So, now we have all struggled through months of Bhaalspawning and got to the end of SoA, who or what or where is Amn and what are his or her shadows ? I know about Amanautor (that cursed room with the letters on the tiles, I kept getting blasted until I realised that only one character needs to cross the tiles) and I know about Amniotic fluid (though not usually in this context)but I don`t get the reference to Amn.

Amn is the country you run around in - Athkatla is the capital

The BG series sometimes had a serious case of We-couldn't-think-of-a-better-name-itis. After all, the very name Baldur's Gate itself should have been left behind in BG1, as that's where the city IS. "Shadows of Amn" is just supposed to sound creey....oh, there's something dark and spooky moving around in Amn....Ooohhhh....

On a completely different note, wouldn't it be really funny/stupid if we were all Ilmater-spawn?
("I can be a bigger loser and suffer more pain and punishment than you!"
"No you can't! I'm an Elven Barbarian with only 9 CON!"
"Oh yeah? I'm a Half-Orc BARD!"
"Aw, man, he picked a worse character than me....")

er I thought the title was some sort of reference to the 'taint' inside you... the darkness etc... maybe I was wrong... then again it could also have a refernce to bohdi and her vamps... well thats what I thought it meant... ah well.

Dashael 06-02-2002 03:58 PM

Interesting, I thought the title was more a reference to the methods and contacts you had to use to reach your goal while in Amn. You'll get no spoilers out of me, but if you think about the associations you made in the game it should be apparent.

Actually, when you come to think of it, the bodhi reference is probably the best idea of where it came from. I originally thought that the reference was about the shadow of your presence on Amn itself.

Why thank you! you know it could mean all of those things or it could just be a 'flashy title'; or even one left open to interpriation... one of these days im gonna have to actually bother to spell 'stuff' right.. ;) *grins* or not...

Leofric the Unsteady 06-04-2002 06:29 AM

Calaethis, your spellings are a delight and we look forward to them. At least it is clear what you mean, which is more than can be said for Bioware with its daft title. If they meant (as Sunden suggests) a reference to your shadow passing over Amn, then they should have called it "Shadows on Amn". To call it Shadows *of* Amn means that it is Amn which is making the shadow, and plural ones at that, which means a multiple light source. How many suns does Amn have ? I am thinking of writing an expansion mod which adds a capital D in front of the word Amn every time it appears.

Ooo, good one. My own horrendously difficult idea would be to give the game a lisp: The lithsp would only thow up when the protagonitht ith talking; all the other thitithenth of Amn would thound perfectly fine. My protagonitht's name? Thamthon the Thithilian (he'th an Athathin.)

THe title is probalby linked to the fact that you have to associate with the Shadow Thieves' of Amn.

Dreamer128 06-05-2002 03:28 AM

Well, you do get to see all the dark sides of Amnish society(slavery, corruption, etc).

Calaethis Dragonsbane 06-05-2002 08:26 AM

Then there is the 'dark side' of you; the taint,,,

For a moment I thought we were talking Wheel of time here;)
But no, I don't think they mean the taint with 'shadows of Amn'.
If they would, Shadows of Bhaal would have been a more logical choice.

Obsidian the Black 06-05-2002 02:43 PM

It could mean the shadow thieves, because they play a big part in it even right from the begining when they attack Irenicus' dungeon?
