Let's see if we can find a common thread here. I'm particularly curious as to how many people there are multiclassing. Comments would be welcome too.
EDIT: The 4th option on question 4 should say Multi-Class with THREE Classes, not two classes. [ 07-12-2002, 10:36 AM: Message edited by: Memnoch ] |
I`m only played the game for 6 houers but i have an Human Female Barbarian and it looks like she is pretty good !LOL :D

I never multiclass, why? you can bash doors and chest, trap damage are laughable, you can rest or teleport at will to temple to heal up..blah blah blah..
yeah, my male human fighter does it all. with help with sharwyn of course. :D |
I have a pure Wizard. Apparently, i was the first one to choose Wizard.

Okay, but how about a poll about how MANY characters. I used the elf monk because I'm just about ready to take her to Chapter 2. I could have used the 12/2 Wizard/Fighter (elf) (Chapter 3), or the Human Ranger/Rogue 4/4 (Chapter 2 beg.) or the Sor./Bard... or Rogue/Wizard... or Rogue/Bard... or Druid... or Cleric... or Cleric/Monk... or Ranger/Rogue/Wizard...
The problem being that I'm mostly playing to experience all the classes so I can write my own modules and DM them in multiplayer. |
I used the character I just finished the game with, a human monk. I never quite made it to level 20, topped out at 19.
|
My Primary is a straight up Half Orc Barbarian.
I run about 6-7 other pcs, the most commonly used are a Female Elven Ranger, a Dwarven Priest, and my only multi-class, a Human Rogue 4 Fighter 2 (I wanted the easy feats to make my Rapier/Dagger combo as effective as possible). I will keep him a straight rogue from this point. |

Playing a human cleric, and enjoying it greatly. I rarely use potions, at least until I get so many I'm having trouble fitting them into bags. The Animal domain rocks! If I had it to do over again, I would take the Sun domain over the Healing domain (once you get tons of potions, the extra healing makes little difference).

Im playing a fighter/thief. I like not having to pay 2 points to get thief class skills and the sneak attack comes in handy. I think for my next time through I wil try a ranger/sorceror.

I am a bit pissed that they kill everything before i can manage a good backstab though. |
Lots of grass eating pointy eared elves around here.
Oh wait... that'd be me too *Runs and ducks for cover* DeSoya |
elven sorceror here. im also doing an elven fighter/wizard, and an elven ranger/rogue. i love elves, and i like the different classes, so im playing around with them. i have a 20th level elven sorceror too, that i played, and am going to use as a powerhouse of a non attainable NPC in the module that im working on.
|
Elven sorceress here Choosing the panther is great, cos it gets many sneak attacks and certainly has saved me more than a couple of times :D The only catch is every so often, I have to rest to get those spells back...
|
at first i resorted to powergaming, playing a ranger/fighter and trying to maximize my stats. I deleted him anc started over with a ranger/ rogue because i think that these classes compliment each other and offer good roleplaying possibilities
|
Hmmmm...I'm currently playing a single class Paladin (human, although it's my understanding that 3ed allows other races). It seemed like an easy class (it's fighterish, high charisma and all)...and his strength is pretty sick (16 + 3 for the upgraded barbarian amulet and +2 for the gauntlets of ogre power and +3 for the belt of giant strength I found...so he's at, um, 24 :) )...
I plan on trying out either a dwarven fighter (something's just right about a dwarf and an axe)...or else a sorceror or something like that (obviously not dwarven tho) |
Playying a 10th level Druid/ 4th level Rouge is lots of fun and very versatile but not too challenging so far as i'm in Luskan chapter two. I have a henchman(the Barbarian), my animal companion,(10th level Bear and a summoned animal(dire tiger) We are a squad of four.
I took enough levels of thief to push the trap/lock stats over 40 natural with a few item I collected. I hate not being able to get in a chest and being zapped by traps so I took just enough thief to still rise fairly high as a druid. I'm pleasantly suprised by the power of the druid, very versatile.I've pushed my dex up to 26 with items and took wisdom points up to 18 so far when I 4-leveled so I have a decent AC and access to high spells. I opted for dual welding and use a double sword. That makes this druid unafraid and prepared to enter melee just after I rain down one, two, three, call lightining spells, and one more Maximized to boot if they are still standing, upon some poor monster's ass. Ah, Call Lightning. That spell will destroy chests and other destructable placeables nearby as well as fry adversaries, very cool!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anyway when I voted, Druid had like 3%, so I figured I would share why I think it is very kick ass! |
Great Poll! And after viewing the results, all I have to say is so much for Rangers "sucking" as most people were saying since the 3rd edition rules were rolled out. Interesting too that nobody really likes using non-human-like characters (i.e. dwarves, halfings, gnomes, etc.)
|
Well I am a Paladin.. mwehehehe Being a fighter was kind of boring...
|
Interesting results. The ranger seems to be far and away the winner. I guess free Ambidexterity and Two Weapon Fighting as well as decent Stealth and some clerical spells makes him a good all-round character - almost like 60% fighter/20% rogue/10% cleric. The flexibility of being able to select cross-class skills means you can have a ranger who is very stealthy, can pick locks and detect traps, but not be such a wuss in a fight as a rogue. Throw in a level of Rogue to get the Sneak Attack feat and Barbarian to get Rage, Fast Movement and Uncanny Dodge (all three classes complement each other - they are more like shock troopers than tanks and have Dexterity as a key attribute) and you've got a really well rounded character. Like mine - Rogue1/Ranger6/Barbarian1 so far. :D

*shudders* an elf barbain? thats......unthinkable...lol. Elves make the greatest rangers, imo.

