Spoilers...
+ + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + After finishing up the Catacombs under Candlekeep (ch.5 or 6?) and then the subsequent cave/secret passage, I ran into a technical problem of sorts. After leaving the "cave area" and reaching the outside area of the Candlekeep walls, my game started to slow down to the point where the screen's frame rate was all but frozen. I would point/click to the area where I wanted my party to walk to and it would take them LITERALLY two minutes to get there! I restarted my computer thinking that maybe my RAM (128) had been exhausted from running other programs earlier in the day. When I loaded up a saved game from within the cave the frame rate and or game speed ran normally with no problems. However as soom as my party was outside the CK walls, the problem began again. This may or may not be important, but upon leaving this underground cave I cannot recall the game initiating a request for me to put in the possible corresponding CD. Note: I am running TotSC and have a total of six different discs, whenever I load up a new game it asks me for CD-6 aka the TotSC disc. So when I initially loaded up my saved game from within the 'cave/tunnel area' I had CD-6 in, but when I left the cave to go to the outside of the CK walls, the game DID NOT request of me to put in a different corresponding disc, say... CD-5 or CD-1. After about ten minutes (that's literally how much time it took) of walking around the walls, I left and was able to go to the city of BG and while there the game DID ask me for the corresponding disc and I had NO problems with game speed. But now I have another problem that maybe one of you nice folks could help with. After killing Mr. Prat and his gang within the cave area, I found and read the letter/note on his body, which said that Sarevok was heading back to BG, presumably the Iron Throne Tower, the Flaming Fist HQ, or Dunchal Palace. And upon leaving the cave area I met up with one of Sarevok's lackeys, forgot his name, but it starts with a "D", and naturally, I decided to kill him even though he said that he wanted to just walk away without any hard feelings. I obviously didn't get any reputation loss from the kill, but neither did I get much of any exp points from him (24 I think?), so I assume that he wasn't someone that I should/needed to kill. Did I screw up some important game sequence by killing this fella? Oh and also, was I supposed to meet someone outside the CK walls BEFORE going to BG? Because I didn't go snoopin around CK since my game was moving at such an oddly slow pace. BTW, when I went back to BG I went to the three aforementioned places and saw no one of any importance, was there supposed to be someone there to talk to? And two last things, I went back to CK and of course experienced the same damn problem, so I decided to put in the possible correct disc to see if it had an effect on the game speed and both CD-1 and 5 did nothing to fix the speed problem. Also I have NO MORE saved games from BEFORE the initial glitch outside of CK. I hope someone can help me out here, I would hate to see the 150 game-days that I have played, go down the drain! :( |
Get the ToSC patch from Bioware. There is a resource problem with ToSC. The patch fixes it.

I downloaded the 'US/Canada TotSC' patch and had it installed. I then loaded a saved game up again and went back to Candlekeep but it was still 'uber-slow'. I then decided to restart my computer thinking that the patch wouldn't take effect until I did so, but it still didn't do anything. Note: when I head to Candlekeep and the 'loading area' comes up, the loading process takes extremely long to finish. I have NEVER had any problems in the past with playing this game or any other game for that matter, my system specs are not spectacular but do seem to be sufficent for most games out there today. Pentium 3, 450 mghz, 128 ram, GeForce-4 MX 420 AGP 64mb, and running Win98. |
Go into your BG1 folder, find the cache and delete it.
|
Quote:
I went into the Cache folder and opened up the Data folder within it and deleted the files there. When I restarted the game I had CD-6 in my drive yet the game asked me for CD-5. Kind of strange, though it probably had to do with the fact that it had no area data/cache to work from. Anyhue, the game speed at Candlekeep is STILL no different from before. I read about deleting the game's cache on the 'BioWare forum' last night, but shouldn't the overfilled cache effect the speed of the entire game, in every area? Oh and please, if anyone can reasure me that I didn't screw up the plot somehow that would be great! And could someone spoil me on what comes next in the game after the catacombs? And am I going to have to go back to Candlekeep later in the game? Or am I finished there? Because if so, then I might not have to worry about my primary problem in the first place! HHHHHHHEEEEEEELLLLLLLLPPPPPPPP!!!!!!! |
Let's just say that once you leave Candlekeep after escaping the underground catacombs, you don't need to go back. You're primary concern would be to go to Baldur's Gate, or if haven't done the TotSC quests yet, then go to Ulgoth's Beard.
|
Killing that guy makes no difference to the plot. He is just one of Sarevok's lackeys.
