i just killed my first dragon.(winter fang) looked like a blue or white dragon. but was an ice dragon weak in all accounts. damn thing was half dead before it even did its first attack.the dragon looks really cool and its breath attacks even looked cool. but it did its breath weapon twice. its spends its first half of its exsistance casting some spells on itself. then it starts mocking you while its getting its tail kicked. then it finally decides that now thats its almost dead maybe it should go attack.

well when all was said and done i lost my npc and i lost a minor 26 HP. the dragon gave a big 420 xp.i was just hoping that it woulda put out a bigger fight.all in all for me it was a let down for what should have been a tough fight. i just hope the balor lord puts out a better fight.

Kakero 07-04-2002 11:15 AM

I'm playing as a dwarven fighter and I managed to kill Belial (Didn't cast PFE just to see if I could take him) Had to use buffing potions but did it first try.

I'm in Chap3 atm and I found dragons far too easy - the first time I came across one (the green one with the eggs) I saved and attacked it just to see how difficult it would be and was fully let down, I didn't even need to use potions!

I'm playing on Hardcore Rules but am thinking that if I decide to go through again I might up it to the hardest setting? Anyone else finding it too easy?

theifprowess 07-05-2002 04:21 AM

yes i killed the green dragon as well even though shes a good dragon. the blue one is by far the easiest. hell you dont even need to take a swing at it and it dies.i defeated the balor lord also wasnt as hard as i thought either. i am just now on act 4.

Kakero 07-05-2002 04:47 AM

strange though, in the cave, if you let the dragon chase you to outside the cave, he will follow you outside but can't enter the cave anymore. ;)

Gabrielles blades 07-05-2002 04:58 AM

ive played through the game fully twice now
and not once did a dragon i attacked exibit the behavior you described

most of the dragons seem to say a bunch of words then then claw me till they or i die

try meleeing the red dragon; hes a real tuffy; my orc with 340 hit points had to flee once to heal before he could finish him off; my rogue with 80 hit points had to run around shooting arrows at it for a loong time.

replaying as a sorcerer now; am only at ch1 as yet tho; and good lord is it tough to not die when you only have 7 hit points.

Calaethis Dragonsbane 07-05-2002 05:45 AM

Dragon? where? tell me... then I can start living up to my 'second name' *grins* only evil dragons tho. the dragons in NWN are supposed to be harder then in SOA/TOB. is this true? I hope so... I got tired of whooping firkagg..

Downunda 07-05-2002 06:21 AM

I found the dragons incredibly easy, as I said in my previous post I am on the hardcore setting and haven't had to reload any of the fights against dragons, I found some of the fights against the fire giants harder than the dragons (only when there's a whole heap of them giving my dwarf a beatdown)

Calaethis Dragonsbane 07-05-2002 06:26 AM

*sighs* a pity... someone make a modual for killing dragons, call it 'Dragon Hunt' or some such...

Deathcow 07-05-2002 06:36 AM

at least we CAN make modules now....im still getting over how cool that is...

think about it, you can make one REALLY tough dragon, or try to fight like 4 at once (oldest dragon alive, and stumbling into a nest of dragons with a mommy and some kids)

just some random ideas...the toolset is great

Nonsico 07-05-2002 11:44 AM

I found dragons rather unimpressive myself, i killed the red and golden dragons because they got stuck and i shot them up with my bow and they couldent touch me.... i reloaded and tried like 5 times same stupid dragon every time... though meleeing them is very tough

Grinch 07-05-2002 06:52 PM

Well,my 15th level dwarf fighter is having a heck of a time fighting the dragon (the Ice one). The only thing I have on hand that seems to do damage is Angurvadel, but it's not enough, and not often enough. Anyone have asuggestion for me on this.Tried potions, and die, tried using Tomi w/ranged weapons and died. Beginning to think I need a better weapon to get the job done. What's astral longsword? It's one the few things I have the stuff for.

