EDIT: Just edited your title, mate - I don't have a big problem with cussing per se as long as it's not excessive, but try and keep it out of the titles, because it just looks uncouth, you know what I mean?

When asking a question about a technical issue it is generally helpful to provide some specific information about your system and the version of the game you are running. For example, have you installed any of the official patches? What graphics card do you have?

Folks here are quite willing to help, but without knowing some specifics it's hard to give you an answer.

BTW - You might want to be a little more careful with your choice of language for post titles in the future. Your frustration is understandable, but cussing in post titles is against the Terms of Service here.

Try to change the grapich card driver to lates version and se if that help!

Mojo 07-17-2002 05:02 PM

I have the same problem...It only happens after I've been playing for a little while, when I start playing it's fine. I have a PIII 733Mhz processor, SB Audigy soundcard and ATI Rage Pro 128 Graphics card. I also have all the latest drivers, but it still happens. Help me please! It can be incredibly disruptive to gameplay, esp. combat.

I'm all for the cussing, gotta express shit that pisses you off after all

BlakJak Birkin 07-18-2002 02:14 AM

I've downloaded the official 1.06 patch, and i'm unsure of the graphics card i have

Cyril Darkcloud 07-18-2002 08:28 PM

BlakJak and Mojo, I've only had time to do a little bit of digging around and haven't found much on this particular issue. I did want to post, however, so you wouldn't think your questions were being ignored.

A quick question for the two of you, however: Do either of you have virus scan software running in the background while you're playing? I've noticed that some versions of the McAfee scan engine seem to produce behavior similar to what you describe with infinity engine games. This may also happen with other anti-virus products. If so, try rebooting and then disabling your anti-virus software and see how the game behaves.

I'll be away for the weekend and if no one else has found a solution by the time I get back I'll try and dig a little deeper into this question.

Cyril- I have a Pentium III 600Mhz with an Nvidia graphics card and a SB soundcard. I have all the latest drivers, and I don't have a virus scanner running in the background. The skipping has only occured since I installed the 1.06 patch (I previously installed the UK only patch- 1.05) It is odd that both Mojo (Scotland) and myself (Wales) have UK versions of the game. It has now started to freeze after the skipping starts. I am going to try uninstalling the game then re-installing it w/o the patch to see if this is causing the skipping. Thanks for your help, BlakJak Birkin (sorry for the earlier post title )

GoldfishInYourButt 07-19-2002 06:33 PM

PEOPLE could it be your CD drive i got a 56X, 700mghz,16mg video card and i never skip.

Well I have solved the problem (or 1 part of it), it's the patch that makes it skip, but I only installed the patch to be able to cheat, to get to an area I couldn't before. The game doesn't let you cheat without the patch installed :S - What do I do?
Thanks- BJ Birkin

Mojo 07-20-2002 12:18 PM

I was a little confused about patches and such, but when I borrowed the game off my friend, I installed Icewind Dale and Heart of Winter. to try and cure the skipping, I installed the patch for 1.06, and it really messed up my game, and my potion bag and scroll case went missing, along with a couple of my character portraits. I asked my friend and he told me that I don't need a patch if I have Heart of Winter, so I uninstalled it all and reinstalled Icewind Dale and Heart of Winter, and now, while the game still runs, it also still skips.

I find that it tends to not skip when I first start the game, and I found that if it starts to skip badly, restarting my comp helps. I reckon therefore that it might be a memory issue? Mine doesn't freeze completely, so I think I might actually have a different problem from BlakJak, or his might just be that much worse.

