Am I the only one who thinks that Dragons ought to give a little more XP than 300? I was a little dissapointed today when I spent a good 45 minutes fighting one, only to have it give me a measly 300XP. Frustrating, but the armor it gave me was pretty nice.

Which Dragon was that ?

Also the XP is scaled on your level so it depends on if there was anyone in your party of a higher level.

But the NWN dragons are so small, it's more like you're fighting Ancient Pygmy Dragons That Can't Fly. And those aren't worth as much xp as the real ones, are they?
Plus NWN reduced creature xp to 10% of the pnp values so the proper xp reward for beating the kind of Ancient Pygmy Dragon you did at your level would indeed have been greater, at 3000 points.

I know that the one in lvl 5 (?) was rough, so when Razzmatazz took umbrage at my presence, I expected a tough fight as well. But he was a puss, comparatively speaking, and it was the Rakshasa who were were the pain.

Um, the blue on level 13, in that secret dungeon place. I was the highest level at 24, my partner was at 20.
Maybe I'm just used to BGII/ToB, where you'd get like 60 000XP for a dragon.

WOW going tough at level 24 on Level 13.

I know the dragon you are talking about. Drops a nice armour but is a PAIN to kill. Especially since he has a HIGH Fort score so is almost impossible to dev crit.

Yeah, but my equipment is pretty good. People usually have a hard time hitting me, and I have a hard time hitting them.
That Black dragon in level 12 was MUCH easier. I could at least hit it most of the time.

Go play with old Greeny.. THEN let us know how easy dragons are :D :D

In the stone tower on level...8 I believe. 4000+ HP's.

Sir Goulum 08-31-2005 12:18 AM

Yuck, I'll remember to avoid that one.

As with most of the NWN rules, they imported it wrongly from the pnp stuff. XP is supposed to be measured by relative Encounter Class but also by hard level.

Meaning, fighting an easy lvl 1 goblin should give you 30 xp but fighting an easy crypt thing should give you 300. Not to mention there is somehow a cap on how much xp an 'impossible' encounter can give. A lvl 20 impossible is a whole lot different from a lvl 40 impossible believe you me. ;)

Sir Goulum 08-31-2005 03:29 PM

What do those 'impossible' and 'moderate' things mean anyways? I've beaten many creatures that were labled as impossible.

Quoting from the official Player's Handbook:
(Granted not the wisest thing to do... )

Page 30

Challange Rating. The higher this number, the more powerful the enemy. Commonly four characters of a certain level are able to defeat one creature with a CR equal to the average level of the characters with a moderate amount of difficulty.

Monster Challange Rating.....Catagory.........Colour....Explanation
+5 and greater levels..........Impossible........Purple....Death is guaranteed
+3,+4 levels......................Overpowering....Red... ....You'll have difficulty defeating this creature
+1,+2 levels......................Very difficult.....Orange...Survival is not guaranteed, without drawing
.................................................. ..........................on potions or other magical aids
Same level as the...............Challanging......Yellow.....You can defeat a couple of these before resting
character or less
-2, -3 levels......................Moderate.........Blue. ......You'll take a few wounds
-4, -5 levels......................Easy...............Gre en.....Worth lettle XP but won't hurt you much
-6 and less levels...............Effortless..........White.... .Not worth your time

I think that this scale was drawn up for the Original Campaign for pre-epic characters. A level 8 monster may be impossible for a level 3 character to defeat but the gap between 38 and 33 is not as significant.

Sir Goulum 09-01-2005 12:49 AM

Ah, so it doesn't really apply to higher level characters.

Mozenwrathe 09-05-2005 08:18 PM

Dragons should give a lot more XP. and gold. lots of gold. tons of gold. and stuff, like being able to skin them and make armor and shields and use their fangs as blades and...

thing is, we ARE limited to what we can do in a digital format. the XP should rise on the dragons, yes, as should the prizes one wins on them. I would not mind seeing a dragonfang dagger, a dracotalon sword, perhaps a pair of dragonwingbone nunchaku, a dragon femur quarterstaff of smiting, and some dragonblood shields. *could even come up with the theoretical damage and such for each.* And the dragons, though legendary, ought not be the final things to fear within the Underdark. (and they aren't with those damn drow on level thirteen!!!). some excessively tough enemies out to give out some excessively good XP. it only seems fair. that, or with some of the more populated villains, have them drop some rather interesting and intriguing items. don't even have to be unique, just... wow-eyes-bulging-out level.
