Am planning my roles ascensions for the second time thru . . . was wondering what I can and can't do as a vamp. Will I still be able to use my magic? Will I lose my traits? I have heard they can't use weapons. The one I had in mind is currently sporting Kerah's sword and I like it. What special abilities will I have and how well do they work? All I see is Bite in my manual . . . have heard toughen spell will "heal" hit points but not cure the condition.

Dwarf 01-08-2001 03:39 PM

My experiences so far.Vampires are immune to healing spells. They are immune to healing potions(I found this one out and was dissappointed). They can use the Vampires bite attack but it doesn't work, even with the patch it claims that they're out of range (even if you're standing on the monsters heads- I have done this, I know). If they don't make successful attacks they suffer blood starvation and die.Aparently the starvation comes of temporary hit points (ie. Toughen) first. They are also immune to healing scrolls. There are no bonuses (they don't even turn into turquoise skinheads in split-to-the-naval evening gowns, some graphics designer had a twisted immagination). There is virtually no point in becoming a vampire that I am aware of unless you've read Winter Warriors by David Gemmel (old retiring soldiers face ancient vampires who wear black full plate armour to avoid sunlight and do not need to rest).

Oh, and you don't loose any traits or skills, all you're old spells work normally unless they're healing ones in wich case they don't work on you.

HMMMM . . . rethinking the vampire whiskah babe. Sounds like NO fun . . . except with the vampire ring don't I get regeneration? I wanted to bite someone, DRATS!

I was curious yesterday, and since I was at that point in the game again I gave it a try; save your game just before meeting Lysandra and then have fun with it. Accessing the bite with the trait button (as far as I know, the only offensive trait besides Evil Eye), run around biting things.

Despite rumours to the contrary, the bite works remarkably well, doing sometimes as much as 30 damage to the creature getting bit, but averaging between 10 and 15 on my Ninja Vampire. It seems that you only get blood from living creatures (skeletons and ghosts, for instance, don't work), but I suppose that makes some degree of sense. Also, some creatures will give you more blood than others. It's really a fun trait, and extremely useful if the character has no decent weapons (READ: though you can still use weapons, you won't want to because every creature you see you'll have to bite to get blood; this sucks if you've got weapons more powerful than around 10-15 average damage).

IMPORTANT: If you really want to go for it, pick someone who has a LOT of HP, and I mean well into the hundreds, 'cause even then you'll always be looking for something to bite, even at spawn often.

Conclusion: The bite can be a potent weapon, and can turn an Oomphaz Warlock with absolutely no weapons skills into one of your strongest attack people; high HP is the key, and someone who sucks with weapons 'cause you'll never use 'em again. In the end, I decided that it sucked (I'm playing through with one character, named Loner, and his weapons are stronger than the bite), and after about 30 minutes reloaded before Lysandra and killed her

It would be really nice if the patch would let the bite work.My computer seems to have an aversion to letting me do this. All the patch has done for me so far is disable the ability to skip dialogue in town.

GAU: NOT ANOTHER ONE CHARACTER PLAYER! Sounds so hard but with all those points you must be MEGA death! Am trying to screw up the courage to have my four newbies leave the old zenmaster at the inn. AHHHHHH! So you don't attack normally you use the special traits button . . . THAT IS USEFUL! Was that your glitch Balgin? I hope so! So she could use Kerah's sword but probably wouldn't want too. HM. And if I want a lot of hit points it should be someone from a race who is hardy and has been a barbarian from the git go. HM. (hamster running on wheel) Still cannot picture the Oomphaaz vampire . . . trunk gets in the way. Must ponder this some more. Have slots picked for all my characters . . . hm. Tanks, I'll mull this over! You guys been very helpful!

Darn <BACK button! Sorry!

Dwarf 01-08-2001 05:02 PM

No, I always used the Trait button, I just got a text message telling me that the monster was out of range, even if I was inside it's pixels! This is even with the patch (wich was suposed to fix that problem, it says so in the patch readme but it never works for me, that's why I tend to kill vampires).

Junker 01-08-2001 05:12 PM

Its true that the trait doesnt work, but it seems just on certain computers,,I had it also, and there was just no way I got it to work.....I got the message I wasnt close enough all the time also even thou I could smell the monsters breath..

