SPECIAL SPORTS EDITION UPDATE: SHIVA LOVECRAFT WINS AGAINST MANTRAPS IN SECOND-ROUND, HEAD-TO-FROND ACTION!

Well, Gael Serran sports fans, once again we return to the arena of the Shire, where our contender, Shiva Lovecraft, once again challenges the Amazoni Mantraps in a deathmatch contest for a purse of 100 ducats provided by our own Si, keeper of the Gael Serran League Stats Journals!

Skywalker, our sports writer, provides these details:

Shiva Lovecraft had become a Paladin to build up her body so she could try again. She was fairly upset about being disqualified because of using a Serpent Staff and she really needs the money (you know how expensive it is in the Gael Serran!). Unfortunately, while in Shurugeon Castle, she met Lysandra and fell prey to her obvious charms. So now she is also a Vampire (Human Female Paladin Vampire Lvl 12 after Lvl 14 Wizard).

She had decided to take the challange and battle an Amazoni Mantrap ("I'm a woman, why should it want to attack me?" she had said) without the use of weapons. She also decided to make it more dangerous by attacking it sans armor or magic jewelry (she had to pay to have her Vampire Ring removed). The only problem was that when she fought barehanded (and barebacked) she missed alot and did 1 point of damage on average. This would not do. She decide to Vampire Bite her opponent instead. Now biting a Mantrap is fairly tasty, on par with maple syrup, but it does not restore Hit Points, so it became nigh impossible to survive. Sara became concerned that she'd be disqualified again because she decided to cast Merlin's Shield again this time around. To quote:

Quote:

" I may be be crazy to do this with no real protection, but I'm not stupid! Being all alone, there is no one there to take you're body to be resurrected, and since I can't heal myself with potions or spells and the vampire bite doesn't work on the Traps, I'm not so sure that I am not being stupid! But, a challenge is a challenge, and I don't see any other brave or crazy souls setting forth to the task. So I'm going to try again!"
(For some odd reason, the Vampire Bite does not work if nothing is in the left hand, sort of like the kung fu kick anomaly. The bite is always out of range. I didn't want her to carry a shield into the fray, so she chose to carry a lantern instead. She didn't want to be accused of cheating for having a shield equipped!)

http://www.wizardrealm.com/gse/Mantrap1.jpg

(Look at that action, folks! You can see clearly the second Mantrap approaching from a distance!)

So as you can see in the exclusive photo (2 to choose from actually), she was victorious. She hopes the Merlin Shield thing doesn't cause her to lose, but seeing as she is all alone in the contest, she feels confident.

There is a 2nd Mantrap in the photo so her work was only half done, and she dispatched that one as well!

http://www.wizardrealm.com/gse/Mantrap2.jpg

So what is next? She intends to put bite on Haleabus and if she has the chance she may take on Erathsmedor, "I'm getting very tired of that half-blind idiot setting my butt on fire everytime he's in my vicinity! I wonder what Dragon blood tastes like?"

Be afraid, Erathsmedor! Be very afraid! --(editor's comment)

_______________________________________________
Well, there you have it, folks. Since the "rules" of the challenge was that the contender only had to face the Mantraps barehanded (or fanged, in this case), Shiva Lovecraft is the first clear winner in the contest, Merlin's shield or no. It is up to her to claim the prize, of course. I don't think there will be any problem with payout; after all, who would want to stiff a vampiress?

Keep watching for further editions of the Gael Serran Examiner. Remember: Minds that need examining want to KNOW!

wow! I'm impressed! Jungle Lilies be afraid VERY afraid!

skywalker 03-26-2001 05:41 AM

Shiva wants to know if anyone would be interested in pics of a Vampire vs. Dragon match up. The sporting bug has certainly bitten her.

Though she's unsure she'd be interested in a one on one contest with Erathsmedor in her underwear. She asks if there is any money in this endeavor. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Torin offers 10000000 gold pieces to witness this battle.

skywalker 03-26-2001 06:00 AM

Adam,
Your answer was priceless!!!
I'm sure Torin has the cash to back it up, too!
Thanx, for the BIG laugh! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Ok, so what rules would apply against the dragon? Ezra will match Torin's contribution to the award money to see the vampire be victorious over the dragon. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...les/scream.gif

Great article guys! Thanks and we look forward to more news and sports!

Mammawlin

P.S. You wouldn't really *hurt* the dragon, right? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/fight.gif

Scronan 03-26-2001 12:29 PM

Hmm, using Merlin's Shield? That's not a clean victory in my book.

http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/fight.gif

FOUL! FOUL! FOUL!

And someone saying my Pixie isn't up to the task We'll just see about that. And no sissy Merlin's Shield spells either. I'll post my results in a day or two.

