Please use this thread to report any bugs you may find, so it's easier for everyone to address them. Try and avoid spoilers in this thread if possible, or put a warning.

Don't forget to let us know what system you're using (processor, videocard, RAM, etc - you know the drill).

When replying to someone's bug question please quote which bug you have found a solution for, to make it easier for the rest of us to follow. Avoid pyramid quotes, though.

The less posts we have on this thread the better - for obvious reasons.

I'm posting some tips from Bio on how to make the game work more smoothly:

1.01 How do I install Neverwinter Nights? (Back to Top)

To install NEVERWINTER NIGHTS just insert the NEVERWINTER NIGHTS INSTALL DISK 1 into your CD-ROM drive and follow the on-screen prompts to install the game.

If the AutoPlay screen does not automatically appear after inserting the NEVERWINTER NIGHTS CD Install Disk 1 into your CD-ROM drive, follow these steps:

1. Close all running programs.
2. Ensure that the NEVERWINTER NIGHTS CD Install Disk 1 is in your CD-ROM drive.
3. Double-click My Computer on your desktop.
4. Double-click the CD-ROM icon.
5. Double-click on the Setup.exe icon to launch the installer.
6. Follow the on-screen instructions to launch the game.

Note: you do NOT need to install GameSpy Arcade to play Neverwinter Nights on the Internet.

After installing the game, you will be offered the choice to view the readme or play the game. The readme is a text file, which lists additions to the manual since printing.

1.02 How can I improve gameplay performance? (Back to Top)

The installer automatically detects the type of system you have and configures your option settings for optimal gameplay when you first install. You can adjust the option settings later but if you turn up your options this may cause slowdowns in gameplay if you are running on less than a recommended system (see System Requirements).

Defragging your hard drive makes saving the game much faster - we recommend you defrag your hard drive prior to installing and occasionally between play sessions.

If you are experiencing slowdowns or poor performance, we recommend that you try turning down Options settings such as:

(Video Options) Graphics quality
(Video Options) Creature shadow detail
(Video Options) Enable environment shadows
(Video Advanced Options) Grass
(Video Advanced Options) Creature wind
(Video Advanced Options) Number of dynamic lights
(Video Advanced Options) Shadow casting lights
(Video Advanced Options) Anti aliasing
(Video Advanced Options) Texture animations
(Video Advanced Options) Environment mapping
(Video Advanced Options) Visual effects high

Certain options such as shiny water, dynamic lighting, and anti aliasing may only be available on the recommended video cards and higher.

A recommended system will be able to play the game with most of the advanced options turned on while a minimum spec system may require some of these options to be turned off.

1.03 How can I play through a Firewall? (Back to Top)

If you are trying to play through a firewall of some sort, here is some information for you to help you get connected. Neverwinter Nights uses UDP, not TCP for its connections. If you think that your firewall is preventing you from connecting to the game servers, please make sure that the following ports are open:

Ports 5120 through 5300
If you are wanting to make sure that your NAT is set up to allow the game to play here are some details.

Outgoing packets

Source port: 5120-5129
Destination port: 5121-5300
Incoming packets

Source port: 5121-5300
Destination port: 5120-5129
On the Game Client side, here are some changes to make things go better. Go to your nwnplayer.ini file in your Neverwinter Nights install directory, and find the following section:

[Profile]
Client Port=XXXX

Our suggestion is to change XXXX to 5120.

1.04 How do I manually uninstall Neverwinter Nights? (Back to Top)

If you need to manually uninstall Neverwinter Nights, follow these steps:

1. Delete the folder where the game was installed
2. Remove the entry from the start menu
3. Remove the following Windows Registry key using RegEdit:

MyComputer \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \Microsoft \Windows \CurrentVersion \Uninstall \{7C503E58-B2BC-11D5-978A-0050BA84F5F7}

4. Remove the following Windows Registry key using RegEdit:

MyComputer \HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \SOFTWARE \BioWare \NWN \Neverwinter

5. Remove the hidden folder:

C: \Program Files \InstallShield Installation Information \{7C503E58-B2BC-11D5-978A-0050BA84F5F7}

(where C: is the drive on your system with the Program Files folder)

At this point, there should be no traces of the game on the system.

It seemed alot of people were having problems with the cursor blinking and disappearing, and then Lord of Alcohol posted this on another thread here to try the following...

Quote:

one guy had it solved by changing the setting for enable hardware mouse to 0 in nwn.ini
I tried it, and it worked without any trouble. I played for about 2 hours yesterday after doing so, and found no negative reprecussions to doing this.

