Have you called their tech. support?
Since all of us are going to be new to this game, (I have not even got home yet with mine,) you may get a better response from Interplay.
Call the Tech Support...or take it back to the store and exchange it for another one, explaining that yours is faulty...They'll take it back....good luck.

Sounds to me like you need to download the latest video drivers for your card. What kind of video card do you have?

Glycerine

Throntar 06-20-2001 02:12 PM

Do you have DirectX 7.0 or higher installed? Does your video card support DirectX? I would imagine so, since BG2 runs without a problem???

I'm not sure of the exact addy and I'm at work so I don't have time right now to look around on Microsoft's site. However, if you don't want to sift through the reams and reams of MS crap, I think that you can probably download DirectX 8.0a or 7.0 from http://www.download.com

Hope that helps! Don't hold me responsible if it doesn't help or makes it worse. I don't know for certain that DirectX is involved iwth text rendering. I'd still take Larry's advice and call their tech support...might be a quick fix.

Seph, I just ran into the same problem. I loaded in the game, proceeded from defeating Irenicus, and I get no text either, no text in the dialogue boxes, nothing in the game commands, nothing. Everything in BG2 is still there, I have the talks with irenicus, the queen, then once I hit BG2 TOB section in the grove, nothing.

So its not you my friend, its either the Add-on, or maybe something to do with all these patches and such we have downloaded to make BG2 actually work right!

THe first major snag in the game, right from the start. I sure hope the rest doesn't go this way LOL.

Throntar 06-20-2001 02:41 PM

Hey! You guys need to call tech support and get that bad-boy fixed. Please post the resolution here once you get it fixed. Thanks! http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/biggrin.gif

Does the same thing happen if you start a new game or if you import your "Final save" from BG2? I'm assuming that you're saying that you loaded up an earlier save, played through the fight with Irenicus again, and played right through into ToB, right? If so, do the other two ways I stated make a difference in the problem?

Well I loaded up the game from the final save slot, and just to make sure from my quicksave slot (which was at the end). The final save slot saves just before you fight Irenicus in Hell, so thats where I loaded from. I opened the doors again, beat him and his demons, I saw his end movie, I saw the shot with the queen thanking me,
then the screen loaded some more into, and I arrived in the grove where some stone heads are, I assume those are the magic heads or such I'm suppose to talk to. When I talked to it, no text. It had a few pages, you could hit continue at the bottom to progress the speach, but you couldn't see it. Then it teleported me to a open area where I fight the first Baalspawn girl, when she appeared she initiatated dialogue, but again, the speech box came up, but no speech in it.

None of the speech in BG2 regular is affected, I talked with Irenicus, the queen, and even started a new game and talked to Minsc and such, nothing wrong. SOoooooooooo not sure what to do now, waiting to hear from someone.
I am up to date on my drivers and such,

Pentium 533
192mb memory
full install, 10GB HD
16mb 3dfx voodoo 3 video card (configured right)
17 monitor
DirectX version 8

So not sure what it is, but we will find out.

trux 06-20-2001 03:51 PM

well, i just got my copy and have the same problem

What kind of video cards are you all using? I know one of you is using the Voodoo 3, but what about the others?

Also, are you running the game in hardware 3D or software? You might switch to whatever one you are not using and give it a try.

Well sent email to the support webpage, and i called once to try and get in touch with a technical guy, boy that was useless....

First its not a 1-800 number, so it costs you, and the menu is designed to really milk the money out of you, tons of useless babble before any options are given, plus you can't disrupt the dialogue to change menus, I was getting so pi**ed with that menu system. I've never seen one so bad, thats made to stretch out your phone call and milk the money.
So finally after a few minutes found the option I wanted, to talk to a support rep, but waited on the line for about 15 minutes with no help, listening to stinking music.
A waste of my time and money. Ill just flood the Web site support center with emails until they reply, its free that way and won't cost me a arm and a leg to talk to them.
I hope someone gets some closure with this, I haven't yet, and I've been trying to get an answer since 11 am.

trux 06-20-2001 04:13 PM

Sunder - you're right! i'm on the technical support line as we speak and they're not tryin' to help me...i really hope someone finds the solution to this soon or i'm going to explode. hopefully if we all email, call, etc. we can find a solution. godd*amn it i've been waiting for this for so long and now all i can do is sit here and look at the cd cover.

