I remember when the graphic novel came out (when was that? 1988? ). Frank Miller is an excellent story-teller so the movie will have a great plot. I certainly hope the movie is indeed shot in that high-contrast black-and-white that the trailers show because that will really add to the "grittiness" of the overall story. Irongrinder 03-29-2005 02:53 PM

Sin city is definately a movie I'm looking forward to, the trailers shows some real promiss.

I'm looking forward to this too.

Jotin 03-31-2005 10:17 AM

I got to see it tuesday at a screening. I thought it was awesome, very stylistic and very comic bookish. I could practically see the speech bubbles above the characters when they were talking.

Balintherlas 04-01-2005 10:52 PM

can someone help me out here, who are the good guys and who r the bad guys, the actor's names?

krunchyfrogg 04-02-2005 12:37 AM

Define "good" and "bad."

Although it's filmed in mostly black and white, things in this world rarely are.

I just got home, and thought it was absolutely amazing. Totally felt like reading the graphic novels again.

Good. Bad. *shrug* Who's the guy with the gun?

Balintherlas 04-02-2005 08:10 AM

hahaha fair enough

Irongrinder 04-02-2005 11:25 PM

bleh, won't be out till June here in Dutchyland :(

Timber Loftis 04-03-2005 01:00 AM

I saw it today with Rain, and we liked it a lot. Very nice and stylized. The list of stars is too numerous to point out, but let's just say that Jessica Alba has never looked better.

Balintherlas 04-03-2005 09:26 PM

I just saw it a lil bit ago and it was frickin sweet, girls just walkin around in thongs for most of the movie was definetly a plus. Couple questions though,
SPOILERS

is marv really dead and was josh hartnet's character just a hitman?

krunchyfrogg 04-04-2005 12:47 AM

Yes, and yes.

Thoran 04-04-2005 09:40 AM

It was ok, I think I'd have liked it more if I was back in my... ahmmm... 'horny 16 years old' days. :D To say this movie was targeted for young males feels like I'm wasting time pointing out the obvious. I think if you weighed all the outfits worn by all the women in the movie, you'd be hard pressed to get a pound or two.

The look of the film was well done, very 'graphic novelish'. I loved the atmosphere and the sparing use of color.

The plot was mundane and very cliche, and while I think that goes with the territory it was still a bit of a letdown.

The Mickey Rourke scenes were great, edgy and funny, IMO he stole the show. 'Nice jacket'.

The Bruce Willis scenes were also pretty good, especially with Jessica (WOW!).

Clive Owen's scenes... well... they were in the movie. Bleh.

Overall worth seeing, and one that I think benefits from the big screen. Some movies are just as good when you watch them on video, I don't think that'll be the case with this one, the visuals are an important part of why the movie is good.

Agreed. So is the plot to most graphic novels, though, so I didn't mind.

Timber Loftis 04-04-2005 12:39 PM

And who knew Frodo could be so frikkin creepy?

seriously, his character was great. I wasn't sure he'd be able to pull it off at first, but he did a pretty decent job.

Balintherlas 04-04-2005 09:32 PM

How did hardigan get that scar on his forehead?

And, how exactly was it that Elijah ate souls?? And the priest, how did he participate, and what was the point??? All very unclear. At least in Pulp Fiction, I figured out what the band-aid on Marcellus Wallace's neck was and what the glowing stuff in the briefcase was. Here in this movie I do have unanswered questions.

If the plot had been more on the level of other movies, I guess I'd care more. However, I just saw the plot here as a vehicle for the art and imagery. I'm okay with that, mind you.

 The contents of the briefcase are never disclosed, and it's a huge topic of debate among fans.

Timber Loftis 04-05-2005 11:04 AM

Not to switch topics, but I'm comfortable with my knowledge of what's in the briefcase. ;) PM me or start a topic.

Ilander 04-05-2005 12:40 PM

Great movie. I really can't say more, because that's all my mind registers on the subject.

Go see it. Now.

krunchyfrogg 04-05-2005 05:58 PM

I went back and dug up my graphic novel. I could only find Marv's story, but it's amazing: The movie is almost word for word what was in the graphic novel. A whole lot of the scenes look exactly like they did in the movie.

I appreciate it even more now, and I can't wait to see Sin City again! I'm looking forward to an extended DVD version also, because I read about scenes that were filmed but didn't make it into the theaters (the movie is over two hours long!).

Luvian 04-08-2005 10:46 AM

I just saw it, it was extremly messed up.

I think it would have worked better if they had said from the start that it was going to be 3 unrelated stories, because some people in the theater got confused.

The visuals were awesome, there was much violence and nudity. It's a really "dark" vision of our world.

TheGrandSlayer 04-08-2005 11:22 AM

I saw it, it was a good movie, but way to much ball busting (Literally!) for my liking, Marv was awsome, and Elijah was just plain old crazy. And the one cop, uhhhh, the ex-husband of the barmaid, the car scenes with him were hilarious.

