I have decided, after just completing it, that the Balduran's island subquest is the most frustrating to complete. The "beasties" are just so fast and strong, that I did have to reload numerous times due to losing my Thief or my Mage....cos there are just so damn many of them!!!
Does anyone think their is a more frustrating quest than this??? I've now done both major subquests in Ulgoth's Beard in the last 3hours, and I'm currently stood outside Durlags. Can't wait until I get to the fight of the wards again!! That's a wicked fight! I'm afraid....very afraid!!! |
I found the archaeological dig the most irritating. I thought "great, I've killed six wimpy miners, and I'm getting all this experience for doing squat" until I got outside, where I found a doomguard waiting for me. My party was at around level three by this time and far too weak to kill it. So I had to outrun the bastard in the end, which was annoying, as I wanted to do the quest properly.

you could've just left the idol there... as for annoying subquest. I dont' like Durlag's tower at all. i'm in the second floor of the basement, and those wards are a pisser

Try doing Durlags without a thief!

That dig was easy, although in the end I left the Idol there and skipped the guard...I was at a very low level when I got to him!!! I'm gonna go back for it I think....And If I'm correct, I can remember where the other idol is (in the cave with the coffins), but I cant remember what screen that is on, and I dont know what to do with them anyway. I just want the exp for the Doomguard!!!
And Durlags is extremely fun! I've just completed the top half, and I'm just about to enter the basements!! I cant wait til I get up to the wards again, it was one of my fave fights of the game!! And attempting to outfox Durlag Trollkiller without a theif is just plain stupid!!!! |
I absolutely hate that dungeon maze under Gullykin. The one infested with an infinite number of Commando Kobolds. You get virtuallt FA experience for returning the armor and killing LOTS of Kobolds and seemingly no matter how good you're AC, you WILL take a beating (which is unsuprising when you consider the fact that you're being constantly barraged by 1,000,000 flaming arrows) I hate Kobolds > :(
I likr the "family of zombies" quest the most. The +2 hammer is nice also |

Spoilers as to locations of various battles:
The top level of the shipwreck is very tough indeed. I wasn't that crazy about Balduran's island in general, but that is a good fight at the end. I found that is exceedingly difficult to win without summoning monsters or skeletons, and since I restrict myself from using those spells or wands I'm curious as to how several parties I'm currently using are going to fare there. (Hmm, although I do think it is very much in character for an evil necromancer or cleric to cast Animate Dead. Maybe I'll let them do that for the tough fights.) I really liked Durlag's. I enjoy the all the fights there, pretty much. The Firewine/Gullykin dungeon is torture. I didn't care for the Candlekeep catacombs all that much. Although chapter 6 is sort of dreamlike, dealing with false appearances and illusions. etc., and if a somewhat disoriented atmosphere was mostly intentional it was pretty well done. At that particular point I just didn't feel like doing any more dungeons, I think. I don't care for dungeon-crawling in BG1 because of it's lousy pathfinding. It's been ages now since I fought it, but I recall that the most satifsying battle for me was the one at the top of the Iron Throne, because in addition to being damned hard it goes on for much longer time than most fights. Some battles I enjoy taking on at low to mid level: Kahrk, the ogre mage at the Firewine Bridge assassins in the Gullykin map Osmadi and Corsone (druids in Larswood) Some of the battles are pissers with Dark Side, don't want to spoil anyone... except to say that one of the druid encounters in Cloakwood is wild! I still haven't done a lot of the fights in BG city. There must be easily be two dozen of them waiting for me. I've heard the Gorpel Hind and Degrodel's house fights are great fun. Very much looking forward to all that. |
The Firewine/Gullykin dungeons are very easy, when you know what you need to complete them. Either the Large Shield +1/+4 vs missile weapons or the Cloak Of Displacement. Or both. This can make 1/ or 2 people immune to arrow attacks.
The top level of Balduran's ship was a very hard fight, and that is why I made this thread. I casted haste, defensive harmony, bless, protection from evil. I cast mirror image on Dynaheir...I then made her cast resiliant sphere, so 2 beasts attackeed her, did no damage, but were taken out of the equation. I made Jaheria cast entangle. I then got all 6 members to attack the beasts 1 by 1, until only the Greater Wolfwere was left. Now he is incredibly hard to beat, and the 6000xp is just not high enuf!!! I gave both Khalid and Minsc Bastard Sword+1/+3 vs Shapeshifters, Khalid the wolfsbane necklace, and Dynaheir the dagger +4 shapeshifters. This way, I got him to take enough damage to die before he killed any member of my party. That's about how I did it!!! |

Its near Nashkel, to the west. I think its on the same screen as something else important...possibly I think Bassilius...It's in the North East of the screen!! Thats about all I can remember!