Ok, I think what I need to do is fight the Mantraps bare backed and fisted first, then take on two Jungle Lillies.

Anyone care to wager a bet? Or will my Pixie be plant food?

Lets see, going for Erathsmedor is pretty brave. I'd say duke it out with the Sphinx...or the Hydra. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Mantraps, watch out....Vesper is on your trail!!!!!!

HA HA HA HA!

Shiva, the Vampiress who last fought the mantraps, was the one who said your Pixie wasn't up to it, Scronan. (She's gotten very headstrong and obnoxious of late.) With no jewelry or armor and no spells, I can't see how she could survive. You have to realize that a Zenmaster can use heal potions, whereas a Paladin/Vampire cannot-they have no effect. And biting Mantraps gains no increase in hitpoints. There is no way to survive it without the spell.

Mamawlin: On my first time through, my characters killed no good NPC, this time through Shiva is tempted, for 20000000 gold pieces she just may do the dirty deed.

So the next level to this challenge is this:

Fight a Mantrap with no weapons armed,
No armor worn,
No jewelry,
No enhancing spells (like Merlin's Shield),
And if Merlin's Shield is out, you cannot use healing spells or potions.
(Not sure if you can use Cure Poison though!)

Take your best shot.

Adam, couldn't you just fight the dragon, http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...rcadefreak.gif get some screen shots for the Examiner and then reload your game so you don't have to leave him dead? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/hippy.gif
Ezra the Vampire would really love to see this and she is willing to pay-up!

"Why must you knight-errants out to make a name for yourselves always pick on us dragons?" asked once a dragon, Draco was his name.

Thank you, Lexus, for reminding us of the important things in life (like Dragons)! :

Since I am way past the Amazoni point in my current game now, I would have to "bow out" of this competition. Being that three of my characters are experienced in Kung Fu, it would be a moot point, anyway. I will say that the four of them encountered three Jungle Lilies RIGHT at the entrance to the Isle of Sands, (where the pathway meets the Lost Sea) and just ran over them without a "by-your-leave" like a Ronco salad shooter. After a while in the game, it does get a bit easy. Well, they did have to walk around to get over their nausea afterward, but that was easy enough, too. Oh well!

Scronan 03-26-2001 11:15 PM

Hail,

Well, it is true that hunting down Mantraps would be too easy, but its turned into a great story!

Here is a preview from Chapter 5 of the Tales of Scronan:

The Tales of Scronan will continue soon with the heroic story of Vesper out to fight Mantraps bare handed. And for the record, he has nothing with him, save a bag of gold to give to those in need. Although well versed in all schools of magic, it is only used outside of battle or to help the injured and sick.

Last night he journered far for the Mantraps, but alas could not find any. His fellow party members became quite enraged at him, most notably his wife, Xiquan.

At eye witness in Brimloch Roon reported the following:

"After the demise of Cet, the party of 6 adventurers, 5 of which were Zenmasters were found passed out in the inn after many days of druken debauchery. Upon hearing of the decree to fight Mantraps single handed, many of the patrons of the inn thought it a joke."

Daron, a local Ooomphaz Barbarian read the post and laughed long and loud at the decree. Weighing in at close to 400 pounds, he saw the challenge and far too easy.

"Bah! I eat Mantraps for breakfast, with a touch of lemon and basil. I'd like to see one of those puny Pixies try this. Why, I leave things in the outhouse that weight more than one of those little winged insects!"

Upon hearing this act of racial prejudice, Vesper Jillanarick was quoted with the following:

"We'll see about that, you fat bloated excuse for a Barbarian. I'll journey alone, without armor, spell, potion or sword, and take out every monster left in the Gael Serran."

The Ooomphaz laughed, and after taking a clumsy swing at the miniscule Zenmaster, he suddenly was hit with a barrage of lightning fast kicks and punches, and felt to the floor unconscious.

"That there little green man whupped his elephatine ass, and whupped it good." said a local patron of the inn. "I'd hate to see what happens if someone had insulted his mother."

After the 3 second battle with the Barbarian, it seemed that nothing could stop the determination of the young Pixie. After numerous protests by his friends, he stripped down to his loin cloth, and left all of his wordly possessions to his friends.

His wife, Xiquan said the following:

"Ah, my foolish husband, doesnt he realize that we have already won the battle with Lord Cet? I know the prejudice that the Pixies have faced, so I couldnt say no to him on his journey. I pray that Kerah watches over him."

The young Gnome was in tears and left to the comfort of her companions, one of which spoke out on his friends behalf.

"He's a brave little man, that Vesper is." said Scronan, leader of their Group of Six. "I wanted to travel with him and kick some Mantraps into cole slaw, but alas he wished to travel alone. I wonder how he fares now?"

Only time will tell if the young Pixie will survive his encounter.