My game freezes right after I start the first conversation. I have a HP Pavilion with a Pentium III, 866 MHz, 256 meg of RAM,37.2 gig of HD, and a 16x CD-ROM, with Windows Me.

KAR_MOD1 06-21-2002 08:51 PM

this is a bug w/ the npc ai. while in beggar's nest tomi got stuck behind a door I couldnt open "because it was locked and barred from the other side" i tried walking around but he didnt follow me.. i searched the town for at least 15 minutes looking for him (didnt know at the time). and i saw him behind the door but he couldnt get out! fortunatly when i went into an area (that requires loading) he was right next to my side, ready to do my bidding.

Just to let people know that you can find info and download links to a patch by clicking here.

Djinn Raffo 06-22-2002 03:14 PM

Here is something that has happened to me that makes me sad.

Ok i installed and ran the autoupdate. Then start the game. The start up scene witht the Bioware logo and Atari comes on and then i watch that fight scene at the start...

Then i get the main menu but the colors on the background are all buzzed out kind of and the mouse cursor looks like its in safe mode colors and cant even tell its a hand... So i get out and start it again.

This time i get the Atari and the Bioware and then the mouse cursor looks like it should but that fight scene i cant see...its just the music and black screen. Press esc, enter, all that... alt + tabbed out of it and shut it off from outside...

Reboot, start it again...this time the same thing except instead of black screen its white...im trying to get that file planet patch...
but i dont know what the prob is...but i dont like it one bit!

Im going to try that bit that Lord of Alcohol posted! Cheers! I hope it resolves it! Will return to tell if it does or not!

Djinn Raffo 06-22-2002 03:28 PM

I dont think it worked! :( i still get that white screen...im at the main menu because i clicked the mouse button and there seemed to be a button underneath...arg!

EDIT!

right after i posted this i alt-tabbed back in and im there! I can see the screen but the mouse is acting wonky..its like there is two cursors... mine that moves around at normal speed...and another jumping along following..is kind of annoying tracers..i might try to edit back that nwn.ini but im going to try like this and create a character hehehe! Am pumped! :D

EDIT AGAIN!

im going to buy a new stick of ram!

Djinn, I haven't got it yet so I don't know if this will help you, but give it a go anyway.

Djinn Raffo 06-22-2002 06:02 PM

Thanks Memnoch! I'll give it a go for sure..

while i was out getting some more ram i also picked up a new vid card...a rocket! so i should be in fine form..

Thanks again!

Morgeruat 06-22-2002 09:26 PM

hmm, I tried loading the game I get through the opening intro movies, and then either a black screen with nothing, a black screen with the cursor, or a white screen with the cursor, it worked fine last night and I hadn't changed any settings when it started acting up, and it's only gotten worse and worse, any ideas, I got the latest video card patch, I'm running a P3 500, 512MB Ram, with a 16MB tnt card running win ME... I'm going nuts here trying to figure this out, I also have the latest game patch.

theifprowess 06-24-2002 04:25 AM

only bug i had was once trying to find desharik or whatever his name was in the dungeon, after getting the four items. well walking thru the dungeon my char had a glitch or something and ended up on top of the wall inbetween rooms. and unfortunately its not like MW where you can type in your console "fixme" just god thing i had saved not to far before. just reloaded. other than that no problems at all

Zateel 06-24-2002 10:18 AM

Not really a bug, but I notice that if you play about twelve hours in a row (can't help it) that the game gets much slower. Actually, I probably exited and restarted three times in there to get my resources back. But, I only have 128 megs.

For this it will cost you 50 gold unless you walk back. When you get stuck just use your handy dandy rock of recall and teleport back to the temple. When you use the gate to return, it should plop you down in the nearest good space. Worked for me when I got stuck in a wall.

Kraki 06-24-2002 06:45 PM

well i'm getting kind of frustrated here. i've installed NWN and when i run it i get the intor movies, then nothing. if I <alt-tab> out then back in i get the menu but it moves incredibly slow. after i click it takes a few seconds to do anything.. i'm running a 1.3gHz 256MB RAM with a 64MB Video card... and it does with on every video seting. any ideas? thanks

that might be your vid card over heating. FI it over heats it slows down to cool off. I use to have that problem and I added an additional fan to cool things off.