Play On!!!! |
Well, as you don't have to go back to CK, you don't have to worry about it. Forget it and get back to playing.
You can kill ALL the guys who work for Sarevok without ruining the plot. You can let some of them go, but killing them won't change anything. There's also noone waiting outside the CK's walls so you can just proceed to BG. There should be someone waiting for you in all the 3 places you mentioned. However, you won't be able to reach one of them before you visit the Undercellars. |
Well, I did go back into BG and looked for someone to talk to at the Iron Throne Tower, the Flaming Fist HQ, Dunchal Palace, and even the area with the Gate into the city.
I didn't see anyone to talk to. I did rest up at an Inn and had the 'dream sequence' where I see some raven and my reflection in a pool, or something like that. But I still didn't find anyone to talk to and my journal only said to go back to the IT tower. Where PRECISELY am I supposed to go now after the catacombs, go ahead you can spoil me. (Edit: You mean I have to go and meet someone in the undercellars before I can continue the plot through the three aforementioned places? If so, then I'm guessing that you are referring to either the cellar bellow the IT tower, or the 'undercellar of Ill-repute' which has all those frisky girls, right? Upon returning to BG City in Chapter 7, there are only three places that you'll NEED to go:
- Top floor of the Iron Throne - Undercellars (yes, with the frisky girls) - One more location, which will become obvious after doing the Undercellar. Your progression in the Main Plot seems normal, but I don't have a clue about your game lag. |
Umm Sir Heinrich? Only megahertz? ps. it's mhz not mghz for those who care (I don't care if capitalization effects the meaning - so *blah* ;p

S-P-O-I-L-E-R-S ahead
> > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > > walk straight to the Flaming Fist head quarters, you should get arrested right away if this happens then you're on the right track. They will through you in a cell with a little Mage that goes by the name of Zeb or Neb. He will ask you ato answer a wierd riddle, after you answer he will use a spell and your team slips out through a secret tunnel. Now head straight to the Iron Throne Tower again but, before you get to far you will meet a woman named Tomoko talk to her and you will find out a few things and she will try to get you to leave Sarevok alone, I killed her, she was tough but she couldn't take on the whole party then afterward head toward the Iron Throne and chech out every floor from bottom to top. On the 5th floor you will find someone "Cythandra" attack her and she will surrender and tell you about the Undercellers and give you a diary that belonged to Sarevok READ this Diary it will unfold alot of the story plot. Then continue down to the Sewers. There you'll find Slyth and Cristen Kill them and search the bodys. Slyth has a scroll on his body it is an invitation to the dukes Palace to make Sarevok the new Duke. Now head farther into the underdark until you find the way into the Palace ( SAVE YOUR GAME NOW) and then try to kill Sarevok BE VERY CAREFUL,from here your on your own. |

BTW, what do you mean by 'game lag'? Quote:
My bad, I typed it fairly quickly without much thought to it's proper abreviated form. Does this mean that I will receive an "F", Professor Firestormalpha? ;) |
This is really starting worry me!
