I am currently nearing the end of chapter 2 with a halfling rogue who is at Level 16.

How can I put this - most of the battles are a tad... easy. Don't get me wrong, it's a great game! I guess I should turn up the difficulty, I'm playing with it set at normal. My little rogue (who has a DEX of 31 now thanks to the many great items I found - I had to ditch the leather armour and kit him out with a robe to get full advantage of the huge DEX bonus) and his buddy Grimgnaw can wade through anything. The only problems I run into is that sometimes NPCs who are supposed to surrender and give you information don't get a chance - they are taken down with one great big whack.

Just wondering what level it's possible to get to by the end of the game.

philip 02-14-2003 02:23 PM

level 20 so you're nearly there.

Granamere 02-14-2003 02:44 PM

The second expansion pack slated for later this year might increase that. The first expansion called "Shadows on Undrentide" should give us more features but so far it does not seem it will increase the level cap.

Gabrielles blades 02-14-2003 03:02 PM

sounds like you started the first chapter with more than level 1
i wasnt level 16 till the end of chapter 3, and i didnt even make it to 20 by the end of chapter 4 (only 18)
i suggest you download The Vault, equip a new character as you see fit, level it to a more appropriate level, and restart chapter 2 - dont forget plot items you may need from ch1.

Epona 02-14-2003 03:59 PM

Mmmmm, no, I started the game normally at level 1.

And I'm not going through chapter 2 again, it's taken me days! If I'm going to max out soon the game balance will be restored anyway

Gabrielles blades 02-14-2003 04:13 PM

mmm
do you use a henchman? i did, only thing i can think of to make you able to be that high in that chapter is if you dint use one.

Dreamer128 02-14-2003 04:49 PM

Level 16 at the end of Chapter2?! How did you manage that...
I have a friend who completed EVERY SINGLE SUBQUEST and killed EVERY SINGLE MONSTER in chapters one and two, and still was only level 14 when he started chapter3 !!!

Wulfere 02-17-2003 07:18 AM

Level 20 is the max for this game. As far as what others are saying about you being too high a level...lol. You started normally and you are where you should be most likely. I have a fighter who I am running through NWN and she just reached 10th level and I have just started chapter 2. Well I have cleaned out the caves and found some missing folks. Anywho...you'll run into stuff soon that will kick your butt for you. Not to worry. You also need to remember that multi-classing reduces the xp you get if you have (EDIT(nore) more than one level difference between your classes.

Example is a 5th level Fighter/1st level Theif. You would have a 20% xp penalty until you were 5/4.

well, my fighter was lv 8 in chapter 1, lv 16 in chapter 2 and lv 20 in chapter 3. I wish the level cap would be a bit higher.

and yes, I have henchman with me.err...henchwoman actually. :D

Gabrielles blades 02-17-2003 09:48 AM

guess i should have saved more often then, i died atleast a dozen times each chapter and simply respawned instead of loading since i didnt want to lose any work i had done in the chapter; didnt think it added up to that much exp lost.

Granamere 02-17-2003 02:59 PM

Wulfere do not forget the favored class execption.

Beaumanoir 02-19-2003 03:39 PM

HAHAHAHAHA! LMAO! I guess I waded through it a tad to quickly then

My wizard was level 15 (14 mage 1 fighter) in chapter 4!!! Guess its time to put the difficulty up :D I found it just right difficulty with such a low level character really but wow Never found it too hard until i got to Morag.

Wulfere 02-19-2003 04:50 PM

Very true Granamere. Thank you for reminding me. Different races have preferred classes that do not count against the XP if you have one of them as one of your multi-classes. No matter the difference in levels. For instance an Elven character gets Wizard as a Preferred Class. You can have any number of levels in another class and it still doesn't matter as far as the XP penalty goes. So a Elven Fighter 10/ Wizard 5 is immune to the 20% XP penalty.

the sauceman 02-19-2003 05:54 PM

In the beginning of Ch. 3 and my human paladin is at 17, Ive done all of the subquests and have a henchman. I can only hope against hope that the next expansions add more levels...
And I cant wait for the new expansion, Ive heard that it is more along the lines of PS:T in terms of story and play...

Jimbo 02-21-2003 09:15 AM

Huh, must have missed some quests or monsters, but only got to level 7 at the start of chapter 2 as a fighter.