Anyway, I have the feeling that I'm talking crap so if anybody understood everything I just said, then well done :)

Mojo 07-20-2002 12:22 PM

Sorry, I forgot to mention that I don't have any antivirus programs running when I play Icewind Dale

BlakJak Birkin 07-20-2002 02:59 PM

Mojo- the skipping was my major problem, it used to freeze once or twice. Like you, the skipping only starts after I have been playing a while. Now I have reinstalled Icewind Dale without the patch, there is no skipping- I think your problem could be due to you having Heart of Winter installed, as this contains the 1.06 patch. I am beginning to think that the 1.06 patch may be unsuitable for UK versions of the game- on the Interplay site they list a 1.05 UK version patch, but when I installed this the cheat mode wouldn't work. I am not sure but you could try installing the 1.05 patch "over" the 1.06 version as found in Heart of Winter- don't blame me if it messes the whole lot up though! Cheers, BlakJak

andrewas 07-20-2002 04:10 PM

I have a UK version of the game and no skipping.

Theres a patch for HoW as well somewhere, which is needed for ToL. Which is a free official expansion for HoW.

If its starting after playing for a while, it could be a memory leak, in which case its not the game - its your drivers. Upgrade them, especialy graphics card drivers cos their updated far too fast, and motherboard cos everybody forgets to upgrade them. OR you might have set the cache too big (go into the cofig program, 140Mb usualy works fine) or not have enough RAM (go buy more, 64 Mb should be sufficient, 128Mb for preference).

Tyke-Wayln 07-20-2002 11:10 PM

I had what sounds like the same problem and it turned out the computer was using up to much RAM trying to handle all the game info being thrown at it while other programs were running in the background. (Printers, Antivirus Tools and the like) I only had to turn off unnessary programs in the start-up menu and reboot. It's worth a try at no cost.

BlakJak Birkin 07-21-2002 12:54 PM

GOOD NEWS!
I've managed to solve the problem- thanks andrewas- the cache was too high and now that I have lowered it, the game works great, even WITH the 1.06 patch installed.

MOJO- try setting your cache down to 100-150 and see if this will help.

*Unfortunately another problem has occured! (Not too bad though)
The game is now running at a refresh rate of 60hz (instead of the usual 85hz) I've put in a newer post so if anyone knows how to solve it can they get back to me asap.*

Thanks again for all your help, BJ Birkin

Cyril Darkcloud 07-21-2002 10:48 PM

Glad to see you managed to solve this problem, BlakJak. Thanks for the insight on the cache setting, ANdrewas

BlakJak Birkin 07-22-2002 04:53 AM

No no no no no!
I thought I'd fixed the problem, but now the game is totally freezing! It must be the 1.06 patch, I didn't get a single glitch when playing it before, the patch is what has caused all the problems. I have uninstalled the game *again* and I don't intend to put the patch on again- thanks to everyone who helped me out though! Cheers, BlakJak

BlakJak Birkin 07-26-2002 06:43 AM

And if anyone does know how to solve this problem please tell me , as I will be keeping this post open ;)

Thanks-

Cyril Darkcloud 07-26-2002 05:46 PM

BlakJak, I saw someone else report what seems to be a similar problem to yours on Balck Isle's IWD tech support message boards. A suggestion was made in that case to try disabling 3D acceleration and EAX as possible solutions. The thread can be found here

You might want to check out the those boards for other possible solutions.

Micah Foehammer 07-26-2002 05:59 PM

Mojo,

just an aside, but your friend is wrong about not needing any further patches for HOW. THere IS a later patch, v1.41 for HOW only.

Also make sure you guys are installing the patches in the proper order. One of the posts seemed to imply that someone had installed the v1.06 IWD patch AFTER HOW had been installed (this is a major no-no).

Cyril's advice about disabling EAX is excellent. If you can spare the space, try doing a FULL install instead of minimum or recommended. Reducing cache size should NOT speed up performance but rather should decrease it. I run with almost 800 megs of cache allocated.

Cyril Darkcloud 07-26-2002 07:59 PM

Thanks for the input, Micah. I was hoping you'd post on this as it's a problem I hadn't encountered before.

Micah Foehammer 07-26-2002 08:47 PM

Thanks Cyril. LOL I have to admit though that I caught this one by accident as Neverwinter Nights is eating up my gaming time in LARGE doses.