Erad 01-08-2001 05:40 PM

Vampire mode wasnt fully thought about during development, I think. They just added it that the game would be more "spicy".Personally, I would like that vampires would be hurt by sunlight (hehehe), and be harmed by water.Gotta go, cya on friday

Hi Lily

I think I'm one of the few dolts that finished the game with a vampire, since I didn't know what I was doing when I met Lysandra. My character was a female elf, who then was a Rogue and later became a Samurai, Ninja, Paladin, Warlock, Assassin, Ranger, then finally a Zenmaster. Yeah, she saw some class changes, which you will see if you see my save file!

Anyway, I never saw the bite do 30 damage, but I guess that varies on class or something? For the female Elf, the bite did 4-16 damage most of the time. here are the pros and cons:

Pros:

1. Powerful at night. You will get combat bonuses that are noticeable. When my character was a Ninja fighting barehanded, with 12 Kung Fu skill I saw her do almost 40 damage in one hit, without hiding in the shadows or being beserked.

2. Biting - Not all that powerful and kind of a pain, but it can cause critical hits if you have death strike! If you kill some poor sucker (heh) with a critical bite, you will get to slurp a ton of HP, but this is really random. Most of the time, especially at higher levels, it doesn't give you much back. It can paralyze enemies, but won't work on the undead.

3. Ice Breath - You gotta get this from Adrianna, and its kind of cool, but the Moon spell counterpart is the same thing. I gave my vampire dragon breath too, as well as Evil eye, so she is pretty powerful.

Cons

1. Weaker fighting during the day - This kind of sucks, not very noticeable, but alas it is so.

2. HP Drain - If you're going to be a vamp, I suggest waiting until Skull Castle, then getting the Vampire Ring (need the patch or game go crashy crashy). You'll be stuck with it, but you get whoop ass resitance bonuses, and it stops the HP Drain! Note: Regeneration doesn't seem to help the Vampire bloodthirst drain.

3. Can't use healing spells or potions. And a resurrection spell starts you back nearly dead again. The Vine of Life Spell can give you a little more time until you kick the bucket if you don't have the ring.

Things to Do if you are dying to have a Vampire in your party:

1. YOU MUST rely on the fiend spell of Lifesteal. So, it would be best to get this ASAP prior or soon after getting vamped. Note: This spell can steal life from ANYTHING (might be some exceptions), even the undead! I used to laugh when my elf would suck life from a mummy, vampires kick ass!

2. Get the !@#$#$# Vampire Ring! Also get Ice Breath, if you're gonna be a vamp, might as well get it all.

3. You must be really patient. Overall, I would say the Cons outweight the Pros. I really think it sucks (heh, another pun!) that you can't get vampirism cured. Boogrism can be cured, but this can't and it really changes your character. PLEASE DWB, either leave this out of WW2, or make a cure! Its a royal PITA!

Well, that about sums it up. Vampire are interesting, and its going to make my ongoing fanfics really interesting...I wish being a vampire would make NPC's and townfolk act differently towards you, but I think even Spaceship Warlock had a better AI than WW. Actually, SW is the grandaddy game of them all, and still one of the best!

Happy Vamping!

WOW! I printed that out Scronan! It will be extremely helpful as I purposely installed the patch to do the vampire thing! Now I can plan better. I am chickening out and going with 5 character. Cluck! Cluck! Rumor has it there is a fake posting site for those of us with CPD. REMEMBER MY FRIEND . . . spread it thinly!

carg 01-10-2001 04:05 AM

I agree with Scronan, except I must disagree that I'm a dolt
To me the cons pretty heavily outweighed the pro's, also because the afflicted character has been a monk and while biting did as much as 20 damage average, his double bare-handed attacks did over 50 at the end. The closest thing to a problem my party ran into at the latter stages was that the hydra seemed to dislike vampires, so my ex-monk got all the attacks, and I couldn't cure him with my healer. But he survived. (My 3 character party was WAY more effective than my first party of 6.)
By the way, lifesteal didn't seem to work on skeleton-like enemies: it did damage them, but no HPs were returned.
If you're going to try being a vampire: keep a savefile from before: you might want to give up and return to normal.

Lorelei 01-11-2001 09:24 PM

I had the ring, had the patch, and still had the hit point drain. It was definitely not worth it, so I reloaded. The ring is nice to have anyhow.
