The Real Joel 09-24-2002 02:56 AM

I at the moment have Khalid and Jaheira in my party and find them fairly useful. Jaheira's OK fighting and healing skills and Khalid being an OK fighter, but morale breaks....grrrrrr they get ya angry in the heat of a hard battle! I was just wondering what everyone else thinks of them and if you think i should keep them or not. If not who would be the best two replacements?

Jan 09-24-2002 03:14 AM

I have them in my party as well. They are pretty good but VERY annoying . Wouldn't mind kicking them out but I haven't found any suitable replacements yet so they'll stay a little longer.

The Real Joel 09-24-2002 03:16 AM

I agree with ya 110% VERY annoying but i have also not found any good replacements yet. Who else do you have in your party?

The Ozzman 09-24-2002 05:17 AM

If youre a good aligned party, i say stick to the story and keep them in your party, they are friends of Gorion for god sake!

Jan 09-24-2002 05:48 AM

Good point The Ozzman.

I have Minsc, Kivan, Dynaheir and myself a mage/thief. It is a pretty good party.

Khalid is, in my opinion, the best melee fighter in the game. Sure, his strength isn't great, but he gets a lot of hit points and has a decent AC if you give him the right equipment. Jaheira is the best druid. Just make sure to give her the bracers of dexterity, and you're all set. She gets a lot of spells, and many hit points. She doesn't make too bad a back-up fighter either... so long as you buy the +3 quarterstaff in Ulgoth's Beard.

Keraptisdm 09-26-2002 02:50 PM

Jaheira died in a battle in Highhedge. Khalid didn't really seem all that upset. Can you blame him? Anyhow there's Jaheira lying in a heap on the ground and me wondering how I'm going to get back to the temple to raise her, when along comes Kivan. Reform party, remove Jaheira, add Kivan and I didn't even have to listen to Jaheira's rant! Heh.
So, I kept Khalid and not his now deceased wife. :D Imagine my surprise in the first dungeon in BG2?

Somewhere, I am not sure where, but I found Gauntlets of Ogre Power STR-20, Couple that with High Mastery(****) of the Large Sword, Pick your poison there as I have him carrying 4 different kinds so I can switch depending on the enemy that he is facing, and the Helmet of Kiel which I found in Durlag's Tower which keeps him from getting terrified at the sight of a Gibbering and My Kahlid is a walking steamroller. I love him and Keep Jaheria around to hear her crack on Xzar.

Keraptisdm 09-27-2002 10:19 AM

Amazing what a good pair of Isotoners will do for Khalid, eh? ;) I did that too, Mr. B. Great, demented minds think alike.

Who was it that said that it is the look that makes the man?

Lord Brass 09-27-2002 01:06 PM

Spikey helmets are a must then! I'm pleasantly surprised that people actually bother with Khalid. I found the guy a total annoyance. His missus would have gone too, if I hadn't invested so much time and money on her. Maybe I'll try 'em again. The problem could have been that Khalid was in the "Death-Seat"TM, you know, slot number 2 in your party line-up. If they're going to die, I find that position to be lethal for any character. 'Course, I could be imagining things.

He is also supposed to be one heck of an archer as well...that way you can put him in the 3 or 4 hole.

NiceWorg 09-28-2002 05:36 PM

Both are absolutely worth having. You can complete the game with both of them in your party. Jaheira is the difficult one, I always thought she was a bit useless in my 1st games party, but during the game I grew a weird relatioship with her and therefore couldn´t throw her out anymore, even though I wanted to. I had four archer/fighters in my party; me, Khalid, Minsc and Imoen. And I tell you, Khalid makes a great archer.

If you ask me, none of the characters are really annoying. They would be if they would interrupt the game every ten seconds, but overall everyone stay pretty quiet.

Lord Brass 09-28-2002 07:31 PM

Hhmmm, I've got to stop fooling around with the IE for IWD, 'cause I thought I had Khalid in my first "completed" party (though it's so long ago I can't remember). I also thought I gave the useless b*gger the 'Gauntlets of Ogre Might', or whatever they're called in BG, as well as Kiel's basinet. Still didn't improve my opinion of Khalid though. I'll have to go back and have a look.

Khalid could be good, as he is one of TWO pure fighters in the game, and thus has the weapon specialization available.

Well, up to High Mastery anyway.

They're fine, although I often find myself wanting to smash Khalid over the head with a blunt object (I like clerics :D )...

Hey! No fair Mr. Baggins!! Your avatar is no longer the creepy looking dude with the veins bulging out of his skull! :( I guess that is incentive to get my post count up, but I refuse to do it with spam.

Lord Brass, that could be another topic thread - "The perils of the number 2 slot" Khalid was not the best choice for the number 2 position; I used Ajantis in that postion.

I wish my name was Baggins 10-01-2002 10:35 AM

Yeah and all that you got for it was the kreepy four eye and a pyramid thing??? What the heck is that all about?

ryaldin 10-01-2002 10:43 AM

At leas you don't still have these snazzy dungeon dice. Hi. I'm ryaldin an i'm THIS many (holds up eight, no....nine fingers).

I like using

me (fighter)
imoen
kivan
minsc
dynaheir
yeslick

this seemed to be a really awesome party, with myself minsc imoen and kivan using bows, i mowed through the game pretty easily.

Lord Brass 10-01-2002 10:54 AM

Ah missile weapons. Gods bless them, and all who fire them in anger (but not at my party).

I can't speak for BG2 'cause I still haven't started. :D But in IWD were you can get some impressive levels, characters can still find a use for such weapons, no matter what their level. Such a comforting thought.

As God is my witness, I have no idea. Gives you the impression that big brother is watching. :D

I love missle weapons. And with DSOTSC (Dark Side of the Sword Coast) loaded, you can carry 50 arrows per quiver. No more halting in mid-quest, legging to a store to buy more arrows. Sweet. Realistic? No. Fun? Yes.

Lord Brass 10-01-2002 11:47 AM

Item stacks can be changed, and I think you can do it universally within the core rules. I'll have to have a look, as it saves topping up a quiver slot that's got fifty arrows in it already.

I wish my name was Baggins 10-01-2002 09:05 PM

Lord Brass Has it right about the amazing levels in Icewind Dale...I am in Chapter two...Have done hardly any of the side quests as I am just getting a feel for the game and my party is in the level six range.

SixOfSpades 10-02-2002 12:06 PM

Happily, my good computer is working again, and I can now re-open BG1. UNhappily, I'm now playing a Paladin, who's being a good girl and obeying Gorion's instructions: Khalid and Jaheira. I would MUCH rather substitute in Kivan and Branwen (or possibly Yeslick), as they are better in all respects than the Friendly Arm couple. Sure, Kivan can't get 3 stars in a weapon--so what? His higher STR and DEX will grant him a better THAC0 than Khalid anyway. And let's see Khalid go Stealth. And Cleric spells are MUCH more useful than Druid spells. Who the hell needs Animal Summoning I when you can Animate Dead?

Each character's Most Powerful Vanquished after returning to Nashkel--
Sanctimonia (my Paladin): Neira or Mulahey, I forget which
Imoen: Nimbul
Khalid: Diseased Gibberling
Jaheira: Kobold
Minsc: none (we'd just picked him up on the way back)

Montaron and Xzar died in the Mines--of natural causes, I might add, if you can call it that. It's not my fault that they didn't have enough hitpoints to survive a Critical Hit from a Kobold.
