I trust you all (or most of you) know who Algernon is and why is he a special NPC. I've been stealing that cloak off him for years now, every time I played the game. I never wondered though, if there's might be any quest where the cloak would come as a reward. So if you know something please post here.

There is some guy in baldur's gate somewhere who asks you to get the cloak for him.

. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . (clipped from a walkthrough) A Dwarf named Pheirkas has need of Algernon's Cloak, so long as you don't kill Algernon. Go to the Feldepost's Inn and filch it off of him (if you haven't already), and bring it back for a reward: 300 exp, and 200 gp. 300 exp, and 200 gp = reward??
I'll rather keep the cloak. Whatever, I haven't met Pheirkas or just can't remember him. |

I would suggest that you keep the cloak and say to Pheirkas instead. BTW I never met this guy, so I do not know if is one of the dialog options :D Insane |
Hmmm... Now that you mention I think I remember, but I'll have to go see him to refresh my memory. Anyway, thx.

A lot of "FedEx" quests give rewards that are pitiful than the item you're bringing back; Gurke's troubles with the Belt Ogre, for instance. This is a nice indicator of just what kind of Roleplayer you are: A powergamer would complete the quest, collect the reward, and if (s)he feels they'd be better off not completing the quest, they'd Reload and keep the item. A roleplaying Paladin, on the other hand, might feel honor-bound to return the item to its "rightful" owner.

I am a power playing XP-holic, who role plays where it doesn't 'hurt' too much. I always end up with something that in 'role play terms' could explain, why I kept those boots, why I pickpocketed that cloak and so on. I am a master of 'bad' excuses

It's the best damn item in the game... PERIOD!
So keep it and go make use of it on this Pheirkas fella. Given this cloak, even "Noober the annoying" could become a formidable foe! [ 04-24-2003, 03:26 PM: Message edited by: Sir Heinrich Godfrie IV ] |
Sir Heinrich is on the money. Turning over the cloak is a bad deal. The reward for giving it up is paltry in comparison to its true value. I once was in a "mood" and used it to literally charm a platoon of npcs - all off to their doom. No one was safe. It is also the cure for those times a civilian turns hostile and you dont want to kill him. I understand the developers of BG2 changed the cloak because it was so abused.

Oh oh oh. . . . I just got a sinister idea, not sure if it would work though.
(Spoiler) - - - - - - - - - - - - - - - When fighting Aec'Latec (I think that's how it's spelled; it's been awhile), use the cloak on his disciples. Dunno if it would work, but hey its worth a try, no? He'd have to kill his own followers, and leave no opening for a reincarnation. (would they leave such a large loop-hole in the game?) |
The Cloak isn't in BG2 at all, it was so overpowered. You can still hack it in, I believe, but that's the only way. And, as far as I know, no MOD has been written that brings it back.
I don't know about you, Firestormalpha, but when I'm down in that room I've got slightly better things to do than Charm cultists. |
OK, another question: Is there any way of getting the cloak other then stealing it from Algernon?

I think the programmers wanted us to do the following: 1) Talk to Pheirkas to get knowledge of the cloak. 2) Find Algernon and steal it. 3) Go back to Pheirkas with the cloak. 4) Drop your jaw when you see the reward. 5) Reload the game and keep the cloak ;) Insane [ 04-25-2003, 04:21 AM: Message edited by: InsaneBane ] |
Yes Firestormalpha, you can Charm the Cultists and get them to help you, I remember doing it and found an old posting back in July 2002 where I explained this. At the time I was using a small party (numerically) and needed a little help, so I used Dire Charm, but I am sure the Cloak works just as well. As you say it's a nice role-playing touch to turn them against their Master.
My other comment about Algenon's Cloak concerns it's success rate, which I found to be very high. On the few occasions that the target resisted, I am fairly sure I got a message " Save versus Breath Weapon" which is totally weird but may explain why it is hard to save against. Can anyone confirm this? |
It does show as save vs breath weapon from what I remember. As far as the cloak not being in Bg2 - that may be the case - but I may have brought it in on a characters back.
To get the cloak - you can use a hex editor and change something into the cloak or gate keeper. |
Yep, the Cloak does indeed force a Save vs. Breath Weapon, which is usually garanteed to be the a target creature's worst Save. About the only people who could make their Save more than once were high-level Warriors, such as Flaming Fist.

Well, thx for the compliment, SoS. Although I still have to make 2550 posts to become 20th lvl warrior, I already have high saving throws ;) . You can't charm me easily...