When you think elf you're probably thinking of the typical Ar'Tel-Quessir from Evermeet, Evereska or what was once Myth Drannor - the ones most involved in the Retreat. But there are also many communities of green and copper elves (also known as wood and wild elves or Sy-Tel-Quessir) living deep in the forest, who do not even recognize the rule of Amlaruil of Evermeet. I think they would make great barbarians and rangers - one with the wild, living with nature, away from civilization and all that. Don't think of barbarian as your typical raging half-orc northerner. Think outside the square. |
I'm roleplaying a Drow Paladin(Sword and shield style, worshipper of Eilistraee). He's really a great char.

as hard as it is to start with a sorcerer (especially if you don't use a 'tank' henchman; i never used anyone except linu), by the end of the game these guys can unleash just massive amounts of damage.
the first point when it get's a lot easier is level 10, when you can get animate dead - skeleton chieftins are awesome companions at that point in the game. it gets even better later with summon creature VII and higher which summon an elemental. and for the tougher fights there's the mighty mordenkeinen's sword. and if you run into a spell resistant enemy you can use tenser's transformation or even shapechange (i'm kinda sorry i didn't give this spell a try, it says you can turn into a dragon!) and just melee it out. but the main strength of the sorcerer are the offensive spells - cone of cold and ice storm are very effective for their level, especially against groups of enemies, just watch out for your henchman/familiar/summon. chain lightning and horrid wilting get rid of this problem though. and then there's meteor swarm and of course time stop . combination of these two spells made two of the near-end 'boss' fights a joke. the two guardians before the inner sanctum in the end - i just stood between them, timestoped and rained meteors on them, than finished with two chain lightnings and it was over. the wizard responsible for the plague you fight a little earlier, he starts the battle with a time stop and casts some pathetic spells during it. i immediately showed him how it's done . time stop, three meteor swarms and a chain lightning, his 'immortality' wasn't all that impressive... and the dragons in general were a joke; except for once when i accidently walked into the red dragons breath they never even touched me. so from my experience with the sorcerer and from what i've read on this and other forums about melee fighting charecters, it seems to me that spellcasters have an easier time in the big 'boss' battles. i really recommend the sorcerer . |

</font>
yeah sorry, it just goes against the grain... an elf barbaian. hmm, from the discriptions on the elf race... its kinda hard to picture elves dressed in fur loinclothes... kinda scary too. hehe. yeah but I get ur point., I'll try not to sterotypicalis. lol, if thats even a word... heh, with 'wizards' as the 'recomened' class for elves... barabains seem a little savage... lol. |
Um there are NO BARDS? Actually it't not surprising, bards seem like a big "support" class and in a game where you are basically solo.. any multiplayers trying the bard? Why not?

I, too, am playing the game through as a ranger. As for the reason so many of us are playing ranger, let's be honest here. Say as much as you want about "oh, the free ambidexterity and two-weapon fighting is great," which they are. But the real reason most of us are playing ranger, honestly, is because of Drizzt. I decided to play ranger when the game came out, even though I usually play as a paladin. I found myself weapon focusing on scimitar (go figure, eh?). I then realized I wanted to play a game through as a Drizzt clone, more or less. I'll wager to say that's why most of us are rangers. And yes, I have the panther as an animal companion. They say imitation is the highest form of flattery. LOL

I have been playing Rangers longer than Mr. Slavatore has been writing books....probably since before he graduated Highschool I like the ethos of the class. I don't play a drow but I prefer Half-elf only in NWN do I make the exception of full elf because 3rd edition kind of neutered the half-elf. Unlike Drizzzt my elf is a Bow nut and is very very good with his bow </font> [ 07-14-2002, 05:31 AM: Message edited by: MagiK ] |
I played ranger in BG1... all the way tho, it was the first class I picked, fell in love with it and it kinda stuck, I hadn't even HEARD of drizzit 'til I met him. (fighting some gnolls, go figure) I didnt know then he was a ranger either...
|
I'm a Rogue. They can do it all in one fashion or another. Stealth, fight, magic. I have muti-classed with a fighter for the purpose of weapon specialization. I expect to end the game with a 17th level Rogue/3rd Fighter. My only regret is having to kill something in-order to level up. I would much rather sleath and steal and kill only when necessary or appropriate. I'll play the game that way if I can max out XP before the game ends.
|
no ranger here :D
will be a Level 5 Thief / Level 15 Barbarian / Half Orc!!! well i know humans (feat bonus) or dwarves (stat bones) are better chars but the arn't looking so good :D |
Regarding elven rangers, we can thank LOTR for that one, too...
I play Dark Age of Camelot, as well, which only allows each name to be used once per server. If I had a $1 for each variation of Legolas I saw on my realm, my server alone my student loan payments would be done with. Legohlas, Leggolas, Legalas... you get the picture. The only one I liked: Legolamb Gyro. |
I'm playing a half-elven paladin at the moment. In retrospect, I wish I'd started him out as a fighter, done 4 levels for feats and weapon specialization, and then turned him into a paladin.
But oh well. |
Multi classing is for weak fools. Any who cannot excel at a class is a victim.....probably my next
