Do they look any differend from humans in-game? Cant see a difference...there are no pointy ears so such...what are the physical differences?

philip 06-30-2004 08:43 AM

There aren't many differences between humans and halfelves in looks and those are probably too small to add to a game. The important differences are that it gains some elven abilities in a lesser form (for example elf immunity to enchantment spells. halfelf +2 bonus on saving throw).

Half-elves have a ears that are a little bit pointed (not so much there would be difference in the game) From my p&p phb:

Half-elven height 5-6 foot, weight 90-180 pounds. Half-elves are paler, fairer and smoother-skinned than humans but skin tone, hair color vary just as human's does. The shape of the eyes still is almond-like.

Tyrion 06-30-2004 09:20 AM

but are they shorter in game?

sep257 06-30-2004 02:11 PM

half elves use the same character model as humans.

Illumina Drathiran'ar 06-30-2004 04:02 PM

The heads are different, though. Just slightly. The toolset confirms this... but I doubt it makes a difference, in the game itself.

Firetoad 06-30-2004 10:53 PM

But in the actual game play they are horrible, probably the worst race to play as. They don't get thief bonuses and great dex like elves, and they don't get extra feats and skills like humans. They only get a very pared down version of elf with no specialty class. IMO their only real use is roleplaying value.

Firetoad 06-30-2004 11:17 PM

Please say so if you think i'm wrong, I need a good reason to pla yas a half-elf.

Illumina Drathiran'ar 07-01-2004 12:02 AM

I do believe that half-elves get the human "any favored class" rule. But they don't get the bonus feat.

Tyrion 07-01-2004 11:55 AM

They do get small bonuses...but I can't see their value, really

philip 07-01-2004 12:32 PM

Doesn't anyone roleplay anymore

Tyrion 07-01-2004 02:25 PM

I sure do...have one running, actually the most fun Ive had with any character, so far...but it could be because of Shadowlords and Dreamcatcher

Those are great for roleplaying. I had more fun with those two series then with any of the official Bioware modules

vesselle 07-11-2004 07:01 AM

really? i know about them, but i've not heard how they were by someone who's actually played them. they're available on the vault, right?
i loved what we got of rob's "Witches Wake". and gagne's "elegia eternum" & the other one by him, "excrucio eternum". hrmmm was that it? doesn't quite sound right. :(

i like roleplaying w/ a strong story, character development and a coherent plot. will dreamcatcher and shadowlords live up to that?

*grins* sorry to pump you for info, but for the most part, i trust the opinions of players from IW.

vesselle,

Shadowlords and Dreamcatcher are two of the best series of non-Bioware created mods available. I strongly recommend them. I've actually played through both series twice with different characters - once solo and once multiplayer. Give them a try.

You USUALLY can't wrong with the Hall of Fame mods on the vault, BUT there are some that I didn't like. The most notable of these is Abaddon's Gates of Myth Drannor. I just didn't enjoy it.

DrowArchmage 08-05-2004 08:44 PM

humans, elves, together? Now that to me is terrible

Illumina Drathiran'ar 08-06-2004 02:06 AM

I wonder what your stance is on half-drow...

DrowArchmage 08-06-2004 06:50 PM

a half drow is a monster and i'm sure if one was seen in Menzoberrazan or ChedNasad they would be tortured in the ruleing houses dungeon

Luvian 08-07-2004 01:59 AM

Half-Elves are smaller in the game. I always play them. Human just look like some huge brutes, and elves are so small they almost seem like some tall kids.

They get bonuses in the same skills as elves do, but only +1 in most cases. They do have the human's favored class rule. They are more resistant to mind affecting spells, and are immune to sleep.

Edit: OH! I remember seeing some Half-Drow in the 2nd Edition Forgotten Realm Setting, as well as some reference to them in the Monster's Handbook.

Q'alooaith 08-07-2004 11:37 AM

I thought half drow where killed at birth in most cases.

DrowArchmage 08-07-2004 04:24 PM

in most cases yes but there are a select few.the mersanary jarlaxle for example happend to save 5 half drow to use in his band

Illumina Drathiran'ar 08-08-2004 12:59 AM

That doesn't sound right to me. I can think of only two scenarios that might produce a half-drow.
a) A drow follower of Vhaeraun couples with a human. Vhaeraun encourages the propogation of half-drow. No problems there.
b) A drow follower of Eilistraee couples with a human... and she sure as hell doesn't have a problem with that.

"But Illumina, what about rape?"
That's easy. If a human, by some miracle, managed to find a chance to force himself upon a drow female, and was able to finish, the female would be killed for humiliating the race.
And a Lloth-following drow forcing himself (or herself) on a human?

Such a thing would never happen.

I'm sure it could. Not often, but it's possible.

Illumina, have you read any Drizzt books? have you heard of him? it is possible for a rouge drow to fall in love and mate with a human girl.

Illumina Drathiran'ar 08-09-2004 12:17 PM

Of course I've heard of Drizzt.
Did you read my post? Have you heard of Eilistraee? I covered this already.

As for me so readily dismissing rape... I'm sure it *could* happen but I doubt Lloth would be happy about it... It would contribute to the bastardization of the race.

Not all evil drows worship Loth, not all of Loth's followers act the same either, you can do strange things in the heat of combat.

And most importantly, none of the D&D gods are omniscient. She might keep track of some of her most devout followers, but that's all. If she could know everything that's happening in the world, down to the lowest soldiers of peasants, she'd be ruling the world already.

DrowArchmage 08-09-2004 07:58 PM

true rape could happen but its not likely, especially for a drow

I must ask that the conversation on sexual crime be stopped, even if it is referring to unreal events.

Some people on our forums are sensitive to the topic.

Thank you in advance for your understanding.

Why did you bring this thread back after a month of inactivity ?

pritchke 09-16-2004 11:29 AM

Well anything is possible, take Zhai for example.

Zhai's Story

Zhai is one of the most rare combinations of races found anywhere in the world of the Forgotten Realms. Her mother was Drow, a dark elf from the subterranean city of Menzoberranzan, while her father was a wood elf from the village of Cedarleaf.

Racial combinations that include dark elf almost never involve a loving union, but Zhai's story is atypical. Her father and mother met when he found her mother wounded and left for dead after one of the vicious Drow raids on the surface world. Zhai's father nursed her back to health, and despite their initial enmity, the pair came to know each other and find that they were much more alike than their heritage might indicate. They fell in love and had a child, Zhai. Source
