OK....so if we're here in this forum, it's a fairly safe bet that we're gamers. Or at least that we play BG2.
My question to you: how many of you also read? And I don't mean things like game manuals, i'm talking actually read. Personally, i've always been right into the Fantasy Genre, I was reading long before I began gaming. Aside from reading Salvatore's (I think it was him) series on Drizzt Do'urden and the Underdark, I own many other books and have read many more. PRobably too many to write down here http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif Among my favorites: Sara Douglass; Ian Irvine; without fail, we have Tolkein; All of Weis' and Hickmans' novels, although particularly the 5th gate cycle (was that it?) Anyway, on a final question: does anyone here also write? ------------------ The meek shall inherit the Earth. But the strong shall reclaim it as their own. http://www.blizzard.com/images/war3/...mon-hunter.gif |
Ive always read a lot of books in the fantasy genre. Ive always wanted to write, but it seems I never get around to starting anything. Is anyone else the same way? http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/blitz1.gif

I read fantasy mostly, and am beginning to get back into the writing part of it. Drifter, check the AD&D books forum here. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif And if you're looking for a good writer's forum, there's a link to one in Kaz's sig. It's a great place. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif ------------------ http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...s/lioness1.jpg http://www.zekmages.50megs.com/images/anthani1.gif Lil' Angel http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...angelwings.gif Sword Saint and Enchantress of the HADB Clan The Lady Lioness of Castle Kerhelm Waitress at Cloudy's Cafe, PB's Pub, and the Promised Land Official Restrainer of Table Dancers PeaceKeeping Force, Intelligence Division Emerald Dragoness of DOTW Incorrigible Redsox Fan Unsuspecting Victim of one of Jerome and Rikard's Plots Founder and Leader of TOTS Ah Een Romance die opbloeit in de Savanne Dubbed 'Nala' by Rikard, Legolas and Jerome--RRROOOOAAAAAAARRRRR!!! |

Uh-huh, I love reading. I like fiction (something in Agatha Christie's style), fantasy (yes, Wheel of Time is great; and almost anything by Glen Cook), and, of course, I love a lot of books that are hard to define by genre... Actually my favorite (well, "almost favorite" since it's difficult to choose the only one) writer is F. Scott Fitzgerald...
As to writing... I do not write stories or novels, but I write articles since I work as journalist http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif ------------------ Tanda, Assassin White Dragoness of The Dragoons Of The Wind [This message has been edited by Tananda (edited 10-30-2001).] |
ahh, we have an entire forum here dedicated to that. its called the book forum, its near the bottom... and right now im reading The Silent Blade by R.A. Salvatore http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif.
and yes, i'm a writer. if all goes well, and i mean WELL, you should expect to see my name on the front of a shelved book before the end of summer. |
This is a great topic, but it's probably better in our Fantasy Books forum. Please visit, I'd love to see more people there talking about AD&D, Tolkien, and other fantasy books (you can talk about sci-fi too if you want). http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

I read and storytell, which is a verbal tradition that pre-dates and includes rpg's back to the roots of human culture. I love books, especially any well-written fantasy and sci-fi that expand the possibilities and are open to imagination. I seek the same qualities in games. Engaging stories, great art, interactivity and fun.
The mention of IW as a gaming forum led me these thoughts: I play as dungeon master in AD&D, have for many years, and have oft wondered how many, if any writers use a dm's storytelling model in order to flesh out story ideas for a novel or even short story. I have quite a few notes of many "gametime" years of various events, plots and character reactions. My writing talent is very young, so I have yet to try to put some of the more original stories and charaters that were roleplayed pnp style over the years into a book format. I know a few players who wrote books about thier characters and included story elements from actual roleplays, but none of these are published yet. Also since D&d is a social game, I wonder if any gaming groups have collectivily written thier roleplays into a book form story. I have discussed doing this with a current gaming partner, but activities like writing books are a great committment that I dont have time for, yet. Books kick ass!!!! I can only read more http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif |
fantasy books are great
read most of forgotten realms and discworld series ------------------ mostly harmless |
I've read 'fantasy' and sci fiction for *years* (and years and years)--but only just started playing the games. I mean, I've always role-played but never officially. (think of G'kar's story-telling only in character http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif
I write, too. Started way-back-when when the library didn't get in books fast enough to suit me (really fast reader) and I needed *something* to do with my time as a kid to stay out of mischief. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif I've often wondered why, with all the talent and thought going into the creation of some characters, there haven't been any published works by gamers in general--even if it's only online for other gamers to read. I read mostly fantasy books but sometimes I also read a science fiction novel, preferably by Arthur C. Clarke, he is quite skilled at writing science fiction.

