I was wondering if anyone has read the Wheel of
Time series by Robert Jordan. I am on book 5 about midway through

Yup. 2nd best fantasy series ever...maybe third. The only thing that I don't like about Jordan's writing is that he's got so much stuff going on at one time. I've never seen so many friggin' characters in one series...

I started it go through book 5 or 6 (I think, I can't really remember) then I got bored with it. Didn't seem to be going anywhere. I may try to pick it back up.

I think that there are currently 6 or 7 in the series and there's no end in sight. Mr. Jordan has a story going on here with umteenmillion different minor plotlines going. It'll take him 30 books to finish up all the storylines. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Right now there are 10 books in the series. The 10th book came out a few months i think?

My problem with the series is there are many books and they come out about a year or two apart. By the time the next one comes out I've forgotten what I have already read. The books themselves are well written. I really just lost track of where I was at in them. I really need to get to the library and start back on them.

Yeah, I just finished Book II; The Great Hunt. I love the series so far.

The 9th book came out around November it's called A Winters Heart. Books 7 & 8 showed a serious drop in quality though , 9 is an improvement although still not as good as the earlier books.

I LOVE the WOT series ! I am actually deep in the last book "Winter's Heart".

It is dense and very very very complex - it is true that it gets more and more difficult to remember characters names, so many of them they are. Jordan seems to add more plots in every book that he solves anyway - I hope that he knows what he is doing, and that the last book won't be a big disappointment ! Totally agree with your comments on WOT series Moraine - it's a bit like a CRPG where you battle through all the monsters and dungeons hoping that the prize at the end is going to be worth it. I have found the journey thus far to be fascinating, and look forward to a great ending sequence (I hope). The story is so complex that I usually pick up the previous 1 or 2 books about a month before the release date of the next installment.

The trouble with this - as with many other series - is that publishers push the author to keep on writing WAY past the natural end. Which is why the books get boring. The best writers stop while the readers are still begging for more, and go on to write something different.
Can you imagine being a writer and desperately wanting to dump a scenario so you can do something else, but your publisher only wants what you have always done before - and you need the cash?!
Not many writers can produce 4+ novels in a series and still be brilliant.