Lady Blue03 07-05-2002 09:28 PM

But i thought the Angurvadel was supposed to b like the best sword in the game?? I have blade of the gladiator and thats awesome. Whre is that sword anyway? Benn keepin my ete out for it

Grinch 07-05-2002 09:40 PM

I think I found it in Luskan, in one the High Captain's hideouts. It's a nice little flaming sword, but I really think an axe suits a dwarf better. Have the +2 greataxe that delivers 1D6 acid damage, but it just doesn't seem to touch that rotten dragon, and I chose improved critical on that one too.

Kakero 07-06-2002 01:31 AM

stupid dragon! I let the dragon follow me up to the cave mouth and guess what? he got himself stuck into a chest. needless to say I and sharwyn just shoot him with my arrows far away.

theifprowess 07-06-2002 05:02 AM

well i know this is kinda a spoiler for those who havent got to the end of the game here but towards the end there are the 2 dragons you have to fight and get keys off their bodies. i took them down with my lvl 20 barb with 406 hp(max btw)you can click on the dragon and then examine. it will tell you the difficulty of what your fighting. seriously they both said moderate.1 level above effortless.needless to say they went down with ease and i didnt loss more than 200 hp.on a critical with my stonefire axe+2 i hit usually anywhere from 64-100(i think 100 is max)regular attacks deal 22-40.

Evergreene 07-11-2002 03:00 PM

I have encountered my first dragon in NWN. It is an ice dragon in the Snow Globe cave. Where is the Green Dragon? I am having a tough time killing this thing. I am a level 16 or 17 cleric, have summoned a high level water elemental, am using Tomi the NPC on ranged attack (normally he is on melee). I am using speed, aid, and bless, and can only get as far as injured on the dragon before we are all dead.

Are you guys using cheese tactics? (such as teleporting out, healing and re-buffing, then porting back in to an injured dragon? He seems totally magic resistant, takes very little of the damage we do, ranged or melee. Perhaps i am allowing him to cast his own magic resistance before my nuke is landing? Should i dispell the dragon? what types of bolts are good for him? ( i use crossbow)

Calaethis Dragonsbane 07-11-2002 03:03 PM

I killed that dragon in the snow globe today. stupid creature. was pethetic. even firkaag put up a better fight. that stupid henceman of mine, Linu got herself killed yet again... shes begining to annoy me. she KILLED some stupid NPCs, that were fighting some dire tigers AFTER the tigers had been defeated, she took my allignment DOWN. *grumbles*

ratchild 07-11-2002 05:38 PM

Hmmmm, i'm finding the dragons in NWN to be much harder to defeat than in SoA, and ToB. As far as them not using anything but melee attacks, the latest patch fixes that. The only dragon i'd had problems with was klauth, and i meleed that one with my druid/ranger w/o any minions, as the fire breath killed them all rather quickly =)

Greadius 07-11-2002 06:15 PM

Glad this game wasn't designed for uber-only players. The dragons aren't incredibally tough but they're no walk in the park.
First of all, I always melee. Ranged weapons are for wusses and the slow. Unfortunately I don't have a 20th level barbarian with maximum hit points...

Evergreene, the only reason I defeated the Ice dragon was because Linu was wise enough to cast Harm on it for 150HP's... and then I went on a 2 round, 10 swing missing streak before finally bringing it down and I was near death (evasion saved me from the breath weapon in the last round too, I was so proud :D )
So, my advice is to charge up a nice harm spell, sneak up (or trounce up) on to it, and WHACK! it with that red glow.

AndyG 07-11-2002 06:36 PM

Those of you who are struggling with the dragon in the Snow Glove, you did repair the amulet, right? If not, give that a try...

My monk had an easy time with most of the dragons. The white went down real easy. The green and blue took a while, but no real problem. Klauth was tough, but I didn't need to run away and heal or anything. Those two corrupted dragons were tough as well, but again, I got them without major difficulty. I found the Old One Warriors a lot harder than those dragons.

P.S. The green dragon is actually evil. If you ask Gorgotha about other dragons in the area, she'll tell you about her.

