anyone around who likes reading Stephen King ? I read all his books (except the last ones, but that's just a matter of time). I simply love those creepy stories. Btw, Dean Koontz is also one of my favorites.

Hey Johnny!Haven`t read S.K yet but have seen many of his movies. What should I start with?

his best book imo was it, so i would start with that one. If you saw the movie it's still good enough to read because they left a lot out of it. Have fun. ( other good options are desperation and insomnia, especially desperation is pretty scary )

Pippin 05-21-2002 02:30 AM

Thanx pal!I`ll try em out!

MILAMBER 05-21-2002 03:24 PM

yep, they're pretty cool too, but then again, i love em all.

Redblueflare 05-21-2002 06:54 PM

A friend was telling me his book Firestarter (I forget the name) was pretty good. I think it's cool that he thinks up a lot of his stories in his dreams. (And kinda creepy too!)

Epona 05-21-2002 07:15 PM

I love King - one of my favourite horror writers.

I would reccommend:

It
The Stand (uncut edition if you can get it)
Christine (because I have a thing for vintage Plymouths LOL)
Firestarter
The Dead Zone

These are my personal favourites, I would advise to avoid the later books to start with, IMO they're not as good as the older ones.

Other horror writers I like and would reccommend:
Stephen Laws, Christopher Fowler, James Herbert (some of his stuff is crap, but I like Magic Cottage, Moon, Portend, Haunted)

johnny 05-21-2002 07:29 PM

epona, did you mean that big book ( the stand ) with over a thousand pages ? I once was at the break of buying it, but since i already read it i didn't because it was pretty expensive.

That's the one! The original release was only about 2/3 of the whole thing due to publishing expenses. It really is worth getting the uncut edition - the plot is still the same, but the extra material fills in a lot of background and makes the story that much richer.

johnny 05-22-2002 03:27 PM

hmm, maybe i'll reconsidder, btw i couldn't get to the forum the entire day until just now, was i the only one with this problem ?

Gazza 05-22-2002 11:06 PM

I've read the "uncut" version of The Stand. What a fantastic book. I recommend everyone read it whether your a King fan or not.

johnny 05-23-2002 10:55 AM

okay people, i'm convinced. Next time i go to a bookshop, i will buy the uncutt version. Don't wanna miss a thing when it comes from king. lol

I highly recommend both It and The Stand. Both are great!

i know, i've read em. Did you by any chance read desperation ? Cause if you didn't, you definitly should, it's one of his creepiest stories if you ask me. And afterwards (if you liked it) you should read the regulators, it's kinda related to desperation, not a sequel or anything, but you'll understand once you've read em.

I may just take your advice though, while I'm waiting for WoT 10!!!

Did anyone find the shining scary? I read it and it was boring perhaps playing games has dulled my being scared or something but it was so boring. Yawn. Anyway are the others better?

King rules! He is one of the few writers whose books really "drag me in". Once I start reading I can't put it down ;)
Anyway my favourites are:

IT
The Stand
Insomnia
Bag of bones
The Green Mile (loved the book, hated the movie BTW)
Pet Sematary
Cujo

But as you say, any of his books are great ;)

yeah, there will always be books that don't get to as much as you hoped they would. I have the shining myself, but i never read it, because i must have seen the movie a dozen times.

Tomas Darknite 06-21-2002 09:51 PM

The Talisiman
The Stand (un-cut version)
IT
Needful Things (the best movie adaption)
The Green Mile (2nd best movie adaption)
The Dead Zone
Salems Lot (the 3rd best movie adaption)
Desperation
The Regulators
and the Dark Tower Books
I'm reading Black House now (sequel to The Talisiman) so far standard King stuff (fantastic)

Have any of you read the Bachman books? This is a collection of his stories under the pen name Bachman before he could get published as Stephen King. Also wondering in Black house did he co write with peter schuab again as he did in the tailisman?

Sageridder,
Yes he co-wrote with Straub and the Bachman books are great. He actually wrote one recently titled "The Regulators"

I like both King and Koontz.

Haven't read any of their works in years but I'd recommend all the old King to anyone who likes freaky sotries and having books scare the bejesus out of them :D

The original Stand (released 1979) was fantastic as was Salem's Lot (as reading material, not movies). I think King got a little stranger after all his books started turning into movies and afterwards, I didn't find his writing that appealing.
One of my favs was the book full of short stories that were later developed into novels but I forget the title. :( Its been ages.
