JOE030303 11-29-2003 01:24 PM

does anyone know how to get this game to work on xp?

bsftcs 11-29-2003 02:31 PM

Welcome to the board, JOE030303.

The game should run on XP, although I have heard of some minor problems. I believe the workarounds for the problems concerning XP are elaborately dealt with in the "Tech Tips" thread further up the list. The Tech thread is a marvel of a work covering the various problems encountered by Wizards and Warriors players so far.

Try playing the game, and refer to the thread if problems arise. If you encounter a problem not covered in the thread then do post it to the forum and I am sure our top techies will help you out in a jiffy.

And do keep us posted on your progress.

OK I don't know if this holds true for Windows XP but when installing on Windows 2000 you don't get any shortcuts at all. You need to create it yourself. The file you are looking for is called 'deep6.exe'. Have you tried that? If not I suggest you either create a short cut or double click the file in explorer.

If you have tried that we need your system specifications. The more the better.

And welcome to the boards!

JOE030303 11-29-2003 07:15 PM

yes i was aware of that
for my specs see wizardry bugs 225 in that forum
thanks
joe

Bungleau 11-29-2003 10:32 PM

Okay... for those scratching their heads, you can find the post Joe030303 referenced above here. Joe, for future reference, you can make it lots easier on us by giving us a link to where the post is.

Quick mini-tutorial: to include a link in your post, include the following text:

<*a href="URL HERE">phrase to click on<*/a>

Just take out the asterisks in those first two tags, insert the URL where it goes, pick your phrase to click on, and you're ready to go. I usually copy the URL when I'm viewing the page, and then paste it. That's much easier than typing something like

http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/cg...;f=15;t=003607

which I just saw that the board turned into a link. Amazing stuff!! I learned something today!

Anyway, I'm going to post this and then read, to see if I can add anything.

Bungleau 11-29-2003 10:37 PM

Okay, in addition to what's in that link...

... what's your DirectX version? Run dxdiag to find out (start, run, dxdiag)

... have you followed the steps and items listed in the Tech Tips thread regarding Windows XP? Those are things we've identified that have to be done, including...

... the virtualdub thing?

... the Win95 compatibility mode thing?

... the "nothing that you don't really need running" thing?

Your exact video driver versions may matter... Willow will certainly have some thoughts on that. Also, are you trying to run in hardware mode, software mode, and at what resolution?

And dang it all, to get down to the basics, what exactly is the problem you're having? Be as specific as possible (I go to the menu and try to run, this is what I click on, this is what happens, etc.).

The more detail you can give us, the quicker we can get you out saving the Gael Serran!

To add I would like to see the following addition to Bungleau's little post. It may not be much but it helps when you are trying to read two threads at the same time. ;) </font><blockquote>code:</font><hr /><pre style="font-size:x-small; font-family: monospace;">&lt;a href=&quot;URL&quot; target=blank&gt;phrase&lt;/a&gt;
or simply use UBB code: Phrase goes here</pre>
The link will now open in a new window allowing one to read both threads at the same time.

And as Bungleau said we need more information. I would also like additional information about "i cant even get the game to load after installing". What happens exactly?

So So 12-01-2003 09:57 AM

I'm not much of a techie, but I have Windows XP (both home and professional) and W&W ran fine on both...In order to help we need more information like your processor, its speed, your RAM, etc.

Also you could try right clicking on Deep6.exe and going to program compatibility and making it run capable with Windows 95 which is what kept my game from crashing even in the Kerah battle...

Bungleau 12-01-2003 12:08 PM

Hey, Wyv... if you happen to wander in here, can you spot the post with the extra width and trim it down? I suspect it's Willow's code example in her post... breaking it into two lines would make the page easily readable again

TIA... OMN...

So Joe030303.... the ball's in your court. Tell us exactly what you've done and tried, and I'll bet you dinner we can get you playing. We haven't been stumped yet... :D

JOE030303 12-01-2003 08:04 PM

OK GUYS PLEASE BEAR WITH ME AS I AM A NEWBIE WHEN IT COMES TO CHANGING SETTINGS AND SUCH BUT HERE IS WHAT I DID.
FIRST I UPDATED ALL MY DRIVERS THEN UNINSTALLED W/W.
I REINSTALLED IT AT MAX SETTING.
I WENT TO THE FILE FOLDER AND TRIED TO LAUNCH IT BUT IT BROUGHT UP WINDOWS PICTURE AND FAX VIEWER
THERE IS ONLY ONE LAUNCH ICON WHICH IS W/W RIGHT?
PLEASE HELP I AM ALMOST READY TO SAY F-IT AND GIVE UP ON PLAYING THIS GAME
AT LEAST IT BLACK SCREENED ME ON LAUNCH BEFORE.

JOE030303 12-01-2003 08:05 PM

ps i took caps off so im not shouting at you all anymore

Marikai 12-01-2003 08:48 PM

You need to change its compatability modes... Thats what i did and it magically worked.

~Marikai

Bungleau 12-01-2003 10:41 PM

Cool! Caps off ;)

Okay, first things first... right-click on that icon you tried to launch and tell us what the properties are. We're specifically looking at the... target. Mine (Win98) is C:\Games\WizardsWarriors\deep6.exe . That deep6.exe is the actual program you're running. Let's make sure that's in there, 'cause if it's not, you ain't going nowhere...

