Can someone PLEASE explain the lyrics of this song? I'm young and angry, but not dissafected, so I have a hard time understanding what this is about.

Just for reference...
Smells Like Teen Spirit Lyrics Load up on guns and Bring your friends It's fun to lose And to pretend She's over bored And self assured Oh no, I know A dirty word hello, how low? [x bunch of times] With the lights out it's less dangerous Here we are now Entertain us I feel stupid and contagious Here we are now Entertain us A mulatto An albino A mosquito My Libido Yeah I'm worse at what I do best And for this gift I feel blessed Our little group has always been And always will until the end hello, how low? [x bunch of times] With the lights out it's less dangerous Here we are now Entertain us I feel stupid and contagious Here we are now Entertain us A mulatto An albino A mosquito My Libido Yeah And I forget Just why I taste Oh yeah, I guess it makes me smile I found it hard It was hard to find Oh well, whatever, nevermind hello, how low? [x bunch of times] With the lights out it's less dangerous Here we are now Entertain us I feel stupid and contagious Here we are now Entertain us A mulatto An albino A mosquito My Libido Yeah, a denial A denial A denial... |
See what I mean? How the hell can anyone hope to understand this random gibberish!?
|
once you know the lyrics you can hear them...
then again you could hear almost every lyric you want in his mumbling, ;) |
Kurt Cobain even stated that the lyrics were gibberish. He was laughing during an interview that people were making it a hit and he was essentially singing about nothing.

Proof that a good chorus and good guitar riff can make any Rock song, forget the lyrics. :D
------------------ Also why do members keep thinking that we're supposed to discuss music stuff in here? Ziroc said music discussion belongs in General discussion as much as it does here. [ 01-09-2005, 05:12 AM: Message edited by: Sigmar ] |
I think that's a big part of the reason I don't like the new music. It's just a bunch of words stuck together. There's very little, or no meaning anymore.
|
"We all live in a yellow submarine"
"Take me down to paradise city where the grass is green and girls are pretty" "Don't step on my blue suede shoes" "We will, we will rock you" etc Music doesn't need to make sense, it needs to sound good. [ 01-09-2005, 08:44 AM: Message edited by: Sigmar ] |
Vengaboys, you know, the song where they stole the "Yo! Going to Barbedos..."-tune. People in Poland were singing it and not because it was so inspiring, but because the tune was so easy that everyone understood it. That's the winning formula of popmusic and that's why non-popmusic is only for the few who like it. I mean, non-pop music is exactly that: not popular with the majority of the commercial crowd.
And as for Nirvana, offcourse it's about nothing. But that was the point, that was the anger we kids had back then. The world was deteriorating into a materialistic one and we didn't like it one bit. Then suddenly Nirvana breaks in, names a song after a deodorant, jamming on the guitar with a voice that sounds like a distorted chainsaw from hell and YEAH! We had something that concurred with our anger, our sense of being lost, getting in touch with the rebel inside you and letting it out! Dude, we were going places :D And when he finally pulled a Cobain on himself, he already made a deep impression on whatever it was they did. Nirvana never was about the what, it was about the how. Just my 2cts. [ 01-09-2005, 03:47 PM: Message edited by: Zuvio ] |
I vaguely remember it being "Going To Ibiza"and the other one was something like ..."party... something" i don't remember, anyway...
I thought it was just angryness. and words that went together, like "A mulatto An albino A mosquito My Libido" just similar words, but i did think it was something to do with television (from the entertainment bit and guns and lights out etc) or possibly music. Or maybe just a comment on society, maybe Cobain accidentally commented on something in his gibberish, or maybe it just sounds good (which it deffinatly does). |
Going to Ibiza is the remake of Going to Barbados.

Well, "Smells like Nirvana" is a better song anyway ;)
Oh, and "Teen Spirit" probably is just a miscellaneous rant about as many things as they can stick into the allotted time. Reference "This song is just six words long" by Weird Al. |
but that's 7 words...
and yes, smells like nirvana is a much better song. |

how does the lyrics in "new music" make any more sence then those in "old music" ever did? and whats your definition of "new music"? seems to me like you are just looking for a reason to put down everything new without ever hearing it :/ |

I also noticed that it was little use trying to get a reasonable argument about it going, but what the hell. It's complete bollocks to compare ALL lyrics that are "new" to all that aren't. First, your definition of "new" is probably no broader than "anything that isn't some stuffy old prog-rock band", second, there have been such widely divergent bands and lyrics in "old" and "new" times that to make any comparisons would be just as (in)valid as comparing anything written in the 19th century to any 20th century literature and third, even if all new music had crappy lyrics, there's plenty of old ones that do too, so a lyric's age says nothing about its quality either way. Anyway. Nice to see you Chao! Everything OK? Oh and Variol, disgracefully belated thanks for your PM! Been busy as heck, but thanks, and a good year to you as well. |
Personally, I thought that Vengaboys' Up&Down lyrics were awesome :D

Boom Boom Boom Boom (vid was great) all the way baybee

I always like Weird Al Yankovich lyrics better...
Smell Like Nirvana What is this song all about? Can’t figure any lyrics out How do the words to it go? I wish you’d tell me, I don’t know Don’t know, don’t know, don’t know, oh no Don’t know, don’t know, don’t know... Now I’m mumblin’ and I’m screamin’ And I don’t know what I’m singin’ Crank the volume, ears are bleedin’ I still don’t know what I’m singin’ We’re so loud and incoherent Boy, this oughta bug your parents Yeah It’s unintel-ligible I just can’t get it through my skull It’s hard to bargle nawdle zouss(? ) With all these marbles in my mouth Don’t know, don’t know, don’t know, oh no Don’t know, don’t know, don’t know... Well, we don’t sound like madonna Here we are now, we’re nirvana Sing distinctly? we don’t wanna Buy our album, we’re nirvana A garage band from seattle Well, it sure beats raising cattle Yeah And I forgot the next verse Oh well, I guess it pays to rehearse The lyric sheet’s so hard to find What are the words? oh, nevermind Don’t know, don’t know, don’t know, oh no Don’t know, don’t know, don’t know... Well, I’m yellin’ and we’re playin’ But I don’t know what I’m sayin’ What’s the message I’m conveyin’? Can you tell me what I’m sayin’? So have you got some idea? Didn’t think so -- well, I’ll see ya Sayonara, sayonara Ayonawa, odinawa Odinaya, yodinaya Yaddayadda, yaaahyaaah Ayaaaaaah! Apparantly there were others who had no idea what Kurt was singing either... :D |
The first part of the chorus does make some sense,
the lights out bit is reference to the saftey in anonimity that teenagers feel i feel stupid ITS contagious: a reference to feeling put down and not listened to, presumabley shared by those around him, here we are now enteratain us: the attitude of the young generation, instant gratifictaion, the vew that they are entilted to something just for being, it goes down hill from here.. |
Smells like OVERRATED as in Nirvana is one of the most OVERRATED bands ever
|
So you say...