I went to the IT tower and snooped around EVERY room, even the basement and the roof top, but all I found were big fat merchants and two cooks! Then I went to the Blushing Mermaid and then the undercellar which is connected to it. I spent a whole lot of time pausing and placing my mouse cursor over every skank, Nobleman, and guard, but found NO ONE of any importance. Then I went to the Flaming Fist HQ and talked to every guard that I could, atmost one of them said that Duke Elton is upstairs waiting to talk to me. Well I went up there and there is NO ONE around. I am really getting ticked off! Is there any way to delv into my game files and see if there is an error or something that is missing in my plot sequence? Or maybe cheat a little by forcing a plot initiation? Note: While I was at Candlekeep, "Mr. Koveras" offered me a ring, but I DID NOT accept it. Also, I did not make it any farther up (if it's even possible) than the THIRD floor within CK, since I was then thrown in jail by the guards. I don't know if those two above things could have any effect on my plot or not, but I thought I would mention them. |
They couldn't. It's totally irrelevant whether you accept the ring or not and you're not even supposed to reach the top floor of the CK (although you can if you hide in shadows).
|
By "game lag," I meant the computer slowing to a crawl as you exited Candlekeep.
But it was your post after that that is making me worry, and I'l tell you why: Your game is messed up. The game does not know what chapter you are in. That's why you're not finding anyone in the Iron Throne or the Undercellar, and why you're not having loads of fun with the Flaming Fist. Don't bother CLUAing in an invitation--it won't do you any good. What you should do is go to your Journal, and see what chapter the game thinks you're in. If my theory is correct, you "should" still be in Chapter 6. In a NORMAL game, Chapter 6 would be the Return to Candlekeep. As you as you re-emerge from the catacombs, the game waits a few seconds, then goes to the "Beginning Chapter 7" screen. You made no mention of this, all you reported was that your game speed got shot all to hell. Dollars to nickels says that this is where the game choked. I'd also be willing to bet that you don't have an old Saved game before this point to go back to. There might be a way to use the CLUA console or Gatekeeper to slap some sense into the game and force it to recognize that you're in Chapter 7, but I've never heard of one. Your exploits in the Candlekeep Library seem perfectly normal, by the way. |
If the theory about the chapters is correct, then you can use the console to help you solve the problem.
After activating the console in Baldur.ini file, enter the game and type the following in the console: CLUAConsole:EnableCheatKeys(). Then to jump onto the next chapter click ctrl+c. Hope it works, 'cause I remember I tried it once (just for fun) and that it didn't work. Anyway, give it a try. |

As you guessed SOS, my journal still has me in chapter 6, however the chapter 7 section of my journal is there, only it is comepletely blank. I can't remember if you can see the blank pages of further chapters? - so I thought I would bring it up. As far as any 'movie scenes' for chapter 7, I honestly can't remember if I saw one or not, but I doubt that I did because I probably would have taken note of it as I have done so in all the other chapter movies. I did however notice that when I slept at an inn, after leaving CK, that there was some dream sequence where I look at my reflection in a pool and a raven is perched above me or something like that. But I don't know if that dream really means much or not? Hey you guys can go ahead and spoil me by 'refreshing' my memory about the chapter 7 movie, then I should know for sure if I experienced it or not. Oh, and I do have CLUA up and running so I may try Flaming Fist Enforcer's suggestion. I do have Gatekeeper installed, but it no longer works for my current saved games. I started my main character out as mage but quickly got frustrated at the melee fighting deficency of an All Mage Party, so I changed him to a fighter. However, I made a big mistake, I forgot to errase all of his previous mage spells BEFORE I switched his class! So now when I try to load up a saved game from GK it says, "ERROR! Unknown spell type!", and won't allow me to access it. I wish that I knew how to delete that stupid 'Identify' spell from his book, but I bet it's nearly impossible. :( |
Quote:
There's no actual "movie" for Chapter 7, just a screen. Chapter 1: Face-on view of the Armored Figure Chapter 2: View of Nashkel (Still from the Kobold movie) Chapter 3: Still from the Bandit Camp movie? Chapter 4: Still from the Bandit Camp movie? (I forget) Chapter 5: Still from the Cloakwood movie Chapter 6: Close-up of a book in a display case (from Candlekeep movie) Chapter 7: Still from Iron Throne movie (pillars, torches, fancy chair). A voice-over talks about how you have to go to Baldur's Gate to stop Sarevok and clear your name (So people won't think you're a murderer who goes around killing people like Rieltar for fun). Quote:
But I don't know if that dream really means much or not? Hey you guys can go ahead and spoil me by 'refreshing' my memory about the chapter 7 movie, then I should know for sure if I experienced it or not. Quote:

OH THANK YOU!
