A while back, I saw the movie , Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. I believe some of us were talking about that movie, and how glad we were that it was subtitled into English and not dubbed.
Wel...another fantastic movie will be released in October, I beleive, called Iron Monkey. It has actually been out since 1993, but the U.S. is just now getting it. Must be because of the success of the previous mentioned. If anyone wants to see a Quicktime trailer of it...here is the link.Iron Monkey

I really like this movie, but I don't think it will be as exceiting as Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. That little girl could kick some serious arse! But...this one is supposed to be just as thrilling, as you will see in the trailer.

Another movie that is right up there in action is called Zu Warriors. It is a mix of Martial art and apparently magic. It deals with Godly powers and dark evil creatures against mortality and all. Kinda feels like Mortal Combat. Anyway, the trailer for it is available in Windows Media or Quicktime. It is here. Zu Warriors

So...who likes butt-kicking martial arts stuff?

The director of both Zu and Monkey also did Matrix and Crouching

I've just this minute finished watching Twin brothers with Jet li, it was very good and very similar too crouching tiger according to my friend(I haven't watched it my self yet so I cannot judge).

As for your question I love martial arts films, I guess they bring back memories of me and my cousin beating the crap out of each other in the backyard when we were kids lol

Enter the Dragon is the best IMO. Bruce Lee owns them all

I love martial arts movies!
They're just so very entertaining, but only the asian ones of course..
The non-asian ones tend to be very disappointing.
I've actually seen Iron MOnkey and can safely say that Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragon is much better..
Not just for the fighting-scenes but for the script too...

Oh, and the best martial arts movie, IMO, is "The Evil Cult" with Jet Li ;)

Would u classify "romeo must die" as martial arts? I liked that lots....

Sneeki Two 03-29-2002 01:29 AM

Lone Wolf and Cub is also very good. I am not sure if that is the name of this one (there are several of them I think). It has 2 ninja clans (one all males and one all females) hunting the Lone Wolf. It is very bloody but very good.

If you are into anime (japanese animation), I would check out Ninja Scrolls. This one doesn't disappoint.

Just my 2.

Good movie, especially the special effect that shows the bones being broken when the killing blow hits. Not enough action in my opinion, though.

Kiss of the Dragon (starring Jet Li) is also very good. I just saw it a couple of weeks ago.

The plot is stretched in some places, but the butt-kicking is plentiful and exciting....especially at the end.

Yeah Kiss of the Dragon is very good
The only thing I objected to was the way they had cut it, it was somewhat hard to keep up when they were fighting, but it had a great plot
I especially liked when Jet Li kicked a billiard ball oín a guys face.brilliant action :D

One of my favourites is Shaolin Temple 2 or (Kids from Shaolin) as it is also known. It stars Jet Li when he was younger (18 i think). What I like about the movie is the action is full on. I've noticed that the latest Martial Arts movies are more tame than they used to be.

I suppose the Jackie Chan movies are good, but they kinda come under Comedy/Action category

Of course! This movie was very very kewl and as Jonni Voodoo said the bone breaking effects were a nice touch.

Another excellent movie! It was kewl how they could fly; and the fight scenes were brilliant!

Oh yeah I don't know if its out yet anywhere else but there is this kewl "Shaolin Monk" exhibition kinda thing at this theatre in Sydney. It looks really kewl and I'm seeing it soon.

Only his ones made in the US...have you ever seen any of his older Hong Kong movies...pure class

I agree about Crouching Tiger/Hidden Dragon, because it was such a relief to see a martial arts film done artistically. Of course, other films that must be included in the "best" category: Drunken Master 2 from Jackie Chan (his other movies pale in comparison to this one), Enter the Dragon from Bruce Lee (altough I don't care too much for his whooping and hollering--too noisy), The Quest from Jean-Claude van Damme (ok, not a great movie but they do show many different styles in their true forms), and you must get the classics The Seven Samurai and Yojimbo from Korusawa.

How about swordplay movies? Any choices there? I place Princess Bride (Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya....), Mask of Zorro, and The Musketeer (the real film, not that Disney fluff that came out some years ago *ugh*) at the top of my list. Sorry, folks--Highlander just doesn't make my cut.

Yes of course! I was referring to the US ones..but they're all good. The autobirography (biography?) of Jackie Chan is a very good read! Highly recommended

Bahamut 04-05-2002 08:10 AM

Well the dubbing was good for Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon... but I prefer the subtitled version.. actually I got both... hehehe

I loved that movie because it had a great story line, and it wasn't just that... the scenes were nice, fighting scenes to, I laughed when Zhang Ziyi was fighting in the restaurant and when she is fighting Chow Yun Fat.

I liked Jet Li movies... especially those Once Upon A Time In China series ;)

I think the pride fighting championship and the UFC are much more fun to watch then floating people in crouching tiger hidden dragon.

Sneeki Two 04-13-2002 01:57 AM

Agree also on the UFC and pridefighting thing. It is cool to see many of the styles in actual practice.

Funny how wrestling (grappling) styles are way more effective than punch and kicking styles.

I still like a good Martial arts film though.

"Stormriders" is decent also. Its showing on Direct TV now. If you want to see what Dragonball Z looks like in live action, check this one out. Tons of special effects in it, and really powerful characters.

Just my 2.

caleb 04-13-2002 07:19 PM

It was even funnier to see a lanky little brazilian guy beat the crap out of a top ranked pro boxer BTW stormriders is on the showtime channel sometimes and it does rule.

I rented Enter the Dragon yesterday and I'm going to watch it today . Can't wait :D :D !

Grimslade 04-27-2002 08:32 AM

Enter the Dragon, Romeo Must Die, Kiss of the Dragon & Crouching Tiger are all very good.

My favourite asian martial arts film is probably Jackie Chan's The Young Master.

My favourite American martial arts film is definately Bloodsport. I also loved Rush Hour 2.

"Very good...but brick not hit back." Chong Li, Bloodsport.