Okay, I'm trying to figure out what I missed as I am a cat/fox by nature. I love to check every door, open every chest, and look in every room. I am a fighter and did all the henchmen/women quest, did all the class quests (except the Cloaktower since it is magic only), even did the little quests like Jacobs quill. Does going solo give you more experience? I have allways had Tomi with me, as he is invaluable at spoting traps and opening locks (well almost...had to level about 4 chests that he couldn't disable their traps on). I'm kinda diffrent in that I prefer to get to my higher levels quicker and enjoy the story more. It is a great story and the tales Tomi and Linu tell are worth every penny of it :D Heck, I'm restarting a rogue/fighter just to take Linu around. Maybe I missed something, but I didn't see how I could hit 8 by chapter 2 with my fighter.

arion windrider 02-22-2003 12:08 AM

im at 14 at end of chap. 3.. getting harder for experience

Dragonshadow 03-12-2003 10:35 AM

Ooooh, only 20? three more levels to go, and I'm still only in chapter 2....

Link 03-13-2003 07:42 AM

I managed to become level 19 when I finished the game. But I redid chapter 4, and became level 20 in no time (I was close to leveling up anyway).

Gnarf 03-14-2003 04:35 AM

I've heard they've decreased the amount of experience you get in the patches, I got to level 20 playing unpatched version... Started getting multiclass-penality at lvl 15 or so.

Xanthul 03-14-2003 06:34 AM

Does character class affect the xp you get ? I ask because my level 3 wizard with his pixie was getting 60 xp per "weak zombie" in the beggars nest, and my level 3 barbarian/fighter, killing them solo, got only 17 xp per kill.

Legolas 03-14-2003 07:20 AM

No, experience depends on your level, helpers and the monster, but not on class. Although an elven monk/rogue of levels 4/1, for example, would get an XP penalty compared one of levels 3/2, because that's a standard penalty for characters with multiple classes at levels more than 1 apart.

Long time no see by the way Been that busy with NWN, were you?

Xanthul 03-14-2003 08:19 AM

Hehe, yes a bit Havent played single player yet tho, ive been playing a PW

But well, on the question: my wizard was level 3, and had a familiar (which is supposed to lower the xp you get), and the barbarian/fighter was lvl 2 barb 1 fighter, so no penalty, plus anyway hes half orc, and he was going alone. I think the barb should get more xp than the wiz, but the fact is that he gets very low xp. Could someone please explain me why ?

Legolas 03-14-2003 09:09 AM

I couldn't.
What are the differences?
Choice of weapon, but by my knowledge you don't get XP from spells in this game and what weapon you use shouldn't matter.
Class, but since they're both level 3 that shouldn't matter
Skills or feats, perhaps but I don't know any who get you extra XP. Otherwise they'd be very popular all of a sudden
Race, shouldn't matter either and certainly not against zombies.
Stats, if higher INT gets more XP, then why did my mage finish two levels below my rogue?
Name, fenotype, colour and style of hair? Experience tatoos?
Picking a mature voice, or being of young age, or worshipping any of the gods of Death?
Is it the pixie of experience, by any chance?
Was it your character's gender, or clothes?

All I can think of is that one was fighting a zombie, and the other a weak zombie. Don't know how sure you are of the fact that both were weak zombies.
Time for a small experiment, I'd think.

Which PW have you been playing? (yes, this is directly related to XP of classes and the maximum achievable level No wait it's not.)

Gnarf 03-14-2003 09:24 AM

Class does actually affect experience gained. The classes that depends on resting (to memorize spells and such), gets a bonus, at least on low levels... it's said to be that way for balance, though I don't know if it's needed...

Xanthul 03-14-2003 09:30 AM

wizard gnome & pixie: 60 weak zombie, around 90 zombie
barb/fighter halforc: 17 weak zombie, around 30 zombie

im sure about the weak zombie thing, because i thought 60 was a lot of xp, and i thought lets try a solo barb, being solo should get more xp and should level up very fast... well it didnt
btw i played on Soul Forge... played many chars, Lendolin, Beren, Adhrael Lend, Seppi Lend, Zhorkgûl Lend

Legolas 03-14-2003 09:52 AM

I once tried a dwarven berserker with a large axe, and it worked okay. Then I figured "Well, this is all right, but if I were a monster, what would really scare me is a dwarf without armour (i.e. in his undies)."
So I give it a try, and nothing happens. But, I reason, "Okay, I'm fighting zombies. Undead can't really be afraid."
Oddly, everything other people said to me was to put on some clothes, or if I carried the plague or something. No scared reactions, no begging or throwing up :(
So I know exactly how you felt when you throught you would get goot XP, but didn't ;)

Can't say I'm familliar with soul forge though.