Sir Degrader 04-10-2005 09:39 PM

Damn good movie, felt like an anime at times, very slick and presetable. I didn't get Josh Hartnett's character though. What was his role in the story?

krunchyfrogg 04-11-2005 12:45 AM

He's a hitman.

Sir Degrader 04-12-2005 10:13 PM

So? Does he have a point? I heard somewhere that he's the "short" that inspired Miller to let Robert make the movie. Is this true?

Azred 04-14-2005 12:28 AM

I believe he is in there simply to help set the tone of the movie. She (the lady in the first vignette) pays him to kill her, so she must have been really afraid of something or someone.

Jorath Calar 05-19-2005 09:09 PM

Finally saw it (hate when great movies come out late here) and all I can say is WOW!!!

I mean even Mickey Rourke was good in it, I used to think that guy was the bottom of the bad actors barrel.

But the film is just so good, probably best film I seen this decade...

Star Wars got a lot to live up to tomorrow... :D

Djinn Raffo 05-20-2005 02:09 AM

Booooring.

Jorath Calar 05-20-2005 04:25 PM

Who? me? thanks :(

You're not boring Jorath, but if that's the best movie you've seen in a decade... you need to get out more! ;)

Sir Degrader 05-22-2005 01:20 PM

No offense, but he's right. ROTS is superior IMO.

Seems like you've got a new obsession going on, Sir D? After every possible vs. fight you've gone to Revenge of the Sith overnight

Barry the Sprout 06-16-2005 02:13 PM

Should anyone be interested I reviewed this for a socialist paper I occasionally write for. It's available here:

http://www.workersliberty.org/node/view/4284

I know this is a long, long, time after the film coming out in America. But its only been out here for a few weeks. You can add comments on the website should you wish.

armageddon272 06-16-2005 03:05 PM

Yeah, I saw it a while ago. People started calling me wierd afterwards just because I liked (now why would they do that?).

What I love about this movie, is that the list of things it has that every good movie needs:

Unique
Funny (part with the midget)
Midgets
Explosions
Bloody
Killing (duh)
Hookers
Samurais/Katanas (I remember someone looking in awe when I described one scene that contained the "Katana wielding Japanese Samurai Hooker", something that you can't say about any other movies)
And even a bit of comedy.

Intrepid 07-30-2005 08:32 AM

It came out about a month ago here, maybe earlier but I was busy and didn’t make it till this week. Anyway, the first week it was released, two people were having the argument about whether it was good or not outside a cinema after having seen it, and it turned into a fight… which ended in the person who was saying it was rubbish getting the end of his nose bitten off.
At first I was pretty startled by that, but having see the film, the guy that bit it off did the right thing.

Luvian; not all movies shouldn't be written for idiots, there are comedies and such out there for that kind of thing. If some people in the cinema didn't follow the storyline it's their problem .

Thoran; what movie was better this decade?

Sir Degrader; no. I’ll admit I did see it twice, but still no.

As I said, I only just saw the film recently and wow!!
It was all the best bits of Pulp Fiction and Kill Bill, it reminded me of Max Payne the computer game in parts, of Fight Club of so many good movies. So many films, all building to this, I am seriously doubtful that this movie will be topped any time soon.
It was so near perfect, I loved every minute, every frame, each a masterpiece, just amazing.
I’m seeing it again tomorrow.

Link 07-31-2005 05:05 PM

Saw this just a few days ago, and it was pretty good. Not anywhere near my top favorite movies, but entertaining altogether.

I thought the violence was well masked by the comical view of the movie, but all in all there were some pretty gruesome scenes. The 'pez dispenser' was open to imagination, but I thought the scenes in the car with Benedicio del Toro and Clive Owen were pretty high on the "eeeeww" factor (close to being hilarious though).

The three stories were a bit hard to follow due to the entangling storylines, but I admit I was not paying too much attention to it all, so maybe it was just me.

Over the last decade there's been hundreds of better movies... but for the sake of brevity I'll look at the dvd's I've got on the local drive of this machine waiting to get copied to my server.

A Man Apart - S.C. was a LOT better
Aviator - A LOT better than S.C.
Blade Trinity - S.C. was better
Constantine - S.C. was a bit better
Darkest Knight - S.C. was INFINITELY better (damn that movie sucked)
Finding Nemo - A LOT better than S.C.
Luther - Better than S.C.
National Treasure - About as good
Pirates of the Carribian - A LOT better than S.C.
Primer - About as good
Suspect Zero - About as good
White Noise - About as good

Basically I thought S.C. was an OK movie, not bad, not great. It had some very cool things about it... but they were offset by some major weaknesses. I put it in the same category as movies that were too flawed to consider great but entertaining enough to put themselves ahead of the majority of crapola that Hollywood puts out. In other words - solidly Mediocre - which is well above average for Hollywood these days.
