Hi All!
Looks like the forums at Heuristic Park are shutting down, to quote: "I regret to inform you that SitePowerUP.com and its services will be shutting down permanently on June 1, 2001. The only exception to this is email. Users who have @sitepowerup.com accounts are welcome to keep them. Since 1997 we have provided services for over 50,000 web sites and have logged almost a half billion pageviews from our users. Those of you with paid service will be refunded a prorated percentage of your current payment after the first week of June." And a poster by the name of Zardon had this to say: "To tell you the truth I doute HPI & SitePowerUp.com have anything in common. I'm sure HPI just picked a forum board by Random. You can still get User-to-User Technical Support over at Ironworks http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi? " So we may have some more new posters shortly. Flamers and trolls of the worst order, RudeDawg. *sigh* Worst case, it will make what happened on GD last week seem like a picnic in Central Park.
Wyvern, I forsee dire portents! I hope your breath of flame weapon is at the ready! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif -Sazerac |

I won't let ANYONE take this place from me without a fight.... Saz, I think you saw my replies to some of the GD threads. If you would rather I backed off, let me know. If not, I'm sharpening my twin swords, stringing my bow, and settling in to defend our castle. "Let them come. so that site closing down means some people might be comings here and they might be people that are going to be a pain in the ass? I hope I got what you guys were saying all wrong...I would hate to have ppl like that

Let's wait and see what happens first. I think Wyvern is most able to defend almost any stronghold http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...miles/wink.gif . What will be needed are courteous, polite, and firm reminders of our policies here and continuing to treat everyone here with courtesy; in short, what has made this forum such a strong, positive one over the last few months.
And, barring that, a good IP address kickban in the touche will solve anything else! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif -Saz |

No worries, the god-mods here are the "fastest guns in the west". The whole site is one of the better moderated ones I've ever been on. Right...that's what we've got to do...self-policing has always been the strongest point on this board. I remember when I first came to this board in either late October or early November. One of the first posts that was sitting in the middle of the board was something like "f***ing game sucks ****" or something like that and flames flying everywhere about it. I said "right-ho"; I'd seen enough boards like that, and didn't come back to Ironworks for three weeks. Finally, looking for a piece of information, I dared to stick my nose back in here again, just to see if I could look it up and then skedaddle without arousing the "beasts" here...and everyone was so wonderful and nice, I hardly knew it to be the same board! So I started posting here in late November, and thus that legend was born. http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif My point in bringing this up is how just one nasty inflammatory post can lose a potential new member who may have a treasure-trove to offer the board. It danged near lost me before I even got started. No telling what we lost potentially last week in GD. There are no winners in flame-wars, and only the innocent are hurt. Let's hope it doesn't come to that. For all we know, there may be good posters over there too who need a respite from all the BS. -Sazerac |
Y'all may remember me limping in here (the BG2 board, actually)after BGD shut down. I was battered and bruised, after watching a great site go down in flames, knowing I had fought a good fight, but saw us lose the war.
This whole site is a breath of fresh air. Everyone is so great to each other. During the "Times of Troubles" (the 2 week temp shutdown of the site) I hit my bookmark AT LEAST once a day. Usually, many more. This place is too good to let go. Y'all, Wyvern and Saz, fight the good fight. Let me know if you need backup... ------------------ The RudeDawg Known in these Forgotten Realms as Perin LightEyes "Let them come. Let them ALL come." There will be NO nonsense on OUR board!!!
One thing we have going for us already is the obvious tone of this board. It is friendly and helpful, not to mention - funny. Just reading a few posts should clue any newbies in on that. If anyone sees someone going off in directions untolerated - feel free to email me. I try to catch everything but I'm always grateful to extra eyes! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif And if you find such a post - let ONE person give them the "friendly warning" and then everyone else - IGNORE THE POST! Don't give them ammo! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif Wyv |
This is the first time I posted in this Forum. My swords are at your disposal. I will defend this Great Board from all evil doers.

The forums here at IronWorks are the exception to the rule. Just about every forum I've been to (especially the ones run by the gamemakers) have gamers who thrive on abusing some of the most respected posters on those boards.
At Pool of Radiance board I'm in the middle of a battle over Free Speech and profanity and it isn't pretty. It makes me look like a prude, because I find some of trash talk repulsive. This a bit of what I wrote: "I will defend your right to use whatever words you feel are necessary to express yourself. That said, I will also expect you to use your best judgement and to respect others, when you choose those words. Freedom of Speech is a right we all share and should be used with tolerance and intelligence, it should not abused for shock value." I guess I shouldn't worry about what could happen, especially when nothing probably will, but I do worry that some sad individuals may try the same stuff here. This place is great..I hope we can keep it so. I will more than happy if I'm wrong and be labeled the old fart who cried wolf! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif Mark [This message has been edited by skywalker (edited 05-30-2001).] |
I have not picked up the game yet. If I have the money on friday I will pick it up then and then be busy all weekend playing it.

