I'm reading up on TTT before i go see the movie and am seeking a spoiler of sorts. Is there a scene that depicts the only worthy duel in the entire LotR trilogy? That being the battle of Gandalf and the Balrog at the peak of Zirakzigil.

Or does Gandalf remain tight lipped?

Rokenn 01-02-2003 12:37 PM

Yes, no.

In the book there isn't much said, the scene in the movie shows it better than the book describes it..I think.

All in all it was a great part of the movie
I think the Scene with Gandalf contesting Sauruman for the will of Theodin was a nice addition. I would have liked to see more of that particular contest at Isengard...but ...they didn't film that part. :(

and an awesome scene it was!

Sever 01-03-2003 04:19 AM

Excellent. That sounds like the only bit in the movie that may be better than the book. Can't wait to see it.

Larry_OHF 01-03-2003 09:15 AM

Yeah man! That part, interestingly at the beginning of the movie, had me wanting to stand up in my chair and shout prasies to Peter Jackson! I promise that I did not even blink once during the whole dang part!

Tancred 01-03-2003 08:58 PM

It got me remembering, and it got me right back into the action from the first few minutes. It's almost made for those who always complained that the fall of the Balrog was the biggest cop-out ever in the history of much-anticipated fight scenes. It's excellent.

Tanc - I wanna see it again now!

Wulfere 01-03-2003 11:29 PM

Gandalf will not contest with Saruman until the next movie. Shelob will also be in the next movie. The battle with the Balrog takes place at the very begining of The Two Towers. This was my favorite book of the series and they did a great job with it. I have seen it twice and both times I thought..."Wait! 3 hours isn't up yet!"

What was Tolkein thinking though?! How could he kill off ALL of the Balrogs! Its just not fair, they are cool. The Balrogs should live I tell you!! Long live the Valaraukar!!!

It was a great scene

It was pretty over the top though how Gandalf didn't smash into the rocks as he was falling.

They didn't have everyone go to Isengard so they could empisise Saruman being a dimwad and sending his entire army to Helms Deep, costing him many orcs and having lost all of Isengard to the ents it also shows how kick butt the ents were :D

Absofreakinlutely. They are the coolest (misnomer?) bad guys ever. Responsible for more elf-hero slayings than any other creature. I think Tolkien had to tone them down because after the first age, elves and men turned into whining pussies. It would've been a pretty one-sided affair otherwise.

LOL, there were only seven, at the most, and that was the last of them. Bye-bye, Balrogs!

Much more than that... and the Balrog of Moria is by no means the last. A few escaped and hid... with any luck, no-one's going to be fool enough to wake them.

Sever 01-06-2003 12:27 AM

Seven? In the Ages of Darkness there are armies of them. Most are vanquished in the War of Powers and the destruction of Utunmo. In the open ended manner Tolkien often chose to end his schemes, it can be summised that more than a handful of Balrogs escaped to the deeps of the earth or roamed to areas where his stories do not go.

DarkAngel 01-06-2003 08:38 AM

balrogs are cool, but my favourite character in his books is turin...long live him.

If I'm not mistaken Gandalf was a Maya, which was of the same order of beings that the Balrog came from. So they were pretty evenly matched. Plus Gandalf has a Ring of Power and a powerful elvish blade to use. I love the part where he uses Glamerding to call down and channel lightening into the Balrog at the end of the battle.

Given that I have no idea not PJ is going to top that opening in RotK, unless maybe with the expelling of Saruman by Gandalf.

Gandalf was indeed a Maiar spirit as were all of the istari, but in their descent to the mortal world they were restricted to the forms of men and could not use their godly powers to rise in might. The only thing that enabled him to stand against the Balrog was Narya, the ring of fire.

OT, Gandalf's sword Glamdring is mentioned in many places, but nowhere can i find info on how he came by it. Is it the sword of Turgon the Wise?

It was of the same vintage and cache of weapons that Sting came from. He aquired it from the troll horde in 'The Hobbit'. It was forged for the Goblin Wars by the elves, I do not think 'The Hobbit' gives a date on when they were forged.

Quoted by derekbessette, of the White Council forums:

In the Silmarillion, at the fall of Gondolin, Ecthelion, the elven Captain of the guards, slays Gothmog, Lord of the Balrogs. Glamdring, Orcrist, and Sting all were made in Gondolin. This leads me to presuppose that:

1. Ecthelion of the guards carried a Gondolin weapon.
2. Balrogs are vulnerable to Gondolin weapons (Gothmog dying).
3. Gandalf carried a Gondolin weapon, and fought a Balrog most certainly not as powerful as Gothmog.
4. Gandalf was a Maia, an angel, much more powerful than an elf-lord like Ecthelion.