I've read quite a number of Fantasy books, but there's still a lot for me to read as well. I'm working on that http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...les/tongue.gif
I also write a bit, and some of it can be found here but I have yet to join the once upon a paper forum (too addicted to this one right now http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif) ------------------ The last arrow of Legolas kindled in the air as it flew, and plunged burning into the heart of a great wolf-chieftain. I started out volunteering in a library years ago when I was a teenager. I read their entire Science Fiction section at the time. Since I'm a trekkie, I've read hundreds of Star Trek books. I started reading fantasy novels after playing AD&D. I really enjoyed the Dragonlance novels.
Of course, I read the Wheel of Time books. These days, I've gotten this odd hunger for WWII books. It mostly comes from another game that I play called Combat Mission. I do understand that "need to read" I also read quickly and truly abhor the tiny paperbacks that many fantasy books consist of. I would usually try to buy the entire series so I could be somewhat satisfied. I just read the Shadows of Amn and TOB books. The second was mildly entertaining. I won't give away what happened in the books. I confess that the R.A. Salvatore books are like candy to me. I cannot put them down until finished and they end all too quickly for my tastes. ------------------ "I know that you believe you understand what you think I said, but I'm not sure you realize that what you heard is not what I meant." -Robert McCloskey http://www.wizardrealm.com/images/hs2.gif http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...lil-ribbon.gif

Token lackwit of HADB
Sycophant to the Wolf of Azure Hue
Long lost brother of DragonMage
Bearer of a work of art created by Sazerac
Jeg burde blive gennembanket for min flatulens.
|
I read a LOT although it has gone down since I ran across IW. I used to be at 2 books per day, now I barely make one per week! I also write, although I generally am too lazy. I have written quite a bit of poetry, much of which can be found in the Once upon a paper forum (see my sig)
I love fantasy and some sci-fi, but fantasy mostly. ------------------ http://imagehosting.bidbay.com/image.php3?imgID=614236 http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/hero2.gif Sapphire Dragoness of ALSB Waitress at Cloudy's Cafe Magess of Lady Lioness' Court Saint of the SoS Historian of IW Mage of the Morning Triumvirate Most Illustrious Arch-Magess of the Illuminati Lux omnis est Once Upon A Paper Writer's Forum |

I've always been a huge fan of fantasy novels, which is probably what got me into gaming. RA Salvatore, Raymond E. Fiest, Terry Brooks, Robert Jordan, and Eddings are some of my all time fav authors |
I love fantasy books! I started read them since I was 9 years old.
|
Even though I like to read I never gotten into fantasy books until after I started playing BG1. And i played PnP games long before that. Usually the books I read were none fiction or Stephen King books
|
For me, I think that when I started playing rpgs I found myself looking more and more at those fantasy/sci-fi books in the bookstore! So far, my favorites are C.S. Friedman (the BEST!), Terry Goodkind and Robert Jordan. I've been recommended Robin Hobb, so will be checking her books out too. Believe it or not, I have never read Lord of the Rings, but I DO have it ready to go, will read it once I get through the Goodkind series
I also like certain horror writers. The BEST in my opinion are anything written by Robert McCammon, hands down (although he doesn't write anymore, seems to have dropped off the face of the planet, no books, no website, nada...waaa) . Others I read are Brian Lumley (incredible imagination this guy has), Stephen King and Anne Rice. |
While I haven't written down any D&D stories from any gaming sessions, I have written several senarios for the RPGA to run at conventions. Though I haven't written any recently.
Valley of Mists was one of them. I also have the first chapter of a fantasy novel based on D&D. Anyone here enjoy Dean Koontz? 'Fear Nothing' and 'Sieze the Night' are wonderful. 'Sole Survivor' is as well. [ 11-11-2001: Message edited by: Wulfere ]
|

I've also read the first chapter or so of Seize the night and it sounded very promising, but I read a fantasy book instead |
I've read a lot of books, genreally two a week. But i dont usually read many fantasy books as i find them rather simplistic and disapointing a lot of the time. i've read most of the ones like wheel of time, Ad & d, tolkein and robin hobb. I only started reading them about a year or two ago anyway. Sci-FI tho has many great works esp. the short stories like "country of the kind" and "eastward ho!" and authors such as robert heinlein and Iain M. banks.

Regarding Sci-fi, Dramnek, have you read any The Galactic Milieu series or the Saga of the Exiles by Julian May? If so then what did u think?
The G-Milieu trilogy is one of my favourite sci-fi series, but I reckon that Fantasy is (usually) much better.... |
