What's you favourite monster???

I love(you know what I mean) Kobolds and Ogers... and... how do you call the little ones? the blue guys who alwais scream "attaaaack!!!" well those ones!!! They're so fun to kill! just use some *mass-destruction* like firebolt!!!
Also bandits are cool to kill!!!

Ilander 01-10-2005 01:54 PM

The "little blue guys" would be "Xvarts" I believe ;) ...

I think my favorite monster would have to be the Ogrillion...it has the best battle soundset, ever...

"You mess with me, you mess with YOU"

Marty4 01-10-2005 03:14 PM

Xvarts are funny. I call them "farts" :D

I also like ankehgs, simply for experience, unique fights, and nice armor. Also, their incredible slow ranged attack is funny to watch; I once had Imoen equip boots of speed and haste herself, get "hit" by an attack, and was able to run to the opposite side of the map with the goo folowing her, then U-turn and get to the other side. Of course, I had to leave the area to avoid being chunked by it ;)

pritchke 01-10-2005 03:25 PM

The Basilisk. It is fun to hunt them for experience and they are impressive beast. Definitely the most rewarding creature.

the exvarts are cool, i reckon the flesh golems are cool, but the best of all are innocet people, har har! nah i reckon the best monstedrs to kill are the ogres, they look cool

SixOfSpades 01-10-2005 06:57 PM

I love the look of the Ogre-Magi. Too bad they're such crappy fighters, they look kickass with that armor and Katana.

Brainless One 01-10-2005 08:44 PM

I like to fight Battle Horrors. They are a tough fight when soloing and even for lower level parties. I always feel like I actually deserved the whopping 2,000 XP for killing them, unlike weaker creatures like basilisks.

Halbarad1891 01-10-2005 09:05 PM

All the little things annoy me... Xvarts, Gibberlings, Tolsoi, Kobolds... grrr By the time they show up in large enough groups to be a fun fight, my party is powerful enough to walk over them (and I do mean walk, the longest part of the battle is looting the bodies).

I've always been a fan of Wolves and Bears (and their relations). A hard fight at the lower levels, and a fun romp at the mid/high levels.

I like "humans" the best though, those battles are always the most difficult and most enjoyable.

Mustard jellies.

Azred 01-11-2005 10:06 PM

I really enjoy the basilisk, because they are a source of such easy xp. However, I do enjoy the blink dogs because they teleport (and are friendlier than phase spiders).

Brainless One 01-11-2005 11:40 PM

Where are blink dogs? I have seen many posts about them, but have never actually encountered them... and just when I thought I had completed everything in BG1...
-Brainless One

Armen 01-12-2005 05:58 AM

wyverns - they're the biggest thing you fight in BG1

i remember the first time i got ambushed by them in <that place where they are> and being genuinely surprised by them - and also getting unceremonially battered before running away

Bernardo 01-12-2005 08:41 AM

(might be spoiler... very small)

I love the huge one (wyvern) you meet in some point in the game!!! I don't remember where...

Where is the Xvart's principal... "City"? the place where you find your self against LOTS of them?

What's your FAVOURITE???

Brainless One 01-12-2005 05:36 PM

If you look up to towards the top of the page, Pritchke's favorites are basilisks. And the place where you fight many many xvarts (and a cave bear too) is about two maps north of the Gnoll Stronghold and a map to the east. The lower half of the map is pretty much empty.
-Brainless One

Illumina Drathiran'ar 01-12-2005 05:47 PM

I LOVE that map, almost as much as I love throwing fireballs at the lot of them.

Sometimes, when I'm in a sadistic mood, I'll CLUA them into SoA and kill them by the hundreds.

Sometimes they will be a random encounter in the wilderness or in some of those "you have been waylaid by enemies..." attacks. They are also found in a set encounter in the Counting House in Baldur's Gate (at least I think they are there).

Hmm...thanks for the info, I have played through this game numerous times and have yet to encounter them... is the counting house the place where you get the sea charts? I didn't recall finding anything there but piratey warriors... oh well.

In nashkell in front of the temple where the graves are there is one particular grave that if you click on it some mage dude appears and gives you a warning

if you click it and make him appear like 3 times he summons these humanoids giants that when you finally kill one their bodies explode causing them to make a fireball like spell hurting your party. dont know if any of you guys have come across this

Many of us have, and there are simple ways to defeat them with minimal effort. Certain 'fire protection' items/spells work very nicely

True roleplayers would have a far more difficult time against them though.