Already, eyewitness reports are piling into the Gael Serran news rooms, and rare captivating posters of the brave little green man will be posted shortly.

It is said after leaving Brimloch Roon, Vesper made his way to Ishad Na, defeating nearly 20 Ratling Sneeks, 10 Mountain Spiders and quite a few Worgurs that foolishly attacked him.

Torin, a local Samurai had met with the Pixie, who said he hurried off to go hunting for mantraps.

"Hai, that little green man must have been poisoned by the Orochi himself, I have never seen such determination in a winged one. I care not for such things, for I have finally found my fortune in life. Some strange man approached me, seeking purgatory and gave me all of his life savings, which totalled 10,000,000 Gael Serran Gold Crowns. Now, I will open a chain of martial arts dojos, and finally be able to marry Master Wu's daugher, Yuki."

The brave Samurai was busy writing up plans for his dojos and spouting words of love poetry, and was little help in providing the whereabouts of Vesper.

Another witness saw him enter the Boogre Caves, mounted on none other than the Uber Horse of legend!

Said Jathril, a wandering sage:

"What a site it was! A young Pixie, bounding through the hills on the Uber Horse, galloping at full speed. Every now and then a Ratling Sneek or a Highland Raider would rush him, only to be met with a swift kick which rendered them unconscious. A regal flag stating "Mantraps make good Cole Slaw" was hanging from the saddle, flapping away in the wind. That is something you don't see every day!"

Other reports have mentioned that Vesper entered the Boogre Caves, and singly handedly entered the fighting arena, defeated several Boogres, including the leader of one of the warring factions, without even so much of a stratch. He questioned them all on the whereabouts of the Jungle Lillies, but his search still turned up empty.

It is unknown at this time where the young Pixie is now, but stay tuned for a full report, including local interviews, pictures and a stunning display of affection by helping out a Boogre who had been trapped in the teleporter maze.

Stay tuned from Chapter 5 from the Tales of Scronan!

Ok, let's put it in perspective here. Shiva is only a 12th level Paladin from a 14th level Wizard. I guess you could say that equals 26th level whatever. This is not a high level character at the end of the game. I'm not even sure if bites work with the To Hit number either. She isn't really a super character, and really this is just for fun.
No slams were seriously meant against any players, it was just the probable attitude of a character, acting like a real world sport type professional. They usually bash all other contenders! I hope I haven't caused any ill will here.

As far as "offing" the dragon, as I said earlier, I played by the rules the first time through. I'd like to try going the other way and play it the evil way and end the game accordingly. I'm not doing it for exp points, but just for a different experience. If the game would punish you for such behavior, my character would just have to deal with it. I guess it goes against my personal beliefs, but I won't let the evil acts change me! http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...miles/wink.gif

I'm still a nice guy...really I am!

Mark

Sazerac 03-27-2001 12:33 AM

Hmmm, Mark...respectfully, I would beg to differ with you. Since levels are logarithmic (increasing amount of experience needed to level -- uchh...math!) up to a certain level when they turn linear (same level of experience needed to level up), your combination would probably be equivalent to a 16th or 17th level "whatever". It's still very impressive, all the way around.

I don't think any slams were made against any characters; at least, I never read anything like that. I think our forum members are having fun "challenging" the Mantraps in a sporting-like event. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...es/biggrin.gif

Have fun!

Hi Mamma,

Well, I dont know about sports, but we'll see some comedy and humor find its way into the tale. There's a lot at stake here, racial equality, and mostly the honor of the Pixie Clan.

And of course, the secret of Dragon Okabu Brew. http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Stay tuned! Vesper was last sighted leaving the Boogre Caves aboard the Uber Horse, but his destination is unclear.

Scronan however, is going back to the Toad Village....

Take care!

What, Wyvern? You wouldn't want to see a Highland rogue in a black Bikini Thong? LOL!!!!

-Sazerac

Scronan 03-28-2001 02:25 PM

Swimsuits might be fun!

I remember a thread from ages back about the imbalance of the sexes in this game. There are only a few female NPC's, and tons of men like Smitty with big hairy arms, or long winded speeches.

Those Gwyll gals are half naked already...hmm...maybe there are some single Centaurs who would like them...or do they date "two stepper" women?

How about Erzebette and Gorthius at the beach? http://www.tgeweb.com/ironworks/cgi-...iles/smile.gif

Scronan

Sazerac 03-28-2001 03:57 PM

Alicat and I were having a conversation in e-mail just recently about the way female NPC's are treated in RPG's. WW is better about it than most games, but there is still a bias against females. Why aren't there any female guild-masters, for example? The only two notable female NPC's in the game are Kerielle and Erzebette, unless you count Elyssia and the Boogre hags as well (which are more opponents than NPC's).

This may be worthwhile starting another thread to discuss.

-Sazerac
