I see no one has posted here, I just wondered if anyone has been reading
anything good lately. I just finished the AD&D Forgotten Realms Avatar Trilogy (2nd time), AWESOME set. Now I'm going to read Prince of Line and Crucible (Never read those). Ziroc |
Erm, well the reason why I haven't been posting here recently (the user formerly known as "Dwarf" due to a certain vagueness on the login form) is because I've been re reading loads of my favourite Tolkien, Stephen Lawhead, David Gemmel books and an old trilogy called The True Game by Teri.S.Shepper again. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
|
I finished The Silent Blade by Salvatore in the Dark Elf series, it was pretty good, there are two more I need to read but I was too lazy to find them, now I am reading Lord of the Rings - which is very good.

Hi Ziroc, well any good books, well if you have a thing for vampires check out a book called "Sunglasses after dark" it´s a set of four books in one, pretty ok, it´s a female comic writers first book. Pretty OK.
Robin Hob?? Assasins quest books are really good. Right now I´m into some Terry Pratchett books and also alot of H.P Lovecraft and also the Sword of truth serie.. Puh, and I still have some Feist and Jordan books left to read.. Damn, I need a vacation! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif ------------------ http://www.najk.net/wolfgir/bilder/wolfie.gif ::HOWLING WOLFGIR THE MAD WOLF:: |
I have been reading the saga of Recluce. I thought it was pretty good, anyone else read it. I had a problem though with book 1, it is written in first person, it's a good thing I bought books 1-4 or probably wouldn't have finished the series.
How about the Sword of truth series, or the Wheel of time. |
Pandora by Anne Rice. Not too long, but one of the coolest, most evocative and romantic books I have ever read. I fell totally in love with Pandora after reading it.
------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/genwalk.gif Memnoch - Custodian of the Order of the Holy Flame http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/fire3.gif |
I am in Crusade, the third book of the Horselords...an old book that I had never read...and now regret putting it off...it is excelent!!

Am reading The Witching Hour by Anne Rice for about the 100th time! A really good book IMHO - really good characterisation - I really empathise with her characters.
I never just read one thing at a time, and have also just started (on a more serious note) No Logo by Naomi Klein. But that would be off-topic I guess!!! ------------------ http://www.gldb.com/wayno/epona2.gif Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so. |

As wolfgir said, the Farseer Trilogy by Robin Hobb are good.
I'm reading those atm. ------------------ http://raymondo_magnum.tripod.com/Fantasy/izual.gif Thou Shalt be punished... I think |
Epona, wasn't she the Celtic godess of horses? AH, it's good to see a fellow Londoner (even if I moved out of it hen I was six).

I am reading Annie Rice's Vampire books. I am on the Vampire Lestat. Started them 'cause gf wanted me to so we could have a common base of reading, and I wanted to read more about Memnoch's pseudo, but I hate reading books out of order, and his is fifth. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

BK, I forgive you on this occasion http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif - The Vampire Lestat is a classic. By all means read them in order, that's the way to do it. Don't forget to read Pandora, it's such a classic. ------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/genwalk.gif Memnoch - Custodian of the Order of the Holy Flame http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/fire3.gif |
Anne Rice is obviously a real hit around here!!
The Mayfair Trilogy is my favourite of all her series, really steeped in a kind of semi-pseudo Celtic mythological past which I love, (and yes Balgin, you are spot on about my nick), mixed in with New Orleans of the last couple of centuries! A heady mix to be sure, and a compelling read. Memnoch, you must start at the beginning for that trilogy, reading them out of order will make little sense and be quite confusing, I'm sure. The Witching Hour is a great thick tome, but it is not easy to put down. Anne Rice is also good at having links between the different series of books, which is another thing I love an author to do. There is a character who is a major part of the Taltos series who also appears in the Lestat series, especially in 'Body Thief', so it gives a 'real world' feeling to all her works. I have not yet read Pandora, but intend to do so! ------------------ http://www.gldb.com/wayno/epona2.gif Time is an illusion. Lunchtime doubly so. |
David and Leigh Eddings wrote 2 epic fantasy series that explore and expand the world of magic and the reasons or causes of magic. as well as being great stories. one is called the Belgariad. it's like six books. the other is the Elinium. at least i think that is what they are called.
anne rice best work by far is Sleeping Beauty series. |
I just finished The Bakers Boy by J V Jones that someone had recomended on the old board. I thought it was good and will be buying the other two in the series.
|
Let's keep adding to this thread, so that we can all learn from each other's experiences! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

I just finished Salvatore's "The Silent Blade" too. Looks like the start of another great series. I've just started "Krondor: Assasins" by Feist - will tell you more about it when I finish.

