I have tried several times and he keeps killing me.I have a ranger,thief,druid-fighter,fighter,and two clerics.I think my lack of a magic user may be the problem.Any help or cheats would help.Thank you.

your joking right,
not to be mean but your party wouldnt be my first choice, or second, or third and so on. you only need one cleric one fighter maybe two mages a ranger is good and a thief i would recomend starting over, or go get edwin hes pretty good |
Yes go get Edwin at the bridge heading west in the southern part of Nashkel and dump one of the Clerics then get some potions of explosion and have Edwin buy as many high level spells as you can afford from the Mage At High Hedge just west of Beregost. Have Edwin learn and enter them in his mage book then everyone sleep so that the spells become memorized and active, then go kill Davaeorn and his lackies.

Some more stats on your existing party would be nice. What levels are your party members? What gear do they have? (Sounds to me like you have Imoen, Jaheira, Khalid, Branwen, and probably Viconia in your party.) Many people are suggesting to take Edwin and dump a cleric. You've already bypassed two other mages (Xzar and Xan), so he looks like your best bet. Get him some spells, rest to memorize them, and come back to Davaeron. Dispel magic is your friend. Davaeron has a horrible habit of Dimension Door-ing everywhere. Send out one character with low AC and high hitpoints (probably Khalid) to act as bait. Sooner or later, Davaeron's going to stop teleporting from place to place, stand still, and start tossing spells. He might Dire Charm a couple party members. If that happens, you can try casting Hold on the Dire Charmed party member, or even Charm to get him/her back over to your side. Make sure Imoen checks for traps. There are a couple nasty ones down there that could kill or even chunk a party member. But try not to cheat. The fun of BG1 comes from solving puzzles and winning battles using the gear you earned and the gray matter between your ears. |
I killed Mr. D. like this:
I had two good fighters (Minsc and myself (a paladin)) hunting him down. Whenever we closed in on the mage he would cast dimensional door to escape. But after some jumping around I guess he ran out of dimensional door spells. Minsc was very close to him then and charged him and 2 hits after, Mr. D. was dead. He did not even had the time to release any spells. Maybe I was lucky or maybe it is just as simple as this to whack Mr. D. I do not know. Insane |
It took me a few attempts to kill him as well. In the end I summoned some monsters (cheese alert!!) to chase him while he was dimension dooring all over the place and used my mages to to shoot magic missiles at him whenever he looked like casting. In the end he ran out dimension doors?! and I nailed him with monsters and Kivan. I guess you cando it without mages but it will be pretty tough.
|
Oh - I almost forgot the cheasy part: Minsc wore 'boots of speed'. Thats why (I guess), Mr. D. didn't have the time to send a fire ball in Minsc's direction

get your fighters and tanks into the fron so hes attacking them and get the cleric and healers healing maybe throw in a few monster sommonings shake well and waa-laa Dead Daeveron Souflay
|
I swarmed him with skeletons( from my Cleric) and beat the crap out of him. He couldn't cast a single thing due to constant spell casting failure. Magic Missiles took care of his Mirror Images.

I can't imagine going through the game without a mage... But if you can do it, I say do it. Different strokes for different folks, and all that. I just set everyone up with missile weapons, had my PC thief disarm the traps in the main entry to the room, hasted my whole party, and charged in. That fellow never had time to throw any spells off. Every time he appeared, he started getting hailed by arrows, stones, and bolts. That kinda makes it hard for a mage to concentrate enough to get that fireball off. You might be able to do it without the haste spell, but by the looks of your party you got too many slingers and not enough archers. But trying it can't hurt. Maybe open up with a backstab before the rush, soften him up a bit. After all, he's only a mage. They die easy. Just keep the pressure on him.

First off, WELCOME TO IRONWORKS, CAPSTER!
Second, Taran, it's not really a good policy to read a new member's very first post and tell them they messed up and should start over, after getting all the way to the end of Chapter 4. capster: Davaeorn is actually one pathetic enemy. I usually step on 2 of the Traps on purpose, as they spawn Battle Horrors that make the fight more interesting. With or without the BHs, Davaeorn's a pushover: One Dispel Magic and some ranged weapons, and he won't be able to get a single spell off. (Well, maybe one, but I doubt it.) He is a Mage in BG1, and therefore a piece of cake. |
Welcome Capster,
Good advice Six, Davaeorn is really not that hard if you can get your party sorted and organised. Being a Mage he doesnt have many hit points, but you'll need to use +1 Arrows and Bullets. Just make sure he doesnt get any spells off and you'll be fine. I'm sure there ought to be a good use for Sanctuary in this battle, two hidden Clerics can see a lot of the danger up ahead, without being seen. p.s. What's wrong with his party, many people play the first half without a Mage and some, like Midget Gems Jnr, go on to finish with no magic at all. |
It is indeed very hard to beat Daveron without a mage. I used a very simple tactic. I had my thief disarm the traps and used a protection from magic scroll i found. I then let Daveron waste all of his spells on Imoen, who was protected, until he ran out of spells and attacked with his staff. It could only be called a massacre.

