Who judges books by there covers?
I DO! Among my favorite covers are the Frazetta covers of the Conan books. The Yoshitaka Amano covers of the recent Moorcock compilations The Wheel of Time covers that are painted...something ive noticed isnt happening really with the newer ones. The covers to Woodsworth Classics books...always spot on wicked. Why dont i like the dnd covers? Actually I do...The paintings are awesome! I also havent ever read any terry pratchett but i like the way all his covers are that cartoony style and it seems to be uniform throughout his series. |
Covers do alot for a book.
I buy Forgotten Realms because I collect that type. But I have been in a store, and seen books, and by how much I like the picture on the front determines if I even pick up the book to read the synopsis on the back! IMHO, an artist can make or break a sale. |

Funny, I don't really notice covers so much. I'm more interested in flicking through it quickly to see if the writing catches my attention.

When i was a kid, all book covers were boring, and there was little,, if any 'blurb'so I learned to judge a book by reading page one. If I wanted to carry on reading, then I'd take the book. Usually this method worked, but not always!
The only exception to 'boring' book covers were the American sci-fi paperbacks just coming onto the market in Britain after WW2. Very lurid and very attractive to a 9year-old. I chose 'em for the covers, and as a consequence I read an awful lot of rubbish - I had bought it so I was going to darn well READ it! - but I also found some brilliant authors that I have loved ever since! ------------------ http://www.ranchoweb.com/images/bg2guy/bitchingcopy.gif http://www.ranchoweb.com/images/bg2guy/fljotsdale.gif |

Lol thanks Grand-Ranger!
An old english teacher of mine taught me the 40th page trick! Sometimes it works...sometimes it doesnt. But it is kind of an interesting little evaluation technique! |
I went into a book store and saw the picture of Drizzt on the cover of Dark Elf Trilogy and ended up buying it and teh Icewind Dale Trilogy!

I, personally, look at a book in this order:
Author (what's new by someone I know?) Title (does it sound interesting?) Cover (if it's got a dragon on it, I'll always at least take a peek!) THEN, I'll read the back cover, the intro and maybe even the preface. I have never bought a book just because I liked the cover, but I will at least pick it up if the cover looks interesting. ------------------ http://sc.communities.msn.com/tn/02/...sSite/2/4a.jpg http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/hero2.gif The day we stop learning is the day we start dying!(c) Co-Owner/Operator of the Evil Petting Zoo and devout member of the HADB clan. BTW, I consider the Terry Pratchett covers awful. They put too much weight on *ahem* beautiful women, which I do NOT think to be an essential part of Pratchett's books! http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no.../angryfire.gif ------------------ http://imagehosting.bidbay.com/image.php3?imgID=614236 http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/no...iles/hero2.gif Sapphire Dragoness of ALSB Waitress at Cloudy's Cafe Guardian of the Temple of Aerie (specialized in GenCon and BG) Most Illustrious Arch-Magess of the Illuminati Lux omnis est [This message has been edited by Kaz (edited 10-03-2001).] |
