hoping this discussion wouldn't come up in this thread, as it is much more appropriate to the Current Events forum. Thus, I'll probably cite this thread and start such a discussion there.

Balintherlas 03-19-2006 04:33 PM

Fair enough, but has anyone read the comic and know what V's special powers or whatever are?

Azred 03-19-2006 05:16 PM

His "powers" are hinted at being only somewhat heightened strength and reflexes due to what was done to him (no spoilers for those who haven't read the graphic novel or seen the movie). He must have a higher-than-normal degree of intelligence as evidenced by his array of skills and his manner of speaking, although whether this is normal or accidentally achieved is not stated.

He himself would probably state that he is not superhuman; rather, the idea that he represents is.

I see, I'm confused though, is Guy Fawkes viewed as a hero or villian in England?

Larry_OHF 03-19-2006 10:26 PM

I LOVED the movie! I was not bothered at all by any message that was being sent through it...I listened, learned, felt, (there's a special idea...feeling...see the movie and you'll understand) and enjoyed the action as well as the messages and drama. I'd give it five stars.

BTW...I do not support every viewpoint they made in the movie, but to some, that means that I should hate the movie because it opposes my opinion. hah! Not!

That depends upon whom you ask.

If I lived in a country like that, Id prolly wanna do the same things that happened in the movie, so i didnt have a problem with it. Looks like no one else did either as its number 1 in the box office.

Great Flick!

And, are we so worthless that it would have to go this far before we found the courage to storm the houses of government, drag our leaders out onto the lawn, and lynch them in public? I surely hope not.

Remember, remember the 5th of November.
