I have a HUMAN fighter, 18/27 strength. He's wielding a long sword, but the game won't let him equip a shield. No matter what he wields, it says "two handed weapon equipped". WTF? :pissed1:

#1 Are you sure it's a longsword and not something 2 handed that looks like a longsword. (I doubt it but I felt like asking anyway.)

#2 do you have a 2 handed weapon in one of your other weapon slots?

HolyWarrior 10-31-2003 08:48 PM

I have a bow in my third slot. I'll have to try later tonight.

Firestormalpha 10-31-2003 09:08 PM

The bow is your problem. Unfortunately if there is ANY two-handed weapon in your quick slots you can't equip a shield. Stinks, don't it?

HolyWarrior 10-31-2003 11:55 PM

Yup, that was it. Put my bow away and shield works. Kinda defeats the purpose though, since I use bow so often.
Haven't played BG in over a year. I hate forgetting little things like this.

You can equip a shortbow in your quick weapon slots and still use the shield. It's only the longbow that causes the problem AFAIK.

RoSs_bg2_rox 11-01-2003 09:46 AM

nope, with a shortbow u cant equip a shield either.

Firestormalpha 11-01-2003 10:08 AM

Dace, as I've said, "ANY two handed weapons in the quick slots will do the trick".

i played through BG1 TOTSC 3 times and never used a shield once on my main character for that simple reason. i like to have the ability to use a long bow in case i have to use it from a distance to disrupt a spell when my other party members arent close enough.

I suppose you could always swap them round during combat, but thats just cheesy. I dont give my guy a bow, I just have say imoen or kivan etc. (basically whoever i've got thats good with a bow) do that job.

It's actually not cheesey since the game doesn't pause when you enter your inventory screen. So, if you spot an enemy that is in bow range, you could equip your bow and shoot at them. Then, if they are still alive by the time they get to you, you could open up your inventory, take your bow out of your quick weapons slot, and then equip your shielf in its stead for an AC boost.

In IWD2 the 3rd edition rule set changes all this and you are able to equip a sheild and sword in one slot and a bow in the other n switch like that....its way better but BG1 n 2 are way better plot wise.
