dplax 08-29-2004 08:58 AM

Since the old thread has disappeared I just started wondering whether it would be worth playing this game.

Note this is not a thread for quotes just for discussion on whether the game would have interest.

Jaradu 08-29-2004 09:47 AM

What happened to the old one? Did it just die?

dplax 08-29-2004 10:29 AM

Yes it did.

Ilander 08-29-2004 12:30 PM

I would like to play it, but honestly simply almost never knew the lyrics in the last few, which I figure is why people "googled" in the first place...which in turn, provoked a counter reaction among the quoters... :(

SecretMaster 08-30-2004 01:49 AM

I'm in. Hell, I am always in. I didn't respond to the last thread because I didn't know any answers, so why bother to post useless sh*t.

Grojlach 08-30-2004 03:51 AM

It doesn't work.
It would only work if we had a more extensive line-up of participating music buffs, but as it is now, it's too specialised (some people are most likely capable of discerning every single lyric of Linkin Park, Taproot, Staind, AFI or whatever these mediocre bands are called; but when it comes to the most well known Joy Division song, of a band whose musical legacy will outlive those of any of the aforementioned bands blindfolded, it's suddenly too difficult (?) for them. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...ons/icon37.gif
But seriously, taste around here differs too much to have a "healthy" competition - lyrics posted by me for example are usually guessed by Melusine, Barry, Hierophant or dplax, while lyrics posted by Shadowhound or Bozos attract a wholly different audience. Not taking the odd cheater into account, there's little interaction between such subgroups in this topic (apart from "I don't know, give us a clue") - so when the few posters with a similar taste don't know the answer (or are offline for a few days), no one else will figure it out, either.
So sure, we can give it another shot, I may even participate. I'm afraid it will only take a few days before we have yet another status quo, though.

@Grojlach: To counteract the problem we could have several quotes running at the same time for the different groups. Would it work?

Xen 08-30-2004 07:45 AM

Well I promise that I won`t Google every lyrics wich is posted. I will use Google only if I really don`t know the lyrics.

Gnarf 08-30-2004 08:19 AM

... and AlltheWeb for the rest of'em, or..?

You can google all you want, just don't post any answers you've found with search engines - especially not if you haven't even heard the song (or anything the band has ever made, for that matter).

Melusine 08-30-2004 08:57 AM

I think no one should use Google or anything else to look up lyrics, period. But Xen has proven time and again that he is incapable of that. So in that respect I doubt a new thread would be much fun. Grojlach has a good point too, although I am not as forbiddingly elitist when it comes to types of music. ;) Nevertheless it is true that there may not be enough people of every musical taste participating to make it possible for all quotes to be guessed within reasonable time. And I don't think it would be fun to have seperate threads or strands within a thread for guessing metal/rap/indie/pop/etc quotes.

Still, if there is a new thread I would participate, but it would probably boil down to the same small group of people answering, and the threads going slow. That doesn't have to be a problem if all participants bookmarked it and exercised some patience with regard to posting of new quotes... and we could also make a rule that when a quote proves too difficult, the one who posted it should provide a new quote after say two days have elapsed. And we could all try to choose a bit more mainstream lyrics, although of course that is a bit of a subjective grey area as well.

So what about a new thread with several (let's say four) quotes running at a time and after a certain time if a question isn't answered then whoever asked it should ask a new one?

SecretMaster 08-30-2004 12:03 PM

Don't look at me, I listen to classic rock so I know pretty much anything old. However, it is the new stuff I suck at unless I've heard it on the radio or if it is System of a Down.

I also hate the googleage usage here. I mean, only if it has been unheard of, then use google. But most can be answered.

Bit of a risky statement there... ;)

RoSs_bg2_rox 08-30-2004 12:53 PM

That it is SecretMaster.