Not having a mage in BG1 isn't too big of a deal. Mages are the type to get powerful at higher levels, and at best, you'll get to level 9 in BG1 (and that's with the expansion pack installed).
Davaeron isn't too difficult with the right strategy. All you have to do is throw up a dispel magic when he puts up his mirror image and protection from missles. Then 5 people with missle weapons, and one melee character will take him out in no time. |
I remember when I played the game for the first time. I didn't have a mage either. They seemed too weak. I was very fighter-oriented. Later I realized that they are really necessary and went for Dynaheir who was lower level than the rest of my party so I had to go around killing random enemies (without the rest of the party) to get her some xp.
Don't do the same mistake as I did, Capster. Go get Edwin or Dynaheir. My tactic against Davaeorn is: First disarm the 4 traps in the small hallway at the beginning of the level. Stealth your thief and go a bit forward to see where Dave is. When you see him get back to the rest of your party. Now send a mage and cast dispel in front of him but be very careful that he doesn't see you. Don't save the game now, because when you load Dave will have all the protections again. Now cast Stinking Cloud and/or Cloudkill in front of him (again be careful he doesn't see you). When you see a message he fainted go a bit forward with your archers and start shooting at him. You can also use spells such as magic missile on Dave or cast chant/bless on your archers. This tactic always worked great for me. |

Much easier is to shoot him up with arrows. OK, he uses protection from normal arrows, but if you use magical ones... I had 4 guys in my party shooting at him and he was dead even before Dynaheir could cast her magic missile.

Welcome to Ironworks, Capster
I remember how I had trouble killing him as well on my first run through the game (Following the main plot line and ignoring the other areas tends to leave your party at a lower level than you might like). After countless tries (I had no idea how useful summons were at the time, or that it might be a good idea to carry more than a handful of enchanted arrows on your person, along with enough bows for the entire party, and dispel magic hadn't even crossed my mind... this was pre-Ironworks of course) I took my party into the side room, and rested until the duration on the protection from magic missiles ran out. Then I peppered the wizard with bolts and arrows and bullets until he died. After that, I started looting and had to leave half of my earlier won posessions behind just to carry the spoils out, and I never found an oppertunity to go back and collect them after. Those were the days... |
For some reason everytime iv killed Davaeron iv found it really easy, maybe thats just because i explore everywhere and then my party just kicks ass. I dont think i even had to reload the first time i fought him. As for getting edwin, if ur gona do that then i would suggest doing a bit of exploring first, he wont be a very high level (level 3 i think it is) so try getting some more xp from places like knoll stronghold (if u haven't done it) or just choose a side of the map (I reccomend the left as it is probably easier than the right) and just start at the bottom of the map and work ur way up killing as u go. There are also some things ther that will give u quite a lot of gold (we're talking thousands here) if ur in need of some new armour etc.

yeh, disarming the traps via stealth and then standing in the middle 'crossroads' all with (magical) missile weapons and hammering him as he dimension doors in (and therefore out!) is a winner
if you use arrows of biting he'll probably end up dying out of sight somewhere and then you have the fun of finding his poison bloated evil corpse |
All I do in this fight is disarm the three or four battle horror traps and then send Kivan into the fray on his own, equipped with nothing but a bow, one arrow of dispelling, and five arrows of biting. Davaeorn's dead before he can even complete his awesome line of (thick Russian accent) "so, the stoic adventurers have found their way down to my lairrr... " . I'll often fight the guy multiple times just to hear him say it. I now have to wear headphones on my computer while doing this though, as I've received a number of individual complaints :D

Um... I would just like to add that Druids are just as good as clerics, so dustbunny you don't necessarily need a cleric if you have Jaheria already. And a mages rule! I always play a mage or a mulit mage type character.

Sorry I'm late. Umm. . welcome to IronWorks.
On to the topic. Are you telling me that Daveaorn is supposed to be hard? I just made him waste his Lightning spells by letting him target me in a hall then getting out of the hall before the spell was released. If it wasn't for his shield (whatever spell that was), he'd have killed himself. |
Um, y'all know that the original post was made sometime back in March? (Check the expiration date. ;) And look, there's my old SN before Chocolate ate my account! :D )
Edit: Speaking of old accounts, if Chocolate wasn't so hungry, I'd be Drizzt by now. [ 08-10-2003, 10:05 PM: Message edited by: Pirengle ] |
People check the dates? I didn't know people actually bothered with that.
