i just got back from seeing the movie signs. i didn't really want to see it but my family dragged me along. i'm glad i went, it was awesome! i highly recommend you all see it sometime. that's all i have to say.

It was better then I expected, too. My older sister and her son were huddled together through most of it and my son (3 years younger then her's) was barely scared except when the audience screamed. What made it so heart pounding was not really knowing what the aliens were there for.

I just watched Signs and while it wasn't too bad it certainly wasn't great but at least it was better than M.Night Shyamalan's last movie. Unbreakable was a real disappointment after The Sixth Sense.

i was sort of dissapointed in how the aliens were turned back so easily.. it took them so long to form an army and come over here by ship, that they only stayed for 1 battle and then left. no immediate attACK following the first or a second attack. i dont get what they meant by "HARVESTING THE HUMANS" at first i thought they were going to eat us but then i thought, we are made of what 80% of water? (wrong i know) that would instantly kill them. so what did they mean by that?

Good-natured critism ahead.
What my friends and I want to know is, who was the smartass alien who told his superiors to attack Earth? A planet whose surface is 70% water, and has high humidity in the atmosphere. "Oooo! The planet is called Earth, so it must a dry planet right? We are so technologically advanced, but let us not scan the planet for potentially harmful liquid substances that might melt us." Okay, okay. Maybe that was not how the conversation went, but good lord, whoever is their Intel is in deep doo-doo now. Despite this, we enjoyed the movie very much. |

Actually, me and my friends have a theory as to why they want humans. They need a species that is not adverse to water to work as slaves on extremely humid places.

I saw it with my mother, and we discussed it driving home. We, too, wondered what aliens with serious reactions to water would want with human bodies. I really enjoyed this movie. It took a while to develop, and I wasn't really sure what direction it would go in, but it was really worth it in the end. I can't wait to see it again. I've seen Sixth Sense four or five times. I really like that movie. I agree that Unbreakable was a disappointment. It had that same little twist at the end, but the whole thing just didn't work as well. |

The alien that was trying to poison Morgan had a grudge against Morgan's father who had chopped off the alien's finger in an earlier encounter. |
Maybe you're right. He was also left behind after his people had left, so he was pretty ticked off.
The term they used was harvesting though, not kidnapping. Generally, when you harvest something, you kill it and take the parts that you want. |
I do not really equate harvesting with killing. The idea of a farmer saying, "I am killing my crops." seems a tad extreme. I prefer to equate it with collecting.
Perhaps they see Earth as this giant farm, with replenishable slave-candidates. They harvest a 'few' humans now and then, let the species repopulate and come back for more. |
There's been other spoilers earlier in the thread, but just so you know...
S P O I L E R S B E L O W (hey, I can rhyme too) I enjoy deconstructing movies as much as the next guy, but you have to draw the line somewhere. This was not a movie about an alien invasion. This was a movie about one man's quest for faith. It was about how he lost it, and how he regained it. You have to forgive some of the (big) plot holes dealing with the alien invasion and focus on the point of the story. That being said, I didn't really believe Gibson's reclamation of faith. I've only seen it once, but I found the whole "faith" part of the movie poorly done. I may be missing something big (which is why I want to see it again) but how exactly did the death of his son make him believe in God? Was it all to do with what his wife said when she died? ("See," and "Swing away?") Not enough for me. Now don't get me wrong. I really liked the movie. I don't think he'll ever better than Sixth Sense, but Lucas can't top Episode 4 and 5, Rick Moranis can't top Strange Brew, and the Zuckers and Abram's can't top Airplane. But the thing is, even a second rate M. Night Sh(something) film is a lot better than most of the schlock put out these days. The cinematography in Signs was great, as was the directing (camera movement and framing esp.) The acting was very good, especially the children and Joaquin Phoenix. All this and the pacing made for a very tense and exciting movie. I give it a thumbs up, even if it did disappoint in the areas of Alien logic/strategy and main character motivation. |
His son did not die. Listen to what he says outside the farm.
[Paraphrased] "He couldn't breathe in the poison, he couldn't breathe in the poison, etc... ..." [/Paraphrased] Things happen for a reason, that was what the movie was trying to say. He thought the his son's asthma attack was unfair, but it turned out to be a blessing in disguise. Hee, hee... just because I nitpicked on the alien invasion part, does not mean I was not paying attention to the main plot of the movie. ;) I love the movie. |