The Only thing I can think of is getting back your old "Dialogue.tlk" (I think thats what its called) file..However, that would only matter if you got the Text Fixes from Kevins site (Baldurdash)..If you did get it, the old file is backed up with a .old extension, so It shouldnt be to difficult to do.

Sorry I couldnt be more help! =(

sunder 06-20-2001 04:38 PM

Ok guys, a heads up on what i've found. Ive been over on the BLACK ISLE forum boards, and Kevin from Baldurdash is actually at that site with other forum users trying to help out.
So far, it seems that the problems alot of us are having (and tons of other people) might be related to Kevins Baldurdash patch fixes. His dialogue/description patch and his miscpatch.
Everyone out there who is getting dialogue problems, did you download patches from Baldurdash to fix some problems? maybe the english patch, or the weapons mastery patch, etc.
Kevin says that his patches were not designed to work with TOB, they were Baldur's gate 2 patches, he doesn't even have a copy of TOB to work off of, so chances are the patches, which were great for Baldur's gate 2, aren't so great for the dialogue in BG-TOB.
Now he suggests deleting your dialog.tlk file in your directory and renaming your old dialog.tlk.old file back to dialog.tlk. but I tried that and it didn't work, So i'm going to delete the entire directory, and reinstall BG2 and TOB without any of the patches and see if that fixes the problem.
Ill let you all know what I find out.

Throntar 06-20-2001 04:39 PM

SSJ, Trux, Sunder...

Have all of you installed any of the Baldurdash (Kevin Dorner's web site) fixes? Please confirm. If so, you might want to try backing them out of your override folder and restoring (as Therro pointed out) your old Dialogue.tlk file...

Thanks!

The guys on the Black Isle board are saying that it is a problem with Windows 2000. Win2k isn't officially supported and some of the guys did a clean install of SoA and ToB on both W2k and Win 98 SE and Win ME. Worked fine on 98/ME and dialogue bug came up on W2k. I'll let you know more as I get it...

SSJ4Sephiroth 06-21-2001 03:01 AM

well, it seems like a simple reinstall fixed it. had to reinstall bg2 and tob, so it took about 30 minutes, but i am kicking liberal butt now! so thats the solution, at least it was for me http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

My copy of TOB worked fine.
I didn't do any changes to the original bg2 (no patches etc)
Only changes made is the xcap removal and romance three timer http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...iles/smile.gif

My system config is at follow
Win 98 2nd edition
128MB
32MB TnT Nvidia
Direct X 8.0

Game's running perfect up to now.
Hope this info help you guys.

Shangoman 06-22-2001 11:12 PM

I have Baldurdash patches and win98 and suffering the same problem. So it is not a win2k problem. My guess is it is the patches. Damn I KNEW I should have backed up my overrides folder before screwing with it. Rule number one, backup before screwing with it. Rule number two, ALWAYS remember rule number one. Live and Learn.

P.S. it's amazing I knew ToB was out when everyone dissappeared for the BG II forum.

Shangoman 06-22-2001 11:38 PM

Hey if you use Kevin dialogue patch and you are having the above problem, change back to the original file, dialoque.tlk.old in your BG II folder and just reinstall ToB. It worked for me. I guess ToB modifies the file, obviously to get the new dialogue http://www.tgeweb.com/cgi-bin/ubb/no...es/FRblush.gif.

Memnoch 06-23-2001 01:05 AM

Guys, I just posted something about this.

From Mark Darrah at Bioware:

Note there are in fact 2 Dialog bugs:
1. X is busy. This is Win2K SP2 ONLY a fix is on the way for this. In the meanwhile the only way around it is to uninstall the Service Pack.
2. No text or incorrect text. This is caused by user created content. Here's a fix. Uninstall TOB. Delete Dialog.tlk. Reinstall TOB.

Uninstall SoA and ToB, find the BGII - SoA folder and delete anything left (BACK UP YOU SAVE GAMES!!!), reinstall, copy saves to the BGII - SoA folder, done. I had the same problem and that worked.