THANK YOU! THANK YOU! Thank you oh so very much Flaming Fist Enforcer and SixOfSpades! If the two of you were females I would lay a big fat kiss on each of ya! Anyhue... I went back to Candlekeep as I figured that this is where the Chapter 7 movie/still was scripted to originally take place at (not sure if it matters though). I then typed in: EnableCheatKeys() and hit the 'enter' key. Then I pushed 'Ctrl' and 'C' and then... bada bing, bada boom! The beautiful four-star chapter 7 movie began and I just about fell off my chair! I then checked my journal and... what the heck, shouldn't there be some notes of the movie that I just watched? So I was a little worried there for a while, until I made it back to the 'Gate' and was imediately engaged in a conversation with some Zhentarin lackey, which in turn added some notes to the ch7 journal. I'm at the coronation right now and everything seems to be running pretty smooth. Except for the fact that the experience for all my character's is back to the original TotSC level of 161,000. My characters are still at the levels that they were at before I initiated the movie, which is good. So this 'Experiece Cap Remover' that I installed may have been the original problem which screwed up my progression in the game. Not sure, but it's atleast worth taking note of as a possible bug related to the 'Cap Remover'. Anyways, I want to thank all those who posted and tried to help me with my predicament. I may afterall be able to see the conclusion of my ALL-TIME most favorite RPG, even if I don't want the game to ever end! Thanks everyone! |
I'm glad I could help. You see, cheating is not always bad ;) .
|
About the Gate Keeper thing, have you tried using the programs own fix application?
|
Quote:
The Gatekeeper that I have installed does still function, just not with my current saved games. And I can't really see myself using it again for my current party/campaign since I'm already so strong that nothing (except maybe the last battle) will challenge me. If I "needed" some sort of item or something, I can always use CLUA, but I tend to feel the same way as SixOfSpades in that cheating will almost indefinetly ruin your gaming experience. Now cheating as a means to fix a problem or a bug in your game is not cheating in my opinion. And if you want to cheat and maybe try some 'powergaming', then make sure that you have first beaten, or almost beaten the game on your own. Just my opinion though. However, thanks for telling me about this 'fix aplication' Raistlin Majere. Can it be found on the Mudmaster site? And is it a separate aplication from that of Gatekeeper? Because I cannot even access any of my specific saved games via Gatekeeper, as soon as I click on the 'open saved game' button, it pops up an error message. |
Quote:
. . . . . . . You shouldn't killer her. She shows up again at the very end with more revealing dialogue, plus you still have the choice of fighting her then if you want. |
One of the problems with Gatekeeper (at least) is that it does not handle exceptions to the normal rules. If your fighter has spells that s/he shouldn't have, then it crashes. Similarly, if you mess up adding a spell to a level where it doesn't belong - the same thing occurs.
In the end those save games are no longer valid, as far as Gatekeeper is concerned. I'm not sure if this has been fixed in the Shadow update, but you won't be able to "fix" them. As far as I know. |
Quote:
When you go to 'Open Saved Game', it pops up a new window, then you highlight the corrupted game file and click the 'Repair' button. It then creates a duplicate of your selected file so that when it attempts to detect and correct the possible corrupted areas, it doesn't permenently scew it up. So anyways, it fixed my game file and the editor now works. But don't worry SixOfSpades, I'm not going to use! ;) |
Righto Sir Heinrich, thanks for the update.
I suspect that the "Repair" feature is an element of the new version. It's so long since I've used Gatekeeper, that I have an older copy and it doesn't exist on the one I have installed. Interesting though, as I've had the spell problem happen to me in IWD too, when I've started partys with characters which I've failed to change before pressing 'GO'. |