Ok I have found two what i think are bugs. In port last all the talk choices are slow to come up. Wha tis odd is it only happens to me in that zone
In Mutamin dugeon in a room filled with doors and trap chests tomi goes into a loop saying tha the disarmed the traps but they still sow red in additon my pc even if ordered to disarm the traps doesn't move to do so. the bright spot is I ahd enough hp to trip the traps and live had to heal inbetween each one though

zlandar 06-24-2002 11:58 PM

I haven't been able to pick the spell penetration feat so far during the game. Everyone time I select the feat during level up, on the summary screen it says "(none)" under feats and won't let me click ok, forcing me to cancel.

MagiK 06-25-2002 08:23 PM

A couple of apparent bugs...any thoughts would be appreciated.

1. Im an 8th level Ranger and have chosen A Panther for my animal companion, but after having used this skill successfully several times, I now can no longer summon the creature, even after leveling up and reselecting. My radial menu shows that I have one use for the summons but it is greyed out..and never comes back no matter how many times I rest or level up.

2. Bug #2 is that occasionally I have noticed my quick save game reverting to an older one. It happens infrequently but is very annoying when I have to go back to my last full save...I do both frequently now.

I dont have answers but some thoughts...

Bug #1 Is you ranger wearing armor that would restrict using his abilities ( if that applies under 3rd ed. rules) or has he had an alignment shift away from good? ( kill any commoners?) or a level drain?

Also what happens when you assign the animal summons to a hotkey?

My druid is eighth level and I have encountered no bugs with her Animal companion.

Bug#2 And I thought I just forgot to save!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am now very aware of this, as I have fallen prey to it twice, Both times I thought I was just absentminded about Q-saving!!!!!! Or are you just absent-minded sometime too ? ;)

Goodluck with your animal companion!

Lanthir 06-25-2002 10:49 PM

check your armor just take it off and see what happens you might have disabled your ranger skills with the type of armor you have. Aslo i hada problem once when I zoned and my bear did nto It loked to me like i had no bear with me but ti woudl nto let me cast for another one. I zoned back and there he was he had got stuck in awall.

DeSoya 06-26-2002 01:14 AM

Okay then....
I'm having a strange problem. I'm playing an elven fighter mage. He was a ninth level fighter and I added one level of wizard when I reached tenth. All it gave me was 3 skill pts, 3 hps, and the ability to summon a familiar. I cannot cast any spells. I can't hot key them, I can't pick them off of the radial menu. They do not appear there so I can't choose them for either on the fly casting or hotkeying. I've tried: Taking off my armor (it's leather, 10% failure chance). Restarting. Releveling. Reloading a bunch. Clicking like a starcraft addict on crack..... But still... No spells.

Any suggestions?

DeSoya

P.S. My INT is 13 so no problems there.

Have you scribed scrolls in your spellbook? I have playyed a NWN mage yet so I dont know if that how 3ed spell learning works, but you may have to scribe some scrolls into your book before you can select them.....Click the spell icon on the top right menu and see what you've got. If you do have spells their you may just hafta memorize them? Or you know all this and Im just running my mouth?

Kraki 06-26-2002 10:33 AM

ok, i fixed my last problem, it did turn out that my video drivers were not up to date, but now i have another frustrating problem... now i've played the game for nearly 15 hours, but now it locks up... this is the ONLY game i've played on my computer that actually makes my computer restart. and it doesn't matter if i'm playing an existing character or starting a new one.. any ideas?

First off, thanks for the help, to you and Chewie.
When you lost your Bear Lanthir, did you still have his icon under yours? Mine is gone, I assumed he had been killed in a wild fight, and haven't seen him since, nor have I been able to summon him. As for armour, I stripped the character naked to see if thatw as the case, I am running this ranger with Leather +1 because I want to take full advantage of my 22 Dexterity. Well thanks again, and Ill try the hot key thing, Ive gone into Chapter two and lost my panther in Chapter 1 so I can't go back and look for him :(

I'll ask Bioware about this too.

Okay... Problem seems to be fixed. I did everything at once (restart, reload and relevel) and it let me memorize my spells. Chances are that it was a PEPCAK error and I wasn't clicking on the memorize button thingy.

I can play for several days then neither of two saved games will load, after this happens Starting up NWN causes an invalid page fault in Windows 98.After that NWN has to be reinstalled before you can begin a new game(the old saved games are still not loading). I plan to format this computer tomorrow and reinstall Windows 98,unless someone else thinks installing Windows 2000 would work better? I think this is a real bug,but by formatting and reinstalling I think I will reduce the chance that there is an error in my system software. It sure is getting tiresome when I get all the way to chap 2 and then I have to start all over again.

