Who judges books by there covers?

I DO!

Among my favorite covers are the Frazetta covers of the Conan books.
The Yoshitaka Amano covers of the recent Moorcock compilations
The Wheel of Time covers that are painted...something ive noticed isnt happening really with the newer ones.
The covers to Woodsworth Classics books...always spot on wicked.

Why dont i like the dnd covers? Actually I do...The paintings are awesome!

I also havent ever read any terry pratchett but i like the way all his covers are that cartoony style and it seems to be uniform throughout his series.

Covers do alot for a book.
I buy Forgotten Realms because I collect that type.
But I have been in a store, and seen books, and by how much I like the picture on the front determines if I even pick up the book to read the synopsis on the back!
IMHO, an artist can make or break a sale.

Funny, I don't really notice covers so much. I'm more interested in flicking through it quickly to see if the writing catches my attention.

Yeah! Thats right! The 40th page!

If its lookin good by page 40 and the authors style is looking good then im all over it!

When i was a kid, all book covers were boring, and there was little,, if any 'blurb'so I learned to judge a book by reading page one. If I wanted to carry on reading, then I'd take the book. Usually this method worked, but not always!
The only exception to 'boring' book covers were the American sci-fi paperbacks just coming onto the market in Britain after WW2. Very lurid and very attractive to a 9year-old. I chose 'em for the covers, and as a consequence I read an awful lot of rubbish - I had bought it so I was going to darn well READ it! - but I also found some brilliant authors that I have loved ever since!

Lol thanks Grand-Ranger!

An old english teacher of mine taught me the 40th page trick!

Sometimes it works...sometimes it doesnt. But it is kind of an interesting little evaluation technique!

I went into a book store and saw the picture of Drizzt on the cover of Dark Elf Trilogy and ended up buying it and teh Icewind Dale Trilogy!

I, personally, look at a book in this order:

Author (what's new by someone I know?)
Title (does it sound interesting?)
Cover (if it's got a dragon on it, I'll always at least take a peek!)

THEN, I'll read the back cover, the intro and maybe even the preface.
I have never bought a book just because I liked the cover, but I will at least pick it up if the cover looks interesting.

Y'know, that's about exactly the same way i check books... especially the part about the dragons on the cover http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...miles/eek7.gif although I generally read the back cover no matter WHAT the title/cover is. I generally don't read intro or preface, though. Of course, with me it's a bit different, because I can only get German books from bookstores and I refuse to read the translation, so I buy all my books from www.amazon.de I basically just check what sounds interesting in the bookstore so that I can buy it from amazon. However, if I start reading it, then I might get so intrigued that I buy the German version! Yecch!
BTW, I consider the Terry Pratchett covers awful. They put too much weight on *ahem* beautiful women, which I do NOT think to be an essential part of Pratchett's books! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no.../angryfire.gif

What's funny about my #3 is that I've consequently ended up liking a book that had nothing to do with dragons just because I picked it up for a dragon being on the cover! LOL! And one had a draconian race (really seemed more lizard like and violent) in a Sci-Fi combined w/Vampires. Weird book - but ok read. http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif
