All right. I love rpg's. I keep hearing about wizards and warriors. I am guessing by how many of you are in this forum that there must be something to it. I'm really jonesing for a great new game to hold me over until ToB, and I would appreciate some honest opinions about w&w. What do you like about it?

Hi Milamber!

W&W is tough to get into initially, not an "easy fit" like the Baldur's Gate games. If you have the patience to work through a sometimes cumbersome interface and some irksome design decisions/bugs, you'll have a very enjoyable romp. The more you play, the more you'll gain an appreciation for the game. Be prepared to spend a while, though, working at the grizzled shell to full appreciate the nuttiness inside ^.^ Your patience will be justly rewarded! For hints, stories, & tips, feel free to cruise to the archive (see signature.)

Greetings Milamber!!

W&W if a fun game - certainly the best CRPG I have played in a long time. Unlike my friend Sun-slip - I found W&W easy to get into quickly. I'll admit also that I am no fan of the BG games or interface.
You might also want to do a search for similar threads. Try keywords like: "any good" or "buy". If you cannot locate them, let me know and I'll ferret them out for you!

Hi Milamber,
This is definitely a great game, there are some great dungeons and neat weapons in the game. And a lot of the voice acting is good, fun and funny. Some of the animations (especially in the towns) are odd, though.
As said earlier, it is tough going at first, but I think the game really draws you in and all the petty annoyances don't seem to matter much.

By the way, looking at your username, do you happen to be a fan of Raymond Feist books?

It is a great game. Many here at the forum are playing it over. I agree with Wyvern, I got in to it easily and stayed with it. Someone once said "WW is like a good book, you can't stop playing and you hate to see it end." Can't put it any better than that. I bought it for my adult daughter, she loves it too. Get it and come back to see us, this is your forum too!

go for it! the user's point of view is a much better than the
bird's point of view(watching over the characters instead of being a character yourself).

Hey Milamber you should get it, its pretty fun! I've just started really and still getting used to things but enjoying it! If I wasnt so tired I'd be playing it right now!

Black Knight 04-09-2001 08:15 PM

I got the game this past weekend. I played it for 8 straight hours Saturday. Took me a while to get the hang of first person type movement (I am also a big fan of BG, BGII, IWD, and awaiting ToB) But I played Might and Magic many moons ago, and this is similar, but better. I am still on the first dungeon, but it is pretty neat. If you are looking for a straight up shoot the bad guys, this is not the game for you. If you are looking for a game where you get problem solving AND the satisfaction of putting some bad guys in the ground, this is not a bad game for you . . . I like it, and I am sure I will be posting in this forum a lot for the next few months http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Of course, that is just mho. Only way to find out is to try it yourself!

I would imagine, Black Knight, that the one big drawback you're probably facing right now is not being able to strategically place your characters (rear for spellcasters, front for warriors). That's the one benefit I see on the Infinity engine with the 3/4 down look. I cut my teeth on the 1st person perspective games and have trouble getting into the 3/4 down view games, but I'm getting better at them.

"Repel" and "Lure" help the strategic placement, BTW. Few people remember to use those spells, even at the beginning.

Sazerak, I'm liking it! I gotta catch up to BK though, he's ahead of me! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif Oh yea, I think a fair amount of people are giving it a shot now from General Discusions. Cloudy said she may get it too!

Cool, Lord of Alcohol! The interesting thing is, now that BG2 is starting to dampen down a bit, I think a lot of the players are going to be checking out W&W...probably will create a second "run" on the game. Stupidest thing HPI could have done is come out head-to-head against BG2...they creamed them on store sales.

However, it will be interesting to see how many W&W veterans migrate to BG2! Hehe.

-Sazerac

Lord of Alcohol 04-09-2001 09:51 PM

Well I do think the BG/BGII/IWD system is a little more agile in terms of telling your characters what to do. I mean should I really have to take my whole party swimmimg/drowninghttp://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif to get something? But I do like the face to face combat and lots of other stuff! Right clicking on the mouse and zinging down the trails/dungeon is fun!

Sazerac 04-09-2001 11:23 PM

Lord of Alcohol: That's the best thing...the fun part of the game makes the problems just a trifle, really.

Topside for Charlie!

Charlie 04-10-2001 02:43 PM

First impressions (gonna show my age here) are, it appears a little like Dungeon Master (anyone remember that?) If so, then I'll definitely get into it. DM was the first ever RPG/CRPG (dunno what the difference is) dungeon crawl type game that I ever played and I enjoyed it immensely. I followed that up with DM2 & Eye of the Beholder many moons ago. Am I right in thinking it's along those lines?

I think I'm sold already regardless, I just hope I can get it over here. Is it very old?

Thanks for the bump Wyvern http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

One love, peace.

Sazerac 04-10-2001 03:08 PM

Charlie: you should be able to find it at Best Buy, CompUSA, Circuit City, or any of the large software wholesalers. It's only been about about 7-8 months...came out about the same time BG2 hit the shelves. (Stupid marketing decision, heheh!) Anyway, you shouldn't have to look too hard for it, and it's probably at a discount as well.

-Sazerac

P.S. Dungeon Master is a good call. It's like a 3D accelerated version of the old 1st person "dungeon crawls".

Charlie 04-10-2001 03:17 PM

Thanks Sazerac although I'm not too sure any of those stores have outlets in London. I'll have a ring round tommorrow. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Did you play DM btw?

One love, peace.

Cloudbringer 04-10-2001 03:37 PM

Ok, I'm seeing enough of my fellow BG2'ers are trying it and not running aways screaming and tearing their hair out...soooo I'm going to look for it.

I really love the IWD and BG2 interfaces (improved from BG1) so I'm not sure how I'll like this '1st person view'. And as LoA says, you have to take the WHOLE party when doing something? Um, can someone give me more info/advice on that, please? Maybe a bit more description of what you see, types of actions that can be taken, etc.

I see Sazerac mentioning something called lure/repel spells in conjunction with battle strategy to help with pc placement?

I am waiting for ToB, as are most of us diehard BG2 players, but I have no problem checking out a new game! I'm not weary of BG2 yet, haven't even finished a game yet! Hope to do so with my multi-play game. So I may not get to playing W &W as much as BK and LoA seem to be! But then again, they've seen the end of BG2 already! LOL

I learn these things pretty quickly, but I can say that a bad/buggy interface design is the one sure way to kill my enthusiasm for any computer game/program.

Basically, when you are in an area where you have to go like underwater for something, the whole party is involved in the effects of drowning...you can't seperate one guy to dive in a pool for something. You'll be seeing it as a first person perspective but will be able to make any of your party members "active" in case you need like the Breath of Air spell to navigate larger bodies of water like the Sea or the underwater city.

Like, I hope I did not confuse you more! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

On another note...I had some serious crashing problems with my first install and an attempt to play with inadequate memory. Once the memory was upgraded and I installed the game again, I played without error from start to finish.