I just finished Doom Brigade by Margaret Weis and my dragonlance reading list finally reached number 40 :o). I really enjoyed this book, it was a whole new approach to the way of life of the draconians and some really funny scens too, i caught myself 4-5 times crying from laughter, once again a beautiful work by Margaret Weis. Anyone else here reading lots of dlance novels? The new trilogy (War Of Souls) is really awesome and i can't wait till the 2nd book comes out!
Oh about 3 days ago i finished Icewind Dale Trilogy (i know i'm late ), it was really good especially the first book, although in some parts of the third book the was alot of exaggeration and thats what makes dlance so different. Although dlance is also fantasy, from my point of view the characters look more real and realistic than any other character on other worlds. Anyone agree or disagree with that? I hope for some answers Dalamar |
Zoric hey, hmmm maybe I should have called myself Momnech.
I was going to start reading the latest R.E.Fiest book but got distracted. "Shards of a broken crown" I think it is. ------------------ FAIR DINKUM! |
Dalamar, I agree with you - Weis and Hickman were able to introduce a basic level of humanity to their characters. I was curious about the state of the Dragonlance world now. Do you feel that the Age of Mortals has that same magic about it (well, obviously not literally!) than the previous ages?
------------------ http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/genwalk.gif Memnoch - Custodian of the Order of the Holy Flame http://www.angelfire.com/anime2/memnoch/fire3.gif |
I've also just finished the latest instalment in the Gotrek and felix novels (vaguely based on King Gautrek's Saga (Danish in origin I believe)). It wouldn't have been too bad if I hadn't seen a character in the first chapter and said "spot the traitor". I was, unfortunately correct. I only failed to forsee two plot developements but I wasn't far wrong. I've re read chunks of The True Game again and am talking myself into finishing the only two David Gemml books that I haven't finished yet, "Waylander II" and "Sword in the Storm". I generally like Gemmel, Moorwood, Lawhead (Stephen), and various others, I might re read Rowan by Anne Mc'Caffrey, a Sci Fi novel in wich telepaths steer ships and all sorts of things happen.

It's not one I'm reading at the moment, but I can recommend Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's The Mote In God's Eye. I recommended it to Ramon in Ziroc's tv thread on the GD forum. Couldn't remember the authors at the time. Good science fiction book as he requested, but one with a whole lot of human interest and some very interesting questions/observations. It's about a high tech society and it's "first contact" with another isolated species. Very well done and I am happy to suggest it to you all for reading.

Ok and another one, Orson Scott Card "Ender's Game" (there are several books in this theme, but this is the key one). I know this is a FANTASY forum...but I figure anyone who reads Asimov or Bradbury as some have mentioned, also like science fiction....so, another book I'd heartily recommend (TO YOU RAMON for sure, if you see this!!!) is the one above. I have to tell you that I got it by mistake from a book club many years ago and I still remember the basic story and some very strong emotional responses to this book. INCREDIBLE. This is not light reading. Not at all. There were some things that were very disturbing, at least for me. Basic premise is that we are at war way off in the future..Andrew (aka Ender) is drafted to battle college at a tender age and he is trained in state of the art techniques. Story is about the war/society and also about the human being- Ender and what he endures psycholgically. It had a big impact on me. Again, a dark one and I'll admit it isn't one I'd sit down and read again just for fun. I'll do Xanth or a good light romance for that. But for powerhouse hit you where it counts reading, Orson Scot Card is the ticket.

Well, about 5th age, i believe that the original idea was good, but the way Jean Rabe introduced this idea in her books was a huge disapointment.Very few of her characters have any character at all! I believe that 5th age in the hands of Weis & Hickmann would become a masterpiece. Krynn is definately changing, this is not bad, nothing ever stays static and dlance (although is fantasy) makes no exception.Jean Rabe's books are not so good (in the first one i got sleepy! this is the first time that something like this happens to me with a dlance book!) but i encourage everyone to read them because this way you will have the opportunity to read the War Of Souls trilogy which is absolutely a masterpiece! (the 2nd book is to come in April 10) i haven't felt such anticipation for a book since the time i was waiting for DoSF :o)
Take a look if you want with some dlance forums to see what i'm talking about :o). Dalamar |
I would also recommend "Divers Hands" by Darrel Schweitzer.(1979 from The Years Best Horror Stories Series VII, I discovered it in Cosmic Knights, an anthology edited by Isaac Asimov). It's a very Ravenloft esque tale set in Medieval Greece. Damned good if the Nekatu didn't take quite such a rediculous final form but it's a bloody good read (even if it's an adaptation of various Irish folk tales that rip off The Cyclops chapter from The Odyssey). Read it if you can.

i'm reading the dune books right now. as soon as i finish i'm gonna read orson scott card's (my favorite) shadow of the hedgemon.

Dafan, read the Robin Hobb's Ship trilogy ! It is a masterpiece ! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif
I am a book devourer, anyway, so I have read a LOT of Fantasy books. My favourite Fantasy authors : Anne McCaffrey, Mercedes Lackey, David Eddings, Raymond E. Feist, Robert Jordan, Terry Brooks (yes, him !), M.Z. Bradley, Jennifer Roberson (especially the Tiger and Del series), Weiss & Hickmann (the Death Gates series is an absolute must !), Robin Hobb of course. Also Zelazny. Maybe I have forgotten some ... ------------------ http://fc1ddq.free.fr/stan2.gif The world is my oyster ! |
I'll try something of that

Hey Guys,
This is not a fantasy book, but it is about time travel in the middle ages. I just finished it and I thought it was great! It's Michael Crichton's TIMELINE. LofA - I told you you would like J.V. Jones. Did you ever go out and visit her website? www.jvj.com. Be sure to check out Bodger and Grift. They are hilarious! I finished A CAVERN OF BLACK ICE by her, last month and it was really good as well! ------------------ Sir Taliesin Ten Rings there are, and nine gold torcs on the battlechiefs of old...