The only dragon I had a hard time with was Klauth.I melee with my elvan ranger level 10 ranger 4 fighter and Tomi.It took me an hour!? Some people here are saying it was easy and never hardly had to even heal themselves!!I'm wearing studded leather+3 armor and some cold sword sometimes a whole round and I only will do 4or 5 damage!??And my dex is high and str.is over 20 with an ogre belt..So what am I doing wrong!?..On to chap 4

Evergreene 07-11-2002 08:36 PM

I am going to try to "repair the amulet" first.. i eventually did kill the dragon, but crashed before saving when i zoned out LOL. I ended up keeping it at bay with summoned pets, and just range hitting it.

Actually the best (long) sword I found in the game was an Astral Sword +2 which was made via a Long Sword +3 and a diamond. It does extra sonic damage of 1-10, plus it does the nifty animition of a sound pulse ring that expands when you hit monsters and goes BOOM. Also very handy with busting open chests, usually opens them with just one hit.

Possibly one of three things:
1. You were relatively low level for that encounter compared to most people here.
2. You don't play the game to maximize your combat effectiveness.
3. You're telling the truth.

Of course, all of them are irrelavent if you're having fun :D

My favorite weapon. Little Boomer :D
Goes great with the +2 Storm Hammer (lightning) in the off hand. Get a little thunderstorm action going.

Kakero 07-12-2002 03:11 AM

also, try to get an item that can give you constant haste spell. you'll notice this will make a huge difference.

Evergreene 07-12-2002 02:25 PM

OMG it is a TOTALLY different fight!!
Before i had "fixed the amulet" i went in and attacked the dragon neutral, he was about 99% magic resistant, REALLY tough and when i killed him i got like 450exp. Then, not realizing he would be "red" after fixing the amulet, i went right in to him WITHOUT buffs, (on a save game of course) i cast them right there after the fighting began, but he was A CINCH! I only got about 350 exp and we took almost no damage! I did not even have the fixed amulet equipped, because i use a wisdom amulet and was afraid i would lose spells.

Evergreene 07-12-2002 02:27 PM

Grinch- did you fix the amulet first? try it! im telling you it was a totally different fight!!

AndyG 07-12-2002 11:26 PM

John, for that fight with Klauth, did you kill the blue dragon and give Klauth the orb? That will cut the time for the fight down a lot. It doesn't make him easier to hit or damage, but it takes away about 80% of his hit points.

Kakero 07-13-2002 01:39 AM

I didn't do that, but still klauth was easy. :D

Evergreene 07-13-2002 08:47 AM

Wow killed klauth.. he was TOUGH even with having eaten the dead dragon globe. I had to reload about 6 times! I got him to nearly dead then something. I really had to bring out my top spells to bring him down, and ended up using almost everything i had! Level 18 cleric!

AndyG 07-13-2002 12:40 PM

Well, Klauth is an ancient red dragon. It should take everything you've got to beat him.

Kakero 07-13-2002 07:20 PM

then how about fighting two dragons at the same time on chapter 4? ;)

AndyG 07-13-2002 07:37 PM

Contains some spoilers....

If you're not a true D&D addict, you may not know the difficulty ratings of dragons. They are :

Good Evil
---- ----
Brass White
Copper Green
Bronze Black
Silver Blue
Gold Red

So, fighting a corrupted Copper and corrupted Silver should be tough, but fighting a Red should be really tough. There were also age rankings, with the older dragons being stronger. We never really know how old those two guardian dragons are. If they've been in stasis with Morag, they may not be that old... Klauth is as ancient as they get.

This all may have changed some in D&D 3rd edition, I haven't played much since first edition.

Nerull 07-14-2002 05:25 PM

How do you fix the amulet? I found it after I killed him. In fact, I was VERY disappointed with the ease of that fight. Not one person in the party lost a single hit point, and we had him down to Badly Injured before I decided to cast Harm on him. I guess Gating in a Balor makes a difference, but that much? I was shocked at how tiny the dragon was! I didn't know if I wanted to fight it or sit it on my lap and pet it! ;) And we only got 272xp for him. I buffed like crazy for the fight, but still I'd expect a much harder fight from a dragon!
