In the banterpack interaction, Nalia tells Imoen that she is an archmage just like her. It got me thinking. What exactly is an archmage? Is there a precise definition, or is it just a term for "very powerful mage?"

shamrock_uk 04-27-2005 06:21 PM

Well, I've just read through the Elminster books and the term 'archmage' is used to describe the man himself and any number of mages of different races and good or evil.

I guess therefore it's just a word for a very powerful mage. I would also suggest that age and venerability are a criteria - I don't remember young mages being labelled as such, no matter their power.

Edit: I would not classify Imoen as an archmage myself, but then Nalia is a complete romantic when it comes to the 'adventuring' world which may be why she makes this mistake.

Its a prestige class, or just means pwnage at magic (consequently, pwnage at D&D).

Raistlin?

Just a term for a very powerful mage... USUALLY venerable ;)

In the older versions of pen & paper D&D "archmage" was the title a mage would receive upon reaching 18th level; in other words, able to cast 9th level spells.

In some areas a wizard become an archmage by defeating another archmage through magic. Others define it by mastery of dweomers or alike - e.g in ADOM an archmage can cast Wish at will.
I don't think a Fearūn wizard go to sleep as mage and wake up as archmage. It's a process and a title of the people. When a sufficient amount of people refer to you as archmage you have become an archmage. Much like the title hero.

ToB Imoen is lv20+ half-god mage, that would make her archmage for sure.

Illumina Drathiran'ar 04-28-2005 01:17 AM

Archmage? I had a stint as a contortionist sorceress prostitute in Waterdeep a few years back. Heard "Archmage!" a lot in those days, believe you me.

i would assume that an archmage would be the head mage for a perticular orginsation/branch/sector or whatever. daveron was an archmage, he was the top mage in the iron thrones mines in bg 1. but having said that it contradicts what nalia says, so im not sure, but thaqts what i have always assumed it to mean

Iron Greasel 04-28-2005 08:01 AM

I always just assumed that and archmage is a mage who is either older or more powerful than other mages. But mad=dogs explanation of being referred to as an archmage sounds better.

Interesting! Some good responses

And lol Illumina! A contortionist sorceress prositute, I love it!

And as for Imoen, you're probably right. I just find it hard to think of her as anything other than my little sister!

Who can cast Comet and Timestop. ;)

shamrock_uk 04-30-2005 09:24 AM

Well, maybe she surpasses my expectations once or twice then

Attalus 04-30-2005 03:23 PM

I was just going over her stats, and she's the one that got Draconis, with a spell-sequencer, IIRC. If you really want to see her surpass your expectations, try the Imoen Romance.

Hmm..well at the moment I'm running the Saerileth romance, haven't really got far in the game yet. Perhaps I might try the romance...can I ask a couple of questions though in return for some spoiler-free answers?

1) How does it rate in terms of depth with the other top-class ones out there?

2) Does it tackle the issue well when you find out she's your sister?

3) If I didn't have it installed through Chateau Irenicus did I miss anything important?

Thanks

You have to start it before the second floor of Chateau Irenicus or you won't accumulate enough "Kindness Points," earned in talking to Immie. Yeah, it's very deep, with many conversations, different for each area you travel to. She also talks about what happened to her in Irenicus' clutches. She hints many times that she has romantic feelings for the PC, but has doubts about the incest thing, and gets freaked out after the first time that she sleeps with you. After a while, when she gets her soul back from Bodhi, you and she go off and have a long conversation about that aspect, and if you can convince her that you are *really* not related, then the real Romance starts.

In the Drow society an archmage is the person whom looks after sorccere, the magic academy.he also sees to deals of inportance concerning the citys saftey.

timothy trotter 05-04-2005 01:31 AM

it seems that you would be the right person to answer this, judging by your name...
