Has any one found anything about whether the ability to cast 1st lvl spells has to be innate, or if casting from scrolls would count? Haven't found anything myself yet, but would like to know.

philip 06-20-2003 11:08 AM

I don't think casting spells from scrolls would work, though I don't have SoU yet but it wouldn't make any sense. In P&P they have to be able to cast it innately.

Dar'tanian 06-21-2003 01:12 PM

I dont have SoU yet ether but is the arcane archer like the one in Dark Alliance?

robertthebard 06-21-2003 04:00 PM

Don't know for sure, but since DA is an offshoot of BG, probably.

Wulfere 06-30-2003 07:30 AM

I just got SoU, but haven't had a chance to install or play it yet. In PnP DnD your Arcane Archer must have spent enough time as a Wizard, Bard or Sorcerer to be able to cast 1st level arcane spells from memory. Basically have one level as one of those three classes. They have other reqiurments as well. Elf only, +6 Base Attack Bonus etc... They had to be 7th level before they could start as an Arcane Archer.

It wouldn't count as then the the Rogue class would also be eligible. You know, the 'Use Magic Device' skill...

lol, that was what I was * shooting * for.

robert, I think you should multi-class to Druid. What level are you? The spider is trying to tell you something silly! ;)
Druid's rule this expansion to NWN! So many animals to help and talk to not to mention how many I can summon to my aide in tight situations.

robert the Druid! ;)

no, no no, I could never do it...Actually, I've only ever really played one bard in any of the Bioware games. I really am a bard. Besides, rangers and Dr. Dolittle can talk to animals too. New class, Veterinarian Monk.

nope, it's actually Elf or Half-Elf

oldbittercraig 07-14-2003 07:49 PM

i would think the ability to cast would mean just that.

a thief cannot cast a spell- they can use a scroll.

someone give it a go, though.

SpiritWarrior 07-15-2003 03:22 AM

Yeah I still seriously doubt it though, but who knows with the amount of discrepencies and exploits in this game eh? Robert, let us know man! :D

Chewbacca 07-15-2003 04:31 AM

Scroll use doesn't count.

robertthebard 07-15-2003 01:35 PM

Rogues don't count, have to be innate. Oh well, good excuse to run a bard, lol.I have a couple of different combos running now, one, bard/arcane archer, is actually pretty successful. Killed one dragon in escape, and managed to stay alive, mostly, against lvl 9. Some of us will remember that battle, I am sure. new idea, bard, assassin, arcane archer, except hard to overcome alignment difference in arcane archer. be a nice touch though. My current favorite combo, rogue, assassin, shadow dancer. rogue 5, assassin 10, shadowdancer 5. he is the ultimate killing machine, hide in plain sight rules for an assassin.

Well I just started this game and all the talk about arcane archers got me wanting to try it out ,however I started with a half elf ranger(archer?ranger)sounded right to me but as I read these messages it seems I goofed! Am I on the right track or am I going the wrong way thanks for any help..

/)eathKiller 07-31-2003 01:11 PM

My arcane archer is 9 levels fighter, 1 level Wizard, 10 levels arcane archer...

He turned out just fine, though he's not even able to cast first level spells, the skill is a given feat of being a mage, the fighter levels allowed me to have some nice feats and the arcane archer feats are awesome!

I've read the manual but i'm still stumped on how to actually BECOME an arcane archer. If you fulfill all of the requirements then on your next level up will the option be open to you? Also, right now i'm a level 3 mage and I started reading up on this acrane archer stuff. Pretty much I need the 2 feats and the +6 attack bonus. The 2 feats shouldn't be that hard to get but how do I get the attack bonus. Also, do I need a level of fighter or something to become an arcane archer?

Micah Foehammer 08-06-2003 08:02 AM

Okay, remember that the +6 BAB is your BASE BAB, not modified with feats or item bonuses. Once you have satisfied all of the requirements the Arcane Archer prestige class will appear as a level up option.

No, you can make it to arcane archer, assuming you have all of the prerequisites, without taking ANY fighter levels. HOWEVER, the FASTEST path to the AA is by taking fighter levels and adding in a level of arcane spell caster. It is possible to stay as a pure mage and then become an Arcane Archer - however, you won't reach the BAB requirements until level 12 mage, so you lose out on two possible levels of the AA.

Hmm so far I have one level wizard and 6 levels ranger.Am I going in the right direction? I have Point blank shot feat and weapon focus longbow,am not sure about that bab thing.Should I try 1 level of fighter? or will that give me too many classes? Thanks

Granamere 08-06-2003 03:02 PM

There is a max of three classes so if you took a level of fighter you would not be able to get any of any other class. Not sure on the BAB thing either but I would think you are on the right path.

You should be able to take it on your next level up.

Check your BAB on your character sheet on the first page. It has a "Base Attack Bonus" line that reports your unmodified BAB.

Piestrider 08-06-2003 05:00 PM

Thanks for the info Michah. I'll be sure and tell you how the whole AA thing comes out.

john 08-06-2003 06:50 PM

Yes I made it to AA on the next level up!!

quietman1920 08-13-2003 03:08 PM

I have Just reached a grand total of level 9 based on the Arcane arher construct recomended in a prior post...and I have to Thank Legolas, wherever you are. I did an elven Ranger to start and am at the point where I have 6 levels of Ranger, 1 level of Wizard, and 2 levels of Arcane Archer.

Rapid Shot was always nice, but it sucked down arrows & needed magic to get some monsters. But, when i got my second level of AA, I got 'Imbued Arrow' as a feat: turns arrow into level 5 Fireball. personally, I can't wait to try it with the Rapid Shot feat on: I'll be firing like an M1 Abrams tank on Speed. (sure hope the DMs don't mind those big divots taken out of the Dungeon floors..!)

Jedimaster 08-14-2003 09:20 PM

My Arcane Archer is 9 levels Ranger and 1 Wizard and 1 Arcane Archer so far.

Cloudbringer 09-16-2003 12:41 PM

WHOHOO! My ranger (lvl 6 with 1 lvl wizard) now has 3 levels of Arcane Archer! Can we say 'too cool'?! That imbued arrow trick is fantastic!
