I just have to ask this but did anyone think that the battle with the Black Dragon in chapter 5 was just slightly evil? You get a tiny arena, and any thing you summon will most likely wander off. *so wishes he could control elementals again* Not to mention the insane thing about thirty damage a hit. Took me five reloads to kill this thing without anyone dying. Which is *somewhat* ridiculous. Did the dragon give anyone else trouble?

I must agree that the balck dragon is unbalanced. But so are two wizards with mordekain's swords who can hack them down in three rounds!

The game has too many unbalanced battles. Really did you find that the four golems in the monks tomb are invincible? Did you manage to kill them?

The Dragon is not any stronger than any other Dragons in any other Infinity Engine game...

Is the game unbalanced, or is your party not balanced?

Yes the fight with the golems was *somewhat* unfair. Managed to kill though though with six elementals. They weren't too bad as long as you didn't try to take them all on at the same time. Mordenkaien's sword is a very cool spell. But a wizard and a sorcerer together with one is fun. It would've made the golems easier that's for certain.

I know that but when i'm fighting dragons, I usually have a lot more room to manuever. Wizards and such wouldn't be at the front line getting themselves killed.

Well you can move your party down the stairs, then summon him and make him come down. That gives you a lot more room.

I thought he was very tough, though less so when I realised you needed +3 weapons to kill him and I kitted everyone out properly ;) . Not unbalanced though I wouldn't say.

</font>
Exactly right!

Fighting the dragon on the platform is about the same thing as yelling "Kill me! Kill me!"

Fight the dragon away from the platform and spread out your party. Summon some monster cannon fodder to keep the dragon occupied. Full party buffing. Spare no expense. Use your best saved up ammo.

@Redblueflare Only 5 reloads? The Guardian is SUPPOSED to be REALLY tough! Without good tactics, your party should get whacked!

And don't bother whining about the 4 Iron Golems. You don't HAVE to fight them to progess. From the story's perspective, the Monks put 4 golems there to protect the tomb. They weren't trying to be "Fair" when they put 4 IG's around the tomb. This is one of those fights that should be monsterously difficult if you choose to not bypass it.

LOL, I positioned my party right at the entrance to the Underdark, had Imoen run break into the tomb, and then ran off before the golems could catch her!

Did the same thing with my first party. That is, after getting my ass SERIOUSLY kicked. ;)

Piestrider 12-23-2002 01:03 AM

Heh! i did pretty much the same thing except i felt kind of bad so i exported my character with all of the items and then reimported her in a previously saved game. That importing stuff sure comes in handy. :D
I now have two moonblades of selune. Works well, i must say.

I found it more advantageous to block the dragon so it couldn't escape the platform while I pelted it. I cast Otiluke's Resilient Sphere on a character who stood at the very bottom of the stairs. I did damage with missle weapons and summoned critters.

Killed it my first try without losing any characters in Heart of Fury mode.

I wouldn't have minded reloading that many times, if I was rewarded for killing the dragon in some way. 2700 exp. Whopee... Take him down the stairs never thought about that.

Considering at least half the stuff you kill gives you NO experience... I think that's pretty decent

Micah Foehammer 12-24-2002 12:19 PM

Amen! Nthing pi$$es me off more than fighting a horde of monsters and getting NO freaking xp except for MAYBE from the boss. At least the dragon gave a lot of xp when he dies.

The Guardian isn't that tough if you use the right tactics (and that doesn't include the resilient sphere cheese) - fought him right on the platform and took him down the first time with no deaths.

Grammar 12-29-2002 06:32 PM

Just going through the game the first time, and I fought him last night. First couple times I got blown away. I had +4 weapon and stuff, but I didn't seem to be doing any serious damage to him. The only thing I had which was very effective was my druid with Call Lightning and Static Charge. Thus, I surrounded him with my Fighter, Rogue (He's a reasonable warrior), and Ranger, and beat on him. I had my cleric memorize max heal spells and heal them when they got low on life. I had my druid just keep casting Call Lightning and Static Charge. I used the Sorceror to Stoneskin the frontliners and toss spells at the dragon. In the end, the dragon finally died to a call lightning spell.... woo!