I have no idea how you find all this stuff youīre speaking about. I usually check every hole and chest but I rarely find anything useful, except wands or useless swords, or cursed items. Iīm only on Cloakwood though (which is probably the easiest part of the game). Oh and nevermind about that, I donīt even want to know.
Firewine dungeon has been the only really nerve-breaking battle. I entered to fight the ogre mage and the "ordinary" mage straight away and didnīt have any troubles with them, but regenerating commandos are really pain in the ***. I used a thief to scout the way down and used fireball to clean large groups of them, and regular arrow attacks on smaller groups. It took me 4 hours to complete the dungeon, although I didnīt take much damage in the end. A protective large shield would have been greatly useful. Nashkel mines were also difficult, because back then I didnīt know that the game regenerates enemies if you save and load all the time. Imagine that. |

I'm currently on another run through BG (to export to BG2) and jsut going through DT (after clearing the BG city and the other 2 TotSC areas).
For some reason all the battles are easier than I remember (and seem easier than BG2 as well). I'd struggled with the wolfweres last time, but found the 3 Greater Doppelgangers on DT level 2 the absolute worst - this time I've walked it all (and can't work out why!). The one battle I suffered a beating in this time around was the single Greater Doppelganger (posing as Durlag himself) - the stinking cloud knocked out all but my main char and the *&^&^*Ģ just beat up on poor Minsc... Good old resurrection. |
Hmmm, I have found the fights quite easy in general every time I have played it, but I have used the same fight tactics (even though with different party setups).
Also, I do that many subquests, my levels are usually very high compared to what they should be at that point in the game! |
that spider place in cloakwood was nearly impossible my first try. Imoen's find traps was like... 35%? and also, i thought you couldn't disarm traps with clerics, can you? so how can you go through durlags tower without a theif?
|

Try it...but it will you take you a long long time, and a reload count hittin the three zeros....

I didn't specify who the challenge was for - certainly not me, I've not got the patience...

Hardest fights for me
DT chess game. First i thought it was real chess, so my brother tried it and they swarmed on me. Then, we nuked em. I gave everyone fireball or flaming oil potions, or spells or wand, casted it at the same time, they dropped like flies. Doomsayer Fight Assassins in the Undercellar All of durlags tower. Imoen could dissarm any frikin trap. So i used tons of potions of perception. Firewine ruins is a pisser Yes, the top level of balduran's ship was REALLY rough. |
That bloody chicken Mellicamp. You take him all the way highhedge to get him changed back, you then have to go back out to fetch a skull. Once Thalantyr has the skull he starts his transformation spell and what happens the bleeding chicken exploads. You reaload your game knowing that this is random and that he doesn't always expload, and what happens? HE BLOODY WELL EXPLOADS AGAIN. And Again, and again, and again, and again. 2431 reloads later he finally changes back, and what do you get for your effort A FEW FRIGGING MEASLY Experience points. Now that is a frustrating quest.

frustrating? I don't know... I don't do a lot of quests, really. I guess the time of day sensative ones like the thief guild jobs. You have to be around at a certain place at a certain time. I always find it difficult to be in the right place at the right time in that city. The movement from area to area is also rather odd. You seem to "beam" over to really strange positions relative to where your start position was when traveling between city areas.
I think the most rewarding one is the Marl encounter at Feldpost's Inn. With a not so patient party, you can knock him out with fists every time you enter the inn. It's one of my favourite things in the first half of the game- to enter Feldpost's and have Marl go at you and knock him on the floor. Sometimes, I have my party wait there till he gets up again. Sure, you don't get the XP that way, but who cares? It's way more fun having a hostile Marl all the time. The same goes for Noober, too! He doesn't bother you anymore after that, and, in fact, runs from you all the while going, "heya." It's really quite amusing! |