Ass Gremlin 06-27-2002 02:20 AM

i dont know if this is a bug or i didn't download something right but at the top of the host tower were aribeth is supposta take her vow to maugrim they just sit there and stare at each other.

WOLFGIR 06-27-2002 04:17 AM

Magik, you might do well in asking Bioware about the Anmal companion bug.
In 3:Ed all the virtual feet are depending on armour type, ie, ambidextrious, two weapon fighting, imp two weapon fighting. The rest is just penalties to your DEX, movement and skills. So your magic and other abilities are not hindered by armour. At least in the 3:ed. So since I DON`T have the game I can only respond to what it should be since they said this would be so in the FAQ. Good luck in finding the solution..

RANTING MODE! IT`S DELAYED HERE!!! ARRRRGH!!!! I will definetely make an evil cleric sorcerer!!!

That could be possible, but if I exit the game and restart the speed is back up. If it were a heat problem I would think the delay would still affect the game. Regardless, I need a new videocard.

I also wanted to confirm the bug about quicksaves. On *SEVERAL* occasions I have tried to load a quicksave only to find it was a much older save than I belived it to be. I had dismissed it as mental fatigue from the long playing hours, or perhaps a gas leak in my house causing a little dain bramage. So to anyone reading...

REGULARLY SAVE YOUR GAME IN A SLOT OTHER THAN QUICKSAVE

Memnoch 06-27-2002 09:22 AM

Thanks for everyone's efforts in trying to keep all the info to this thread - it helps everyone (both people with problems and people with the solutions to those problems).

Micah Foehammer 06-28-2002 04:43 PM

Anyone have any luck getting NWN to run under Win98 with a voodoo5 5500???

I've get plenty of ram (512 megs) and processor is plenty fast but I can't select any other gender beside male or any race beside human.

*sigh*

ratchild 06-28-2002 05:34 PM

Hmmm.... not sure about it working on a Voodoo card. Also, make sure you have the latest version of win98, to be sure it can properly utilise your RAM. Early versions could not utilize more than 256 properly, and in some cases having more would actually degrade performance.

Micah Foehammer 06-28-2002 06:04 PM

According to infogrames tech support, it WON'T run on a voodoo5 card or anything voodoo card for that matter. The voodoo cards (even the NEWEST ones) are NOT opengl 1.2 compliant. :(

MagiK 06-28-2002 10:46 PM

I found a work around for the broken Animal Companion summmon icon in the radial menue. I cannot summon him from the radial, but if I right click a quick slot and put the summon animal companion Icon there, it works.....so in short...radial menu NO, Quick slot..YES!

Micah Foehammer 06-29-2002 01:08 AM

Workaround for the voodoo 5:

This won't solve ALL the problems (like opening movies NOT playing) but it did solve a BUNCH of problems.

Go to your nwn.ini file
Scroll down until you find a line that says:

Enable HardwareMouse=1

Change this to

Enable HardwareMouse=0

Save the .ini file. VOILA!!! The disappearing mouse icon now reappears and you should be able to create a character and play.

Djinn Raffo 06-29-2002 03:10 AM

hehe...one thing that happened to me which was not a bug but was very annoying...

I got a little to close to a door that was permanently locked and i spun the camera around 180 degrees zoomed out so i was obscured by the building...when i spun back i was inside the locked door and i couldnt get back out and their was nothing back there...i had to reload!

Katherine 06-29-2002 08:18 AM

I have a problem with my logitech optical mouse. The scroll wheel does not function in the game when I scroll. If I click the scroll wheel down to move the camera, the NWN session minimizes. I've not seen a solution for this anywhere. Is anyone else experiencing it?

I even updated my logitech drivers and still get the issue.

Kat

Memnoch 06-30-2002 12:15 PM

Just bumping this up.

Kakero 06-30-2002 01:07 PM

I don't know whether this is a bug but sometimes when I'm playing the game, the computer will suddenly reboot itself.

I got the same problem too with morrowind. strange though it never happen to me on other games, only these two I see.

There are a special patch for the Logitech mice on Logitechs homepage. Download it, zip it up and run it. After that it should work out some flaws with the scroll wheel in games.

Oki, I can´t find it now since they have changed their webpage.. :S

Haha found it! :D

http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm?pa...4&languageid=1

It should lead to a webapge with a registry patch for mice and gamers! :D
Mouse Registry File for GAMERS, is the name for it. Look for it under any downloadable mice drivers! :D