No need to panic. I'm sure we'll do fine. Let's not forget that it takes two people or more to start a war. Keep an open mind, some of them might be looking for a change attitude and might not enjoy flames at all. Some others, on the other hand, might want to start a flame war. Let's not forget that they lots their forum, let's be sympathetic. But let's make sure we don't loose OUR forum by engaging in such childish behavior.
If you see a flame post, follow Wyvern instructions... Ignore it. It's the best thing to do. My two Canadian cents (About $0.013 US) |

Thanks Saz. I played BG2 without any help up until I had a question concerning the Underdark. So I should be Ok with it.

I visited Heuristic Park's site before I started coming here, and I never noticed it to be full of trouble-makers or anything of the sort. The information and the banter I get here is much better, so I spend most of my time here, but I still pop in every once in a while over there.
Anyway, really, the point of this post is to ask what has gone on over there that makes the prospect of HP shutting down the site and the posters coming over here so frightening? Maybe I missed the point of Saz's post, but I was just curious why everyone is so wary....Is it just the prospect of a HUGE amount of posters flooding in all at once looking for help? And before anyone gets bent out of shape and thinks I'm trying to start trouble or bring up any bad feelings from what has happened on GD over the past week, I am NOT trying to start trouble or get anyone riled up. I'm just curious http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif |
Well, the URL to this msgboard has been posted/emailed ALLOT of times from the HP board. So I don't think anything is going to change since nearly everyone that posts on the HP board, also posts here.
BTW, almost nobody uses the HP msg boards, & I doubt it has more than a few dozen users. [This message has been edited by u_u (edited 05-31-2001).] |

Most of the flames were posted at the technical forum at the HPI site, some of it was pretty bad and it was poorly moderated. The discussion side was usually pretty good and helpful. On the tech side, it was perfectly fine to bash HPI and Activision, giving no quarter. If you defended them you were abused and bashed also. Just look at the 2nd and 3rd pages if your really interested. Just my view. Mark |
Most of the flamers on the 3rd page are allready members here........

Thank you moderators, and good people for makeing this forum fresh and fun. I know you would not let anyone ruin it. I dont know what happened last week ..and don't understand why anyone would want to ruin a disscussion forum..? I will be here supporting you all.

Hiya,
There is a god...I'm so glad they are taking that site down. Its really sad that some people have nothing better to do than complain about something. Good riddance! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif Scronan |

I've posted a couple times on HPI's technical forum and read through a bunch of the posts. Clearly, since it's a technical forum, people who post there are having problems with the many *bugs* and *fatal errors* the game gives on some systems, such as mine experiencing the desktop crash. These people are NOT happy campers and the general tone of the forum can be expected to be negative, especially since HPI hasn't responded to any of the posts since early January.
I'm sure that if I could get the game running I would be much more positive about it, but as it is I can't see myself buying Activision again. Keep in mind that the only workable advice I've seen towards my specific problem, which many people on the HPI technical forum have, is reformat the hard drive and start all over. Utterly ridiculous and impractical for someone who has many gigs of software installed!! Activision really needs to get their act together and listen to some of the complaints on that technical forum. Ritesh |
Course, being angry with HPI and Activision doesn't make flaming posters right either. I recall being accused as a planted operative for Activision for claiming that the game ran fine on my computer and then being bashed to bits over it. (I don't work for them...I wish).
Mark |
A lot of technical problems can be solved with a few simple workarounds. Some can't, but most can. If people would just be willing to help someone work through something rather than bash them for it, so much could be accomplished.
I feel badly now that I did not go to the HPI technical forum more often. I may have been able to help quite a few there with the game setup. However, I have a feeling that most of it was whining behavior more than anything else, and I can't abide that. Nope, I'm better off not staying around there...no guilt here! -Sazerac |
Saz - I wouldn't feel badly about not going over "there" - from everything I've heard (and my one brief visit) they wouldn't have really cared that you could help them. Wouldn't have taken a lot on Activision's or HPI's part for someone to have been trying to find the work arounds for players.
If we get a bunch of posters from over there - you'll get the chance to help them here (and they will behave too!) http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif Wyv |
