Sounds like a driver problem. What's your card's manufacturer?

I'd run the game in Software Mode first; that may solve the problem. If not, go to your card's manufacturer's web site and download the latest drivers.

Software Mode works just fine for the game. You miss out on some of the lighting effects, but in general, the game is brighter in Software Mode anyway.

Hope this helps! Let us know if you need more assistance.

thanks SAZ... but im not much of a computer (0) buff, what do you mean by software mode?

Sazerac 06-03-2001 07:31 PM

Okay...when you're in the Town screen, click on the little computer icon on the lower left corner of the screen. This pulls up the Options window. Click on the "Graphics" button. On the "Mode" drop-down list box, select "Software"...make sure you're not in D3D mode. Sometimes that's a problem.

If it's already at software mode, come back and let us know. We'll try to figure out something else.

Guess what.. it is in software mode...darn .... any more sugg?, stick of dyno?, chainsaw?, baseball bat maby? lol

Sazerac 06-04-2001 08:36 PM

Okay...we're most likely talking a driver problem here.

What is your card's manufacturer? Find out what that is, and then check their website on the internet and see if they have some updated drivers. Download those and install them, and then restart your computer and see if it works.

Also: what OS are you running? Windows 98? Windows Me? Windows 2000? Systems other than 98 sometimes give problems, and there are workarounds for those.

Maybe if we can track down the adapter that Windows thinks is there. Try this sequence:

Start Button|Settings|Control Panel|Display
Click on the Settings tab
Click on the Advanced button
Click on the Adapter tab

It should look something like this:

and let us know what the results are.

That appears to be an older video chipset. Here's a link to the Trident chip maker tech support/downloads page:
TridentMicro

You might also check with the manufacturer of your motherboard since some MB makers modified the behavior of the integrated graphics chips. You can see who the maker is during the BIOS bootup on the black screen.

Other thoughts:
Ensure that you're not running other memory-hungry programs in the background (active anti-virus, etc.); try installing to another location (after doing a scandisk and disk defrag); and check out Saz's Help Desk too.
