I just bought a bundle of Neverwinter Nights and Shadows of Undrentide. I've hardly played any of it but it's already kicking ass!

However, I'm a bit confused in the tutorial because there are so many people and I have to talk to certain ones but I can't find them :S . Ah well, I'll find them sooner or later and get out of the academy.

All I need to do now is get Hordes of the Underdark and I can join Z and everyone else! Woohoo!

The only people you *really* have to talk to are the instructors for your own class... Fighter, Rogue, Mage, or Priest, The map comes in handy at a time like this, as do mapnotes.

Turst me I use the map a lot. It really helps to mark you map as well so you know where to go back to for a certian quest or to find a certain NPC.

Question: In the tutorial, do you always speak dumb? Eg. "Me not know much 'bout plague". I tried restarting with a higher charisma but I still speak dumb... Maybe it's intelligence that affects it?

Stratos 06-04-2004 09:10 AM

Having a intelligence score of 10 (or was it 9?) or lower makes you speak like a retard.

Jaradu 06-04-2004 09:16 AM

LOL damn! I figured I didn't need intelligence since I was a fighter. Anyway, I couldn't afford to spend much in anything since you only get 30 points to distribute. Is it like Knights of the Old Republic where you can add points to your attributes every few levels? I hope so or I'm screwed - he only has 15 in Str, Dex and Con. Or maybe in 3rd Edition rules you don't need as high stats, I don't know (I've only played 2nd Edition before)

andrewas 06-04-2004 09:29 AM

Try to avoid having a stat below 10. At 10, yo get no bonus but also no penalty. Below 10, you take a -1 penalty to any check using that stat. With INT, you will also get less skill points, which hurts even a fighter.

You will get extra stat points every 5 levels, and you will get many items/potions to boost them as well.

Stratos 06-04-2004 10:03 AM

Heh, if he plays a Fighter with less than 10 in intelligence he's getting one measly skill point per level-up. :D Not to mention some of the fighting feats wont be available to him.

Edit: Isn't it one stat point every four levels?

Time to re-restart :D (Started with a halfelven ranger/cleric, but wanted to wait until i understood the magic system)

EDIT: Thanks for your help, guys. So should I put loads of points in intelligence so that I can boost up str dex and con up later much faster?

Not loads of points. 10 is adequate if you don't mind only being able to max two skills (to make a skill worthwhile, you generaly should put as many points into it as it will take. Splitting points between more skills than you can max means you generaly lag behind the DCs using that skill).

But your STR, CON and DEX are still important stats, and you only get one stat every 4 levels so you won't be getting all that much fast. Also, feat prerequisistes check against the base state, not including any bonuses from items, so you will need a high base STR to get the later combat feats, especialy when playing HotU.

INT has no effect on stat points, just skill points.

Stratos 06-04-2004 02:11 PM

An INT score of 13 should be sufficient to get any combat feat. Note that some of them has a DEX and STR requirement as well.

One thing about Ranger/Clerics; 3rd edition DnD is very different from 2nd edition, so while this multiclass is very good in the IWD and BG games, it's not necessarely so in NWN. If you are expecting to get all Cleric and Druid spells like you can do in BG2, you will be disappointed as both the Cleric and the Ranger class has their own spell list. It's still a viable class combination, of course, but I just wanted to point this out.

Same goes with Fighter/Wizards (Mages), good in 2nd Ed., not so much in 3rd Ed.

Jaradu 06-04-2004 05:28 PM

Hmm, so there's a lot of changes I have to get used to... I'll pick 'em up along the way, I guess. By the way, do people join your group permanently as NPCs? Bim's brother joined my fighter but he said he would leave after escaping the academy. Do they only stay for a certain time?

andrewas 06-05-2004 08:32 AM

Bim's brother only joins you for the tutorial, the henchmen in chapter 1 onwards will join you for as long as you want them to.

Attalus 06-05-2004 03:04 PM

Until you get to HotU. Bwahahaha!

Tyrion 06-07-2004 02:24 PM

and then its no more Henchmen?

andrewas 06-07-2004 04:52 PM

No, the HotU henchmen don't stay with you as long as you like, but there are always replacement henchmen available.