Black Robed One 02-05-2005 04:10 AM

My favorite monsters… Mmm… Do various “named” guys count? Actually, I rather enjoy wiping out various bounty hunters and then read their notes to see how the price on my head grew! It really makes me feel special!

Among “nameless” monsters, my favorites are Battle Horrors and similar artificial warriors. They are tough, but that’s what makes them challenging (especially in a certain house in Baldur’s Gate, which is filled by such creatures), and of course, the fact that they have a huge experience rewards (the “weakest” ones are worth 2000 experience each!) on their heads makes fighting them worth the effort!

P.S.
I am a true role-player (at least, I like to think of myself as one; even if I DO have slight tendencies towards munchkinism when it comes to CRPGs), and I indeed never managed to wipe out Phoenix Guards... http://www.clicksmilies.com/s0105/tr...smiley-017.gif

Blink Dogs are probably part of the DSoTSC. I don't recognize them.

Basiliks are awesome for XP, especially the area with Shar-Teel and Korax where you can kill loads of them.

My favourite person to kill would be...Greywolf. His status as a strong bounty hunter just makes it more exciting to kill him. Plus he has a great sword

Blink dogs are found in TotSC in that building in NE Baldurs GAte that is changed by the expansion.

I never encountered this Greywolf fellow (although I've been mistaken for him whenever I visited Nashkel for the first time... no matter whether I am man or woman). Could you please tell me where he is, Lord (I am usually not found of spoilers, but I just don't have time or desire to look through entire region in search for this Greywolf... he just isn't worth it, I am sure of it)?

Is in the area outside nashkel mines (i.e. the wilderness area from which you enter Nashkel mines).
To make him appear you have to agree to protect Prism.

Thanks, ZFR! I guess I'll check him soon... And I just happened to have one of my parties saved in this area!

Black Robed One 02-10-2005 10:25 AM

But the way, I've killed Greywolf with one of my parties a couple of days ago; he wasn't an easy kill for a low-level party, although eventually, the continuing blows fell him... And thus, the mighty bounty hunter has fallen! The true power is indeed in numbers!

P.S.

Once again, thank you for your help, ZFR!

I like the hobgoblins. They have cool sound sets, there is a variety of tough they are, and they look cool. Occasionally they even have good items (a short sword?)

Neomi 02-11-2005 05:00 PM

I've always liked xvarts (those little annoying blue guys). "Ataaaaack!" heh.

By the time I get to the xvart village my fighters are usually pretty high level, so the whole scene is one of major carnage with plenty of chunkification...

Never liked hobgoblins myself, by the way. The ordinary ones aren’t especially tough, not even for a low-level party, but the hobgoblin elite use poisoned arrows (which mysteriously transform into ordinary arrows once you loot their bodies), and the fight with a large number of the hobgoblin elite could be troublesome indeed; unless all you party members have a very good AC and/or you have some offensive area spells (like Fireball or Skull Trap) in your disposal.

P.S.

A certain named hobgoblins indeed have some very nice magic items on them, though, most notably Boots of Stealth, +2 Short Sword, and Bow of Marksmanship.

Arledrian 02-13-2005 01:16 PM

I love basilisks, sirenes, and flesh golems. They're all a challenge to kill, and very rewarding in terms of experience.

Illumina Drathiran'ar 02-13-2005 04:14 PM

You know, I'm going to have to agree... Sirines are my favorite.

Anyone who thought mustard jellies really were my favorite hasn't been paying attention.

Orbost 02-14-2005 07:25 PM

Ogre Berserkers are pretty cool. When my party was low level they were real tough, and it was a big accomplishment when I killed my first one!

Oh, and the bandits at the Bandit Camp have a great sound set - they sound like Californian beach bums!

I think of the sirenes too, because they were the first enemy that I got to that gave me a hard time, I'd always end up with my fighter chasing my other characters all around.

Damn those Sirenes with their Dire Charms! And they always get their spells off before I can turn them into pincushions...

thanks, sir! I registered because I am playing through wizardry 8 right now, but I also play BG1 and 2 and Morrowind, so these boards are perfect.

talking about the xvarts, I did always love the "attaaaack!!!!" sound :D I had a game where my PC was a human fighter, and she was slaughtering those Xvarts like mad at the village. The last Xvart got scared and started running, and my PC switched to throwing knife and gibbed the fleeing Xvart with one shot....looked pretty wicked :D
