I want to know which of these is the best. If that is sorceress, i would like to know what spells to choose.

Larry_OHF 10-08-2002 01:46 PM

I would say sorcerer, since you would not need to try and locate, steal, or purchase scrolls to learn off of. They are just given to you. Easier to mangage, and saves money, IMO. As for Spells, that is dependant on playing style. Example...I do not waste time with stuff like Grease or Dominate Monster...I just get some good fire-power, like acid arrows and the such...that is just the way I play. I also hate area effect spells, because I can never convince my lackey to get outta the way in time.

I agree with Larry sorceror is definately better.

But bards are also very good and can also use scrolls if they want.

Tyrion 10-13-2002 12:11 PM

but which high level spells should I choose? There are so many good ones...and besides, a mage gets more skill points (higher int.)

Please give me some more help! It's a tough call.

Larry_OHF 10-13-2002 09:04 PM

I might be the wrong one to get advice from, because I am usually a more melee fighter than anything else. I am not a magic-using sort....and the magic that I do use are stong attacks that do big damage to one individual. I do not like spells like Power word: Kill, because if the monster you are aiming at is high level...you ain't gonna do anything to him. But if you have something like acid arrow, then that spell slaps across one monster and continues to hurt him afterward. I do not like area effect spells because that means my party has to get outta the way when they hear the old guy start chanting. I do not like to scatter my party and wait for an area effect spell to take effect. It never works with my playing style. YOU may be able to do it better, where I fail. You may know how to handle area effect spells...and I do not. It is just the way we play.
Now, summoning monsters is good, especially at high level...because then you create more targets for your enemies to work on, and less of them to hurt your true party. BUT... make sure that when you do call forth monsters that your enemies do not have the ability to turn them back on you! You would then be creating more of a nuisance for yourself.

Again, I cannot readily tell you which spells are the best, because it depends on your personal situation as to what works in your group. You mention wanting to know what high level spells are most efficient...they are all efficient to the right person. I would not be efficient with area effect spells but maybe you are. Yet, if you will tell me which level you are specifically nearing...such as...are you ready to level up to seventh level spells...then let me know, and I will better be able to look at just that list and pick out the ones that I would use personally,,,and I will tell you the reason for each.

There's a couple of good sites about Sorc spell picks:

I am an Evoker, Wizard. So far, I have had no trouble with any situation.
I choose firebased aoe spells and have hellhound(immune to fire) as my assistant. Wizard is versitile and skillfull( more int = more skills )
and lastly books are kool and charisma withers. Philisophically wizards are more saticfying.

just a thought or two.

well if you are playing on a server with rest rules then sorceress is better as you can fire of fmore spells per rest period. I found things such as chain lighting very effective. Gate is great casue you cna either summon a Balrog or use it to hold a high level planner eithee or. There are also quitea few buffs that work well for both you and your party. A combination of fire and cold spelsl are also good as few mobs are proff against both of them.

Uh personally I prefer wizards... Sure sorcerors have a few more spells, alright they have a lot more spells, but I can't have just 3 spells of the higher levels. Besides you can rest any time so does it really matter anyway? I like to be able to be able to change things depending on the situation. Of course I suppose sorcerors can do that too, since they can now remove their spells and add a new one. That was the *best* thing they could've added. Guess it's your choice...

I'm sorry to all you sorcerers out there, but wizards are SO MUCH BETTER! For one thing, their key stat is Intelligence, which gets you extra skill points. What does the sorcerers Charisma get you? An extra 100GP every time you complete a quest and colect your paycheck? Whoop-de-doo. For another, wizards sure get higher level spells a turn sooner. Sure, you cant cast them as often, but I have no problem resting for a minute between meteor storms. Finally, you get the variety of all the spells in your spellbook (which, if you diligently copy scrolls, is nearly every spell in the game). This is a huge advantage: if you know what your up against, you always have the spell there weak to. If your going up against an opponent with high spell resitance, easy, switch to enchantment spells. Need to identify something? Dump a spell memorixe identify, cast it, and replace it with somehing usefull. Hard lock to pick?Memorize cats grace four times, rest, cast them all pick the lock, and replace them. Not sure if a spell will work out well? Try it out a couple of times, then replace it with a sure thing. Sorcerers will only get to use 25% of the spells in the game, and wheres the fun in that?

Ohh, and wizards get free metamagic feats!

Buff spells like cats grace and bulls strength do not stack.
Nor do potoins with the same effects.

Just thought I would save you some time.

WIZARDS ARE BETTER!!!!!

I agree, mostly because you can rest at any time (unlike the pnp game). You could always fight one tough fight, change your spells, rest, then fight the next fight. The extra castings of a sorcerer just means that you rest less often. And you do not need to use the stone of recall to rest. Clear a room, close the door, and rest. Saves money in the early stages. The game is very generous in this way (unlike BG2, where you were likely to wake up to uninvited guests).

You gain your higher level spells a level quicker (makes a difference). The high intelligence leads to a lot more skill points (you really don't need a high charisma to persuade when you have a bunch of skill points in it). You get bonus feats on top of that.

Once you get to higher levels, where you get a lot of spells regardless of whether you are a sorcerer or wizard, the difference will be less felt. While sorcerers do have a great advantage over BG2 in being able to unlearn spells, I just think that wizards have an overall advantage over sorcerers. Now, if you wanted to play a character that is purposely limited in their range of spells (i.e. a character that uses fire magic almost exclusively), then the sorcerer is your best pick. But if you are planning on having any significant amount of versatility, then pick the wizard.

Lanthir 10-22-2002 03:23 PM

ah I see resting. well i tend to play on HCR servers so when you have to wait 15 minutes between rests all those spell do come in handy. Oh if ya take a level of paladin then a high cha is nice sinc eall the cha bonuses get added to your save throws.
