Robbin Hobbs Assassins Apprentice is utterly outstanding to me and many others. Although one here didnt like it as much as most of us did (thats fine I dont like Shakespear lol, reading styles differ)most loved it. Give book 1 a shot. Its a 3 book series btw
Just as an edit addition I dont mean anything towards the person who didnt like it. I want to really stress that.

Good lord, do you have 3 hours (more importantly do I have the memory or the time)?

make it easier, pick a letter in the alphabet.

BTW, that are a lot of SciFi books that are as good or better than those in Fantasy. I have tried books in other areas (fiction & non-fiction) and they just don't do it for me.

Roger Zelazny - Amber Serie
Glen Cook - Black Company series - the most realistic fantasy sage (they are bad guys) - they are real, not stupid princes and princesses, good and bad, plain walking, gathering a few guys and saving world from unspeakable fate alone - there is life in these books !!!
YOU SHOULD READ IT

David Brin - two Uprising trilogies - great SF, a lot of strange, horrible, vicious, cunny, greedy, unforgivable (you can say: human) alien races I really recommend it

My all time favorites are Raymond Feist (love the serpentwar saga and the servant of the empire trilogy), Terry Goodkind, Robert Jordan (WoT rocks!), David Eddings (The Belgariad, not the Polgara the sorceres and Belgarath books), and Weiss/Hickman for the Dragonlance Heroes 1 & 2 series.

This is a shameless cut/paste from a reply I put together to the same question a few months back http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif - here it is again for what it's worth....

Here's a suggestion - go and borrow / buy a couple of short story anthologies, with contributions by some of the authors mentioned above and others. This will give you a taste of their styles and subjects. If you like a particular author's work then you can follow up.

For what it's worth, below are two of my own recommendations

The Hawk and Fisher Series by Simon R Green

The Master Li Series by Barry Hughart

These two may not be examples of "hardcore" fantasy a la Forgotten Realms, but I found both author's output very enjoyable. If you need to know more about them, an internet search on the author's names should give you enough info.

Happy reading http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Hi Mouse,

That's the first time I have seen someone recommend the Master Li series by Barry Hughart. Great to see someone else that likes them - loved the humour in them - can I interest you any shares in a Mustard mine http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/bunny.gif.

Most of my reading has been listed above already - the two things that this forum has introduced me to are Salvatore (Dark Elf trilogy) and Gemmel (the Rigante books) - keep the recommendations flooding in please.

Anne McCaffrey (Dragonriders of Pern series)
Tamora Pierce (where Lioness got her nick)
Robert Jordan (plot gets VERY complicated but if you manage to follow it its a SUPER series)
JRR Tokien (doh)
Ralf Isau (sorry German only)
Tad Williams (Dragonbone Throne, very cool)

My favourite Fantasy authors are (in no particular order) :

* The Great ones :

Robin Hobb (The Farseer trilogy, and especially the Ship trilogy)
David Eddings
Robert Jordan (WOT)
Raymond E. Feist
Anne Mc Caffrey (Pern)
Weiss and Hickman (The Death Gate series is an absolutely must read)
Mercedes Lackey, for all the Valdemar series

* The maybe not 'great' but quite funny ones :
Terry Brooks, for the Landover series (not Shannara)
Gordon R. Dickson, for the Dragon Knight series (hilarious)
Jennifer Roberson, for the Sword-XXX books

I also like M.Z. Bradley, even some say it's girly stuff ... http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

The top two series (even above Fiest guys sorry, I love his stuff too) in sheer scope, complexity, detail, suspense...everything that makes fantasy great... are the Song of Ice and Fire series by George RR Martin and the Wheel of Time series by Jordan. You need LOTS of time for either series though. They are huge books and reading them more than once isn't boring because there are so many little plot twists and hints. Other great stuff:

Steven Brust - Vlad the assasin series and the Khaveren Romances
Zelazny - Chronicles of Amber
Orson Scott card - Tales of Alvin Maker series and if ya like sci fi Ender's Game
If you like Cyberpunk (like the Matrix) try William Gibson's books, starting with Neuromancer
There are a lot more I could list but those are some of the best

Aw, c'mon, Mil! Polgara and Belgarath books gave a lot of information to fill in some gaps. They were also good for a laugh at the differences in views of the two (they always seem to be at odds). My father bought the The Sapphire Rose for me when I was a kid and I loved it! It made me go out and spend every last dime of allowance for the next couple of years catching up and finishing the series. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Also, I don't think anyone has mentioned Katherine Kerr's Westland novels. There are about 10 or 13 in total, but a great read. The first one is Darkspell.
