- - POLL: Best R.A Salvator Character (http://www.ironworksforum.com/forum/showthread.php?t=38938)

Any R.A Salvator Fans out there? Who is you favourite character that he has created?

Mine has to be Zaknafein, its just a pity he isn't in it longer.

I have just finished the dark elf trilogy and loved it. Next purchase the Icewind Dale Trilogy.

Larry_OHF 02-15-2002 11:45 PM

I agree, Zak was an interesting character.

I suppose that the only reason I like Drizzt is because of his challenges in his background, and how he came to be where he is today, as well as some impressive sword-fighting. His personality is lacking, IMO, as he alwaysseems so philisophical.
Anyway, I am not much of a dwarf lover, but Bruenar Battlehammer is a great character. He teaches me alot about dwarven thinking.

R.A Salvatore!!! the R.E. Howard of my generation!!!

Well drizzt is right up there!! But in Halfling's gem ( my favorite book of all time!!) :D there were so many memorable characters!!

Artemis Entreri is perhaps the only Human(yes no subraces or hybrids!!) that can fight the Noble drizzt at swords!!

Drizzt had his Two Scimitars and "Arty" had a regular joe sabre and dagger!!

Man he ranks right up there with Darth Vader!!! on the all time baddy list!!

Bongo & La Valle were excellent stooges as well!!!

Anyway time to finish my Demon Awakes novel.....Rangers are cool!!!

Akar Kessel 02-16-2002 08:53 PM

DRIZZT ALL THE WAY!!! He overcame so much prejudice and work

Daniel 02-16-2002 09:52 PM

Keep em coming in, I'd be interested in finding more Salvatore fans.

Warhammer 02-17-2002 07:05 AM

Cadderly, just because he is such an unorthodox priest (in a D&D world)

Davros 02-17-2002 07:11 AM

With a flourish and a bow he announces "JARLAXLE" :D .

YeRFDoG 02-17-2002 09:08 AM

Its unoriginal....... but i will go with Drizzt, followed by Jarlaxle :D

Daniel 02-17-2002 03:24 PM

I have a question, does Jarlaxle follow Drizzt to the surface in the later books? because he seemed to show such in interest in Drizzt(For the money obviously), but after house Do'Urdens destruction he just seemed to vanish, there was no more references to him at all!, and the way Salvatore spoke about him I was expecting a major enemy for Drizzt, but alas that moment never came.

Akar Kessel 02-17-2002 06:51 PM

i agree about Cadderly too

Crimson 02-18-2002 01:59 AM

i would say cattibrie i mean she trusted drizzt from the start and still does in the latest book by salvatore just released last month

Sir Byronas 02-18-2002 11:41 AM

Drizzt is the best of all!

Daniel 02-18-2002 05:54 PM

Don't bother answering my previous question I know now(I got the servant of the Shard today, and the Icewind dale trilogy as well Yippee!!!!!!!)

khazadman 02-23-2002 04:04 PM

its gotta be zak and jarlaxle.zak was just so good at what he does, and jarlaxle is just plain fun.and jarlaxle has some of the coolest items.

Artemis is one of my favs. I actually considered his skill better than Drizzt. He was only human (and not a super young one at that) and faired very well against Drizzt (who was a VERY extraordinary drow). Drizzt is the best fighter to come out of Menzo (though Jarlaxle would probably give him a good run for his money).

Also Artemis's weapons weren't ordinary. I know his dagger stole lifeforce and transferred it to the wielder (though Drizzt was really the only that could hit him). Also one of his weapons was supposedly a defender (from one of his early character stats).

Jarlaxle is another favorite now. Servant of Shard (if I remember correctly) really made him shine. I mentioned him being up to par with both Artemis and Drizzt, but he is way too smart to get caught up in a duel so equally matched.

I also like Danica from the Cleric Quintet. Its just cool to see a monk in action. Ivan and Pikel also deserve mention.

Drizzt is also neat but kinda boring. I thought he was best in the Darkelf trilogy. His goodiness was refreshing when compared to his family and surroundings.

Just my 2.

A bit of a toss-up between Jarlaxle, Artemis Entreri, and Wolfgur.
The later books have really made these characters shine in there own light, instead of being slaved to Drizzt.

Drizzt himself has become... stale. His character has not really expanded/grown for quite a while now.

I haven't heard much about the Cleric Quintet, any good?

Sneeki Two 02-27-2002 11:27 PM

To Daniel:
The Cleric Quintet is not quite as good as the Drizzt books but they were a nice diversion. If you have some extra time, I'd give them a try.

I also liked the Spelljammer series they did quite a while back(I think the first was "Into the Void"). I thought it was better than the Cleric Quintet. Not sure if they can be easily found though.

Just my 2.

I read a lot, I own all the Forgotten realm novels, and I think that all of R.A. Salvator's characters are interesting in their own right. But I think those characters really suck compared to the characters from Geoge R.R. Martin's "A Song of Ice and fire" series, Sara Douglass "Wayfarer Redemption" series and Robert Jordan's "Wheel of Time series" (By the time you get to the 9th book of a Wheel of Time, you become very attached to the characters.

Cerek the Barbaric 03-01-2002 09:51 AM

Drizzt is very impressive, but I also liked Wulfgar from the Icewind Dale trilogy

(OK, you did KNOW that I would choose the barbarian, didn't you?)

Another very neat character created by Salvatore is Oliver DeBurrows - a halfling duelist/thief in the Crimson Cape series. He is a truly entertaining character in several different respects.

Now that I have read the first 6 of the Drizzt books I would like to change my previous favourite from Zak to Bruenor, the dwarf has just grown on me, the guy has some of the best dialog pieces(well the funniest at least), and is an all round great character.

It's a worthy read - just don't expect to be reading about Drizz't et al...

You can also buy them in one Healthy Tome called the Cleric Quintet. Cost less, too...

AND to get back on topic - favorite char...hmmm....toss up between Danica (monk gf of Cadderly) and Cattiebrie. Just something about a strong female char...

Wulfy the Barb is my man.

Micah Foehammer 04-11-2002 09:32 PM

Artemis Entreri without a doubt.

Kaz 04-16-2002 10:09 AM

Not long ago, my favorite char was undoubtedly Drizzt. However, as has been said, his character doesn't seem to have changed in a while now... hope Salvatore writes a bit more about Drizzt in following books (don't have Sea of Swords, have the rest). I agree, Jarlaxle is just neat! Currently I'd put them like this: 1) Jarlaxle 2) Drizzt 3) Zaknafein 4) Catti-brie 5) Artemis Entreri (#5 has gone a long, long way from being "the bad guy"). Don't like the rest that much.
But I must also agree: Compared to many other books, Salvatore's characters simply seem stereotypical and two-dimensional :( I hope the trend will reverse itself, otherwise I may not bother to buy any books after Sea of Swords. That would be a sad end to the series, considering the first books of the series (The Dark Elf trilogy is one of my favorite series )

DRIZZT IS THE GREATEST OF ALL TIME

even though he is/did write an STAR WARS EPII book

Kresselack 04-22-2002 05:14 AM

I like Wulfgar better after his hell experience and hopes that he pulls out of it soon. Hmmm maybe he will even have an (evil)alignment change! Btw I hate it when drizzt makes a cameo appearances in other peoples series by Salvatore and makes some moralising sermon. God that is so disgusting!