Well, Im in the same boat as the rest of 'em, I can only guess if I know the answer! I don't like to google, because that spoils the point in the game, it's not called, the fastest googler! And Xen, we all know you use google, I think someone should have your big mistake in their sig, that truly was a classic!

So, I would be in for a new game, but why not refine the game to a certain genre, or sub genre. That way it would work better, with more people taking part, and if others wanted to play with a different Genre, then they could start up their own thread. Personally I think that is the only way forward because, as has already been pointed out, different people have different tastes in music.

Ilander 08-30-2004 01:37 PM

So what has been proposed? Multiple quotes, timeouts, and a general good attitude?

We need to post that CLEARLY at the top of the next one, when/if it is started...plus all the traditional, anti-googling stuff

Yeah I used google. But I said myself that I will not use google anymore just to post the answer but only to learn who the singer/group is.

I`m sorry but I don`t quite understand this one.

Timber Loftis 08-30-2004 05:57 PM

Well, I come over here to test my knowledge and all I get is a steenkin debate.

The Hierophant 08-30-2004 11:09 PM

Well, if you guys really want to play these sorts of trivia games then come to the Miscellaneous Game forum and join the Game Trivia thread. We only have about 6 or 7 consistantly-participating players right now, we need more input guys! :D

Aerich 08-30-2004 11:31 PM

Well, I'd play (lyrics and games) if I knew any answers. I've looked at both of them before, and was shut out in both cases.

I could deal with having it narrowed down to one (or a few) genres - I need a hint or a direction. I'm not good at pulling things out of the ether.

I don't play nearly enough games to be a worthy competitor. Haven't finished a single game in at least two years, either... Hardly played any, for that matter. Makes you wonder what the heck I'm doing here, spending my time at a games forum. ;)

Same here, sorry Hiero.
As for the people who would like to participate in the Song Quotes thread but never have because they didn't know any of the quotes posted so far.. well if it is a genre problem I'm all for giving them a chance to post a "free" quote of their own and see if we can get it. The more people participating, the better. Say Aerich, SecretMaster and Timber each post a new quote as a sort of welcome (back) gift.... ;)

Bad idea? Good idea? I wouldn't mind personally if it means more people can join!

Terrible, terrible idea That's like giving out prizes for sucking the hardest.... mmmmm, actually, yeah, sucking hard is quite prizeworthy, in the right context.....

Melusine 08-31-2004 06:02 AM

Haha. But you're wrong

It has nothing to do with sucking (shut up - I can think of all the greasy puns you could make myself, thank you)(AND I think I'll take that prize.. thank you ) but with the fact that almost all quotes that were posted in the last couple of threads were from modern metal or indie bands. And if they simply don't listen to that type of music, how are they ever going to be able to participate?

By broadening their music taste dear

And as for the prize-giving, well, I'll have to put your through a rigorous judging process first of course. If you train hard, and put in an exceptional effort on the day, you might just make the grade ;)

edit: No, wait, how presumptuous of me! All of us here at IW will have to put you to the test, in order to judge whether your degree of suction truly is the hardest! Although I've got dibs on 'judging' you first!!! :D

Sure honey, dream on.
Ah well, I'll send you my credentials and references then, I think you'll find I'm the only suitable candidate for this award.

BTW I disagree with you, still. Being forced to listen to metal is not a broadening of taste. But all right, why don't we broaden our own tastes and post something different for once? I know I will try, I've guessed two of the new quotes.
All I'm saying is we should encourage new people joining. And Xen got lots of "free" quotes because he used Google all the time - I think it pleads for SecretMaster and Aerich that they never have.

The Hierophant 08-31-2004 06:35 AM

*sigh* Look, Sarah, one of these days you're just going to have to swallow that bitter little pill and just agree with me unconditionally. None of this 'self-determination' stuff.... just complete and utter concurrence... it is unavoidable, it is your destiny.

Fine, throw them their consolation prizes! They can all rejoice and celebrate their ignorance should they be spineless enough to accept them! :D