Second, once you do get it in there, look around for the Win95 compatibility check box. I don't have XP, or I'd be able to point you to it... but find it, and make sure it's checked. That appears to be very important on XP...

Third, if you don't get in there (okay, this shoulda been second), you'll have to create the shortcut. My target probably won't work for you, because I tend to install games in custom directories. You'll have to make it match up; check the Tech Tips thread for details, or respond back here.

I think that's enough for this round. Don't give up yet, Joe; it is indeed possible to play W&W on XP, once everything's tweaked properly, and we can help you do that. Promise.

And once you get it working, we'll give you a free tip and tell you how to get into the crypt. It will save you a lot of frustration (unless you've already read about it ).

WillowIX 12-02-2003 05:33 AM

If clicking the file brought up windows picture viewer you clicked the icon file, not the program. ;) Create a shortcut instead! Just drag the file from the explorer, using your right mouse button, to the desktop and select create shortcut. Then right-click the file, choose properties, then the compatibility tab and select 'run in compatibility mode' and choose Windows 95 layer. Since the game is not starting at all (correct?) and it is in full screen I'm betting you are getting the old "Deep6.exe encounter a critical error and will be shut down" message (doesn't appear when a program is launched in full screen mode).

JOE030303 12-02-2003 09:03 AM

ok people im back
i feel like such an idiot willow was right i was trying to launch the icon.
when i went to the deep six file the program launched and i could watch the intro but when it tried to go to the game program i got this error message.
(instruction at 00423 dba reference memory 09410000 could not be written)
then i got a indeo codec error so i went to their web site and they want to charge me for this.
is there any way around this?
also i changed compatability to run in windows 95 mode and changed the vid settings to the 640 it asked for.
can you still help?

So So 12-02-2003 10:07 AM

I have gotten that message before too, but it only happened when I was playing and after the game suddenly froze. I'm not sure if this will help but do you have sufficent resources to run W&W? Or are you running programs in the background like Media Player? Hope that gets the ball rolling for some more ideas to help out your problem...

Bungleau 12-02-2003 11:14 AM

Okay, I just did some rummaging around the board archives and found the following two posts that relate to getting the codecs to behave.

http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/cg...=008077#000002

This one includes links to some of the codec versions.
http://www.ironworksforum.com/ubb/cg...=008216#000007

Willow is more knowledgeable on this stuff than I am, so I'll defer to her for responses. Unless you're really stuck, in which case I'll apply what little brain I have left.

LOL! No wonder it didn't work huh? ;)

On to the error messages. "instruction at 00423 dba reference memory 09410000 could not be written" is a usual 'You game isn't compatible with this OS so don't even try to run it!' message. :D Running the game in compatibility mode should clear out most of them. Since you are running XP you can tweak even more with the XP compatibility tools.

The older indeo codecs are still free, up to Indeo 5, and Bungleau's link will provide you with those. Install them and the videos will work as well.

JOE030303 12-02-2003 06:19 PM

I HAD ALREADY CHANGED THE COMPATABILITY MODE.
BUT I WILL DOWNLOAD THE CODEC AND SEE HOW IT WORKS AND GET BACK TO YOU.
THANKS

JOE030303 12-02-2003 06:45 PM

PEOPLE FINALLY SUCCESS I DOWNLOADED THE CODEC AND IT SEEMS TO RUN FINE.
NOW FOR MY LITTLE SECRET.
ABOUT A YEAR OR SO AGO I CONTACTED ACTIVISION AND THEY INFORMED ME THAT THIS GAME WAS NOT COMPATABLE WITH XP AND THEY COULD NOT OFFER SUPPORT ON IT AS IT WOULD NOT WORK ON MY SYSTEM.
YOU ALL ARE AWESOME MANY THANKS
NOW HOW ABOUT THAT CRYPT SECRET.

p.s. opps forgot caps lock again sorry about shouting

Where the official sources stop, this wonderful board takes over. And it often takes things quite a bit further.

Bungleau 12-02-2003 10:28 PM

:D Score another one for us...

Now, for that secret... when you get stuck trying to get into the crypt, take a closer look at the wall on your left, about the middle of the wall, about midway up. Whatever your mouse finds that you can manipulate, do so, and you will be rewarded...

WillowIX 12-03-2003 12:20 PM

Pfft Activision support. They're "stealing" our answers. However they can't claim that Wizards&Warriors are compatible with Windows XP since it really isn't. Bunch of legal mumbo-jumbo etc.

Wyvern 12-03-2003 03:53 PM

Welcome to the board, JOE030303!!!

I see you've been well helped! Hope you will keep us posted on how your game is going now that you've got it to work! ;)

JOE030303 12-04-2003 08:31 AM

new problem people it seems that now when i try to load a save game i get kicked out to the desktop.
i do have the patch installed and this only started happening after my party died and i tried to load a pevious save

Bungleau 12-04-2003 09:16 AM

Hmmm... any messages that happen when you get kicked out? Where exactly do you get kicked out at? I mean, when you start, when you get to the reload selection screen, when it's loading, when it should be done... where?

WillowIX 12-04-2003 12:58 PM

Strange. Can you perhaps try this? Create a completely new game with a new character. Save directly outside the Valeia gate. Exit the game and try to load that saved game. If you can't load that one either then we have a problem. If you can load the new game then your saved game (the one you can't load) is probably corrupt. :(
